Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance was a golden age in the long history of Venetian painting, and the art that came from Venice during that era includes some of the most visually exciting works in the whole of western art. This attractive book - a comprehensive account of painting in Venice from Bellini to Titian to Tintoretto - is an accessible introduction to the paintings of this period. Peter Humfrey surveys the development of a distinctly Venetian artistic tradition from the middle years of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. He discusses the work of Jacopo and Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto as well as the paintings of those less well known - such as the three Vivarini, Cima, Carpaccio, Palma Vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Bassano. Humfrey analyses these painters' works in terms of their pictorial style, technique, subject matter, patronage and function. He also sets the art against the background of the political, social and religious conditions of Renaissance Venice, as outlined in his Introduction. The book includes an appendix that provides brief biographies of thirty-six of the most important painters active in Renaissance Venice.

Book excerpt: Considered one of the three greatest painters of sixteenth-century Venice, along with Titian and Veronese, Tintoretto was a bold innovator. His free, expressive brushwork made his work look unfinished to contemporaries but is now recognized as a key step in the development of oil-on-canvas painting. Even today's audiences are astonished by the superhuman scale, painterly dynamism, and visionary qualities of his work. On the 500th anniversary of Tintoretto's birth, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of his career and achievement, with fifteen essays and reproductions of more than 140 paintings--many newly conserved--as well as a selection of his finest drawings. One special contribution is a focus on the artist's portraiture.--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venetian Painting in America the Fifteenth Century "Now that we are on the subject of Venetian Painting," that would be a more exact title for this book. For, in fact, I have made the stray pictures in our collections the pretext for saying what I wanted to say about their authors in general. In some ways this form suits me as it suited my master, Giovanni Morelli. Like him, I have a distaste for including in my own writing questions that do not vividly interest me at the moment, no matter how important in themselves; and like him, I prefer to avoid such systematic treatment as entails dealing with materials either at second hand, or out of dimmed and attenuated recollection. It goes against the grain to write about anything that does not fascinate and absorb me. For the last few years it has been the painters of Venice, and Giovanni Bellini in particular, that have preoccupied my leisure and occupied my working hours. I thought of making a book about him, and I may still do it. But should I fail to achieve this purpose the student will be able to gather from this book, supplemented by certain essays in my third series of "Study and Criticism of Italian Art," most of what I have to contribute to the subject. Book excerpt: For over a millennium, the Italian coastal state of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, or La Serenissima, flourished as a center for sea trade and the arts. Here an important final phase of late Baroque mythological and Biblical painting took place. Venice also became an important destination on the Grand Tour, where its aquatic setting and unique network of canals, palaces, and churches inspired a talented group of view painters, especially during the eighteenth century. Today, collections throughout North America hold many works from this prolific period. La Serenissima presents new scholarship on works that have not received due public attention in recent years and brings together approximately 65 works of art from more than 25 collections. Together, they represent important regional developments in religious and topographical painting as well as genre and portraiture. These artworks display the inimitable aspects of Venetian taste and culture in the age of the Grand Tour and through the decline of the Republic. La Serenissima also casts new light on the achievements of Venetian view painters, including master painter Antonio Canaletto, Bernardo Bellotto, Luca Carlevarijs, and Francesco Guardi.
