Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruited to be a lecturer on a group tour of Indonesia, Edward M. Bruner decided to make the tourists aware of tourism itself. He photographed tourists photographing Indonesians, asking the group how they felt having their pictures taken without their permission. After a dance performance, Bruner explained to the group that the exhibition was not traditional, but instead had been set up specifically for tourists. His efforts to induce reflexivity led to conflict with the tour company, which wanted the displays to be viewed as replicas of culture and to remain unexamined. Although Bruner was eventually fired, the experience became part of a sustained exploration of tourist performances, narratives, and practices. Synthesizing more than twenty years of research in cultural tourism, Culture on Tour analyzes a remarkable variety of tourist productions, ranging from safari excursions in Kenya and dance dramas in Bali to an Abraham Lincoln heritage site in Illinois. Bruner examines each site in all its particularity, taking account of global and local factors, as well as the multiple perspectives of the various actors—the tourists, the producers, the locals, and even the anthropologist himself. The collection will be essential to those in the field as well as to readers interested in globalization and travel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do Paddington Bear, Rupert Bear, and Winnie the Pooh have in common, besides their ursine roots? They lived in real places, as well as in the imaginations of countless generations. Those places still exist. And inveterate globetrotter Mark West has been to them all. Children's Literature Tour of Great Britain provides detailed information on 49 important sites with a strong connection to children's literature. Each chapter begins with background information about the author (or, in the cases of King Arthur and Robin Hood, the character), in particular his or her writings for children. West offers tantalizing tidbits about birthplaces, memorials, landscapes, and gift shops, and concludes with complete visitor information for would-be literary pilgrims. Photographs, most of which were taken by West, should satisfy even the most demanding armchair traveler. Many of the sites on West's Tour are geared to children. Some are clearly intended for adults. All will add depth and delight to your next excursion into the fantastic (and fascinating) world of British children's literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Excursions of a Book Lover: Being Papers on Literary Themes This book is precisely what its name indicates. The papers of which it is composed represent the many pleasant evenings which a Book-lover has passed in delightful association with what an English poet has called "the sweet consolers of the mind." There is no plan or special purpose in the arrangement. The Excursionist's migrations were not, all of them, "from the blue bed to the brown." He visited the libraries of his friends where he found not only the goodly fellowship of many rare volumes, hut the companionship of kindred souls, and the joy of a fragrant cigar. The gladness of many evenings is in these pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Beyond Belief is a book about one of the more important and unsettling issues of our time: the effects of the Islamic conversion of Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, and Malaysia. It is not a book of opinion. It is - in the Naipaul way - a very rich and human book, full of people and stories. Islam is an Arab religion, and it makes imperial Arabizing demands on its converts. In this way it is more than a private faith, and it can become a neurosis. What has this Arab Islam done to the histories of these converted countries? How do the converted peoples, non-Arabs, view their past - and their future? In a follow-up to Among the Believers, his classic account of his travels through these countries, V. S. Naipaul returns after seventeen years to find out how and what the converted preach. In Indonesia he finds a pastoral people who have lost their history through a confluence of Islam and technology. In Iran he discovers a religious tyranny as oppressive as the secular one of the Shah, and he meets people weary of the religious rules that govern every aspect of their lives. Pakistan - in a tragic realization of a Muslim re-creation fantasy - inherited blood feuds, rotting palaces, antique cruelty; then President Zia installed religious terror with $100 million of Saudi money. In Malaysia, the Muslim Youth organization is alive and growing, and the people are mentally, physically, and geographically torn between two worlds, struggling to live the impossible dream of a true faith born out of a spiritual vacancy. A startling and revelatory addition to the Naipaul canon, Beyond Belief confirms the author's reputation as a masterly observer, a "finder-out" of stories, as well as a magnificent teller of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase literature and environment only achieved popularity in recent decades, yet writers dating back to the explorers of the 1500s—and later such 19th-century Romanticists as Thoreau—have long been addressing environmental issues through literary expression. This volume introduces students and educators to the field by tracing the evolution of environmental writing in the United States. Chapters written by distinguished scholars offer new perspectives on important environmental issues, guiding readers through 11 carefully selected literary works. Each chapter provides brief biographical information on the author, discussions of the work's structural, thematic, and stylistic components, and insights into the historical context that relates the work to relevant environmental issues. Each chapter concludes with information on works cited. The analyzed works cover a wide spectrum of literature and span nearly 100 years. Included are early writings, such as Mary Austin's 1903 The Land of Little Rain, and famous groundbreaking works, such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) and Gary Snyder's Turtle Island (1974). Also included are frequently assigned works of special interest to students, such as The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975), The Earthsea Trilogy (1977), and Ceremony (1977). A list of selected further suggested readings completes the volume. Students of literature, as well as educators looking for new ways to present social issues, will find many ideas and much inspiration in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times–bestselling author of Carnivores of Light and Darkness comes the second fantasy adventure in the Journeys of the Catechist saga. With his two companions—Simna ibn Sind the swordsman and the massive black cat Ahlitah—at his side, Etjole Ehomba continues his honor-driven quest to find the Visioness of Laconda. Imprisoned in the fortress of an evil necromancer, she is both her captor’s obsession and his torment. Seeking to cross the blighted Semordria Ocean, Etjole and his sidekicks find no one willing to risk its legendary monsters—until they meet a collector of rare animals. He points them to the northern realm of Hamacassar, and then drugs them in order to steal Ahlitah. Escaping the man’s conjured assassins, the trio head to the Thinking Kingdoms, across snow-covered mountains to Laconda, with danger and dark magic nipping at their heels . . . “Foster’s latest series combines elements of epic fantasy with folkloric motifs in an engaging picaresque tale of a simple man’s honor-bound journey into adventure.” —Library Journal “The story’s swift pace and Foster’s boundless imagination deliver something very different from the usual fantasy quest saga. In these magical lands, Foster shows that character and common sense can be as important, and as powerful, as any magic.” —Publishers Weekly “There’s no doubt that Alan Dean Foster is a master storyteller. I finished Into the Thinking Kingdoms in a single sitting.” —Black Gate “Splendidly packed with illustrious incidents, not to mention a protagonist who grows steadily more intriguing and enigmatic.” —Kirkus Reviews
