Book excerpt: Breath Analysis presents state-of-the-art research in this specialized field, also offering guidance on how best to design the technology and conduct analysis. The book primarily focuses on the diagnosis of lung cancer, asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. The reliability, consistency and utility of the results from breath analysis depends on exhaled breath sampling procedures and tools, gas sensor array technology (sensing material and transducer), and finally, medical pertinence and interpretation. The book gives step-by-step procedures and discusses best practice solutions for problems in sample collection, sensor technology, clinical assessment, medical interpretation and data analysis. The book's primary audience would include biomedical engineers and medical doctors, but it is also useful for hospital technicians, hospital and biomedical SME leading figures, and those in PhD level Engineering and Medicine. Presents an overview of existing breath analysis technology, along with their pros and cons Provides a tool for mapping, bridging and translating different approaches and available devices Covers best practices and procedures for exhaled breath collection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volatile organic compounds (VOC) analysis, thanks to marked recent technical advances, is emerging as one of the most promising tools for the development of innovative research and clinical methodologies. The general premise to this proposal is that in states of altered metabolism, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), important changes may occur in patterns of exhaled VOCs, reflecting endogenous changes at the tissue and cellular levels. In this dissertation project, we performed complex in vivo metabolic clamping experiments on both healthy and diabetic subjects, during which we collected matched breath, room air, and blood samples. Concentrations of ~100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were then identified and quantified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Corresponding plasma glucose was measured by a high-precision glucometer; insulin and lipid concentrations were measured by ELISA. We then developed predictive algorithms allowing the non-invasive, breath-based measurement of key metabolic variables (plasma glucose and lipids) using multilinear regression analysis. Furthermore, we developed several metrics to assess the stability of VOCs and predictive algorithms across various metabolic perturbations over time. The general rationale for these studies is that current methodologies used to measure critical metabolic variables (plasma glucose, insulin, cholesterol panel) require invasive blood draws, are expensive, and can be painful. The broader, downstream goal of the project is to translate this technology into practical clinical devices that will simplify monitoring of these blood variables. Such alternative, non-invasive testing strategies will likely greatly improve prevention, diagnosis and everyday management of diabetes mellitus and other related conditions (e.g. obesity, cardiovascular disease).

Book excerpt: This book describes how the analysis of the trace gases in exhaled breath can be used for non-invasive clinical diagnosis of disease and for monitoring the effectiveness of therapy. This approach offers an important addition to the diagnostic techniques available to medicine, having the advantage that on-line breath analysis can provide information to the clinician immediately and thus facilitate rapid diagnosis and treatment. The book is a compilation of contributions to a conference held in Dornbirn, Austria, 23-26 September 2004 on various aspects of this new topic. Written by the foremost workers in the field, it will provide clinicians and others in the medical fraternity with an up-to-date summary of the status of the subject. The wide scope of the chapters ranges from descriptions of the analytical methods that are available, through the use of breath analysis in the study of physiological phenomena, to the identification of biomarkers of particular injury and disease. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book excerpt: The present book focuses on the capabilities of laser photoacoustic spectroscopy method in high impact and new frontier of modern applications: medical diagnosis based on exhaled breath analysis with special importance on the theory, application of the simultaneous measurements of ethylene and ammonia absorptions and the study of exhaled respiration of subjects with renal failure together with breath test analysis of one prevention domain: smoking. This book consists of 4 chapters plus appendices, the first two chapters are focussed on general introduction to human breath biomarkers and the instrumental aspects of the techniques which makes it useful to readers whose main interest is photoacoustic spectroscopy and particularly breath air analysis. The technique developed in this book ensuring the advantages of health state assessment by monitoring the evolution of gaseous biomarkers in human body, impossible to achieve with current techniques. The book also, represents a potentially interesting to researchers and specialists with the application of biomedical optics domain and particularly life sciences area.

Book excerpt: We have studied the feasibility of using biomarkers in exhaled breath as a prodromal diagnostic for bioagent infection. A compact sampling system was developed and used to collect more than 75 breath samples from 9 piglets. Three of the sampled piglets were uninfected control animals, three were infected with staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), and three with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A.p.). We found that: volatile markers appeared several hours before outwardly noticeable physical symptoms of illness; volatile profiles for infected piglets were distinct from the uninfected animals and room background air samples; and the volatile profiles for SEB and A.p. were different.
