Book Synopsis First Year Harmony by : William Lovelock
Download or read book First Year Harmony written by William Lovelock and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the FOREWORD. In writing this book my aim has been not only to show the student how to manage and use the various possibilities, but also when to introduce them - a point which is obviously of prime importance. One so often encounters students who can talk glibly about the "treatment" of all kinds of chords, but who seem not to have the slightest idea of when to use them, or how to know when their use is implied in a given part. While the harmonisation of a melody or a bass is to a great extent dependent on the musical sensibility of the student, it has to be realised that certain melodic progressions imply, normally, certain definite harmonies, and these implications I have tried to make clear. Elementary work, at least, is largely compounded of commonplaces, and my object has been as far as possible to show how the underlying commonplace may be "spotted." An appendix on Figured Bass, for the benefit of those who use it in teaching, is published separately. It provides instruction and exercises on each chapter. The chapters and material have been arranged not only to provide a good grounding, but also to cover what is generally needed in the more elementary Harmony examinations, such as the paper work of the A.T.C.L., A.R.C.M., and L.R.A.M., and the whole book is based on my own practical experience in the teaching of Harmony. An attempt has also been made to show how exercises can be made reasonably interesting and flowing, by the early introduction of the unessential, and in particular Suspensions, which are often left to a later stage on account of their supposed difficulty. Actually they are easy enough to manage if dealt with on the lines indicated. The treatment of certain matters has been deliberately restricted and limited for the sake of clarity and simplicity; Modulation, for example, has been dealt with only in an elementary manner. The student is recommended to follow this book by my "Hints for Paper Work Candidates" (Hammond & Co. which will serve for general revision. Ample supplementary exercises are to be found in my "108 Exercises in Harmonisation," -W. Lovelock.

Book Synopsis Exercises in Harmony and Composition by : Frederick Corder
Download or read book Exercises in Harmony and Composition written by Frederick Corder and published by . This book was released on 1891 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These exercises are intended to supply a want which I have continually felt during my practice as a teacher. The only work at all covering the same ground is one by Hiller, the exercises in which are too difficult for average students. The plan of the present work is simple. First, I have given a collection of Chorales to be harmonized [...] Next comes a large assortment of Tunes, principally Folk-songs of many nations, to be harmonised in various manners. [...] His next step will be one in actual composition. A number of melodic phrases or half sentences are given, and he must invent a suitable continuation [...] Finally, I have given some Basses, figured and unfigured, on which to build harmony and melody. [...] Naturally the earlier exercises will be the most useful, and I have therefore given a proportionately larger number of these."--Preface.

Book excerpt: This book provides the advanced pianist with a modern alternative, or addition to the standard repertoire of exercise books we all know - Hanon, Czerny, Pischna, Brahms. While those are all excellent, much has happened in music since they were written. Material is included to give pianists of any genre (be they Classical, Jazz, Pop, Country, R&B, or anything else) technical and mental exercises that draw from modern harmony and rhythm, while taxing the hands in ways we all need. The Introduction page is included in eight languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian, so that most pianists interested in the book will be able to read and understand the overall concepts in the book. All other text in in English. The six sections of the book are Scalar, Contrary Motion, Movable Shapes, Chordal, Diminished Scale, and Jazzy. Exercises are included in each section to give the hands, and the mind challenges that are not found in other books, and reflect both the kinds of things pianists are expected to be able to play today, and the way they might see them notated on the page.Time signatures are expanded from the standard 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 found in most exercise books to include:7/8, 5/4, 9/8, 6/8, 12/8, 1/4, 7/16, 15/16 and 10/8. "Mixed" meters are also included where exercises change time signatures within the exercise.
