Book excerpt: "Many famous artworks of the Italian Renaissance were made to celebrate love, marriage, and family. They were the pinnacles of a tradition, dating from early in the era, of commemorating betrothals, marriages, and the birth of children by commissioning extraordinary objects - maiolica, glassware, jewels, textiles, paintings - that were often also exchanged as gifts. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of artworks arising from Renaissance rituals of love and marriage and makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. The impressive range of works gathered in these pages extends from birth trays painted in the early fifteenth century to large canvases on mythological themes that Titian painted in the mid-1500s. Each work of art would have been recognized by contemporary viewers for its prescribed function within the private, domestic domain."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the greatest sculptor of the Baroque period, and yet—surprisingly—there has never before been a major exhibition of his sculpture in North America. Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture showcases portrait sculptures from all phases of the artist’s long career, from the very early Antonio Coppola of 1612 to Clement X of about 1676, one of his last completed works. Bernini’s portrait busts were masterpieces of technical virtuosity; at the same time, they revealed a new interest in psychological depth. Bernini’s ability to capture the essential character of his subjects was unmatched and had a profound influence on other leading sculptors of his day, such as Alessandro Algardi, Giuliano Finelli, and Francesco Mochi. Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture is a groundbreaking study that features drawings and paintings by Bernini and his contemporaries. Together they demonstrate not only the range, skill, and acuity of these masters of Baroque portraiture but also the interrelationship of the arts in seventeenth-century Rome.

Book excerpt: Gender interventions and formal innovations in female portraiture, through works by Kahlo, Sherman, Neel, Dumas, Peyton and more This superbly conceived publication looks at nine women artists whose careers were devoted primarily to portraiture, analyzing both the work they produced and the unique ways in which each artist captured her subjects' likenesses and the spaces they inhabited. These artists represent the development of modernist art since 1870; each has made significant contributions to art history as they complicate long-held notions of the gaze and explore the relationship between the self, the subject and the artist. 9 Women Artistsexamines women painters and photographers who are known primarily for self-portraiture, such as Paula Modersohn-Becker, Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman; it also looks at female artists who depicted the daily lives of women and children in a creative environment that was largely disinterested in such subjects, such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Lotte Laserstein. Still other women--Alice Neel, Marlene Dumas and Elizabeth Peyton--embrace familiarity completely and depict friends and family as well as famous figures in their paintings. In essays by nine different authors, these artists and their subjects are considered individually and as part of a chronology of modern portraiture, with an emphasis on the dynamics of gender.

Book excerpt: Egon Schiele was a meteor that flashed across the galaxy of Viennese art at the beginning of the last century. Although he lived only twenty-eight years-dying quite suddenly of influenza in 1918 just as World War I came to an end-he left a stunning pictorial oeuvre. Schiele's obsession with sexuality, his own and that of others, made him at once a voyeur and a participant in that sexual imperative which Freud was simultaneously plumbing with such unsettling results. The disturbing revelations of Schiele's unmasking portraiture and of the new science of psychology disclosed a collective cultural anxiety during the last years of the crumbling Austrian empire. As a seer into the souls of his sitters, Schiele redefined portraiture in the age of Angst. Alessandra Comini is University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita at Southern Methodist University, where she taught for thirty-one years after having served on the faculty at Columbia University for ten years. She is the author of eight books, one of which, "Egon Schiele's Portraits," was nominated for the National Book Award. The Republic of Austria extended her its Grand Decoration of Honor in 1990. This is her third book on the artist; she has also published "Schiele in Prison," an extended essay and English translation of the 1912, makeshift diary Schiele kept during his twenty-four days in a provincial prison cell-a forgotten cell which she discovered and photographed in 1963. The cell is now part of a Schiele Museum in the village of Neulengbach. Her 2014 Megan Crespi mystery novel, "Killing for Klimt," is followed by "The Schiele Slaughters."

Book excerpt: Contemporary artists revisit Warhol's 1985 love letter to America Originally published in 1985, Warhol's Americafeatures photographs both taken and collected by the artist during his cross-country travels and in-person encounters over the previous decade. The book, an idiosyncratic love letter to America, finds Warhol reflecting on everything from travel, beauty and fame to politics, technology and the American Dream. Three decades later, Fantasy Americainvites artists Nona Faustine, Kambui Olujimi, Pacifico Silano, Naama Tsabar and Chloe Wise to revisit this seminal publication and contribute their own art. All New York-based, they, like Warhol, are cross-disciplinary artists drawn to repetition, seriality and image appropriation in their work. Against the backdrop of nationwide protests in the wake of George Floyd's murder, the Black Lives Matter movement, the COVID-19 pandemic and the presidential election, these essays and artworks probe and challenge our perceptions of what America is and what it can become.

Book excerpt: Ever since it’s existence, perhaps more than happiness, unhappiness, limits and depression have forced artists to produce, and it is seen that artworks which arise primarily as a result of the need to self-heal, bring society together against common and binding challenges. This coronavirus outbreak, which has affected the whole world, is one of the hard times humankind is going through. In this period we have been living since March, art offers the most valuable contribution to the sustainability of life with its features that reconcile emotional conflicts, increase awareness, enable the development of social skills, manage behaviors, guide reality and contribute to solving problems. As the people of the world, in this period when we question our relationship with each other, nature and animals, when we are unsure about the future, and when we reconsider our perceptions and priorities, artworks are the only tools that have the power to cope with the coronavirus under its conditions. Because like the virus itself, artworks are capable of passing all boundaries, and they can influence all people, even if they’re under different flags, speaking different languages. This influence will bring back the awareness, the hope, the knowledge that we’re not alone, the compromise, the sustainability of life and its colors. Goethe’s “One cannot escape from the world with greater certainty than through art, and one cannot relate to it with greater certainty than through art.” aphorism reveals a truth that enlightens our present from centuries ago. I thanks so much to all my artist friends who have contributed to the "International ARTVITAL Interdisciplinary Mixed Exhibition" that we hold with these thoughts online within the ISLC2020 International Conference on Sustainable Living. Also I would like to thank my dear friends who took part in the organizing board and made the exhibition happen and Rating Academy, which always appreciates the aspect of science and art that develops and enriches each other.

Book excerpt: The exhibition presents the work of Russian artists of different ages and experience, displayed in various painting techniques and genres, united by one idea to capture the spiritual world of a person and its manifestation in life and culture. The idea of such an exhibition was born a long time ago, and now it has formed into a concept to present the work of both already formed artistic personalities with their own unique vision of the world, who have developed their own manner and painting techniques, and novice, young artists with a direct, open look at the world, untrained visual approaches reflecting their idea of people, their deeds, experiences, exploits, an independent vision of the reality being changed by a person and cultural transformation of space. Artists pay close attention to the transience of the flow of human life, the cyclical nature of natural phenomena, the passion of human nature, the strength of spirit, the height of spirituality, the depth of poetry, historical exploits, cultural traditions and embody in the images of their works.
