Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training and Treatment of the Horse In connection with the above subject I would like to call the attention of the reader to one more fact, which is well known to all who handle hors es, and that is that the herse, especially in the summer time, is constantly afflicted with a sore back caused by the galling of the saddle.' When the sore is discovered the owner's first step is to apply some remedy to heal the sore, but he pays no attention whatever to the cause of the sore. The cause is usually found in the driver. When he stops the horse he jumps onto the shafts on one side or the other and then to the ground. When he gets ready to start again he jumps onto the shafts and then to his seat. The average weight of the driver is from one hundred twenty five-to one hundred sixty pounds. Is it to be won dered at that when this weight is thrown on the shafts on one side or the other, w1th the ordinary harness as it is usually used, that the horse's back can be anything else but sore? The part of the back covered by the saddle is usually very tender, = caused by constant perspiration in the summer time and no opportunity given to dry out by reason of the air. Being excluded by the saddle; Now, this tender part receives the worst treat_5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Saddle-Horse: A Complete Guide for Riding and Training The young horse soon becomes tractable, and, as long as his temper is unruffied, he desires to do that which is required of him. Until the spirit of rebellion is awak ened, he is as anxious to avoid the perils of battle as his master should be. If, upon an occasion, he declines to perform some movement that is required of him, let his attention he turned to that which will please him, and his obedience in this will induce his obedience afterwards to the first demand. To give up to him after a battle will confirm his obstinacy, but he will soon forget his unnoticed defiance. Under proper treatment he will in time yield to the will of his master, without dreaming of resistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse Training by Modern Methods The object of this book is to arrange in the most convenient, clear, and concise form the modern system of horse-training, in so far as it is applicable to the train ing of horses in the mounted service of the United States. No attempt has been made in any case to improve upon methods already deemed correct by the best horse men; and as such methods can be found dealing with all points of training, it follows that the subject matter in this book is not original. Where the best was to be found, there it has been sought, and where the authors of previous works have expressed their ideas in language considered the most concise and clear, their words have been copied verbatim, with due acknowledgement to the authors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training and Breaking of Horses While the book is written from a practical point of view, the writer has in mind filling a need met in the classroom, where, owing to lack of time, it is not possible to consider details sufficiently to enable the student to take up the practical work of training horses To facilitate this part of the work, and to avoid repeti tion, free use is made of cross references. Recognizing the incompleteness of such a work, the writer will be glad to correspond with those into whose hands this book may fall concerning difficulties in the training of horses, and also to receive suggestions that will aid in perfecting the horse's education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of School Training for Horses I think it fit that I should offer some explanation for advocating the school system of training, since it is generally regarded as something fanciful and useless, if not positively mischievous. I shall first say a few words con cerning the importance of a thorough method in the training of horses for the saddle, and I shall then answer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Breaking and Training Horses The Author has been tempted to write this work because he has often experienced the want of a small yet practical guide dealing with the subject, reliable information being chiefly contained in more expensive manuals. Of course, each Horse-breaker naturally advocates some particular system - which he chooses to call his own - and it is just this egotism that destroys the value of his information, no matter how successfully he may have applied it. In a book of this class it is essential that theory be ready to shake hands with practice, because without this case of demonstration a book on Horsebreaking becomes merely a delusion. The Author leaves himself in the readers' hands to judge whether he has fulfilled his object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It concentrates on the relationship between man and horse, and explores the ways we interact with the animals, giving advice for training, management, care and maintenance, and much more. A fascinating and practical text, this book is highly recommended for modern horse owners and is not to be missed by collectors of vintage equestrian literature. Contents include: "The Power of Reason over Instinct", "Incident of an Officer's Horse", "The Circus Performing Horse", "Another Test of Reason", "Intelligence of the Horse", "Kindness versus Cruelty", "The basis of Management", "Variations of Temperament in Men and Horses", "Sympathy between Horse and Man", etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on maintaining and caring for horses.
