The classic observations of recent years can now be interpreted with the powerful new techniques of molecular biology. Consequently there is much new material throughout the book, including many new illustrations and extensive references to recent work. Its essential philosophy remains the same, though: fundamental concepts are clearly explained, and key experiments are examined in some detail. This textbook will be used by students of physiology, neuroscience, cell biology and biophysics. Specializing undergraduates and graduates as well as lecturers and researchers will find the text thorough and clearly written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium Entry Channels in Non-Excitable Cells focuses on methods of investigating the structure and function of non-voltage gated calcium channels. Each chapter presents important discoveries in calcium entry pathways, specifically dealing with the molecular identification of store-operated calcium channels which were reviewed by earlier volumes in the Methods in Signal Transduction series. Crystallographic and pharmacological approaches to the study of calcium channels of epithelial cells are also discussed. Calcium ion is a messenger in most cell types. Whereas voltage gated calcium channels have been studied extensively, the non-voltage gated calcium entry channel genes have only been identified relatively recently. The book will fill this important niche.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume presents a novel computational framework for understanding how collections of excitable cells work. The key approach in the text is to model excitable tissue by representing the individual cells constituting the tissue. This is in stark contrast to the common approach where homogenization is used to develop models where the cells are not explicitly present. The approach allows for very detailed analysis of small collections of excitable cells, but computational challenges limit the applicability in the presence of large collections of cells.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of up-to-date research reviews dealing with various aspects of the structure and function of excitable cells. Its overall objective is to further the search for a better understanding of the mechanism of excitation on a structural and physicochemical basis. The chapters are written by active investigators from a variety of disciplines, repre senting many different points of view. Their complementary fields of expertise give this book the rare feature of extraordinary breadth. Excitability is a fundamental property of many biological systems. The mechanisms by which nerve impulses are initiated and propagated, and by which rhythmical activities are produced in nerve, muscle, and cardiac cells, can be fully elucidated only when the process of excitation is derived from fundamental principles applied to known structural forms, at both the macroscopic and the molecular level. The problems of excitation are complex, requiring knowledge of many aspects of cells, including their morphology, elec trobiology, chemical physics, and biochemistry.

Book excerpt: Monographs in Modern Biology for Upper School and University Courses: Excitable Cells focuses on the fundamental nature of the signals carried in the nervous system, including nervous activity, synapses, and membrane permeability. The publication first elaborates on the elements of structure and function in the nervous system and resting nerve. Discussions focus on neuron, synapse, effect of changes in membrane permeability on membrane potential, recording nervous activity, movement of ions through solutions and membranes, and permeability of the resting membrane. The text then takes a look at the nerve impulse, including permeability changes associated with the nerve impulse, voltage clamp studies, and electrical model of the nerve membrane. The manuscript examines input signal and synapse. Topics include receptor discharge, generator potential, coding of the input message, frog neuromuscular junction, functional aspects of the vertebrate neuromuscular junction, nervous control of crustacean muscle, and central synapses. The publication is a dependable source material for biologists and readers interested in pursuing studies on excitable cells.

Book excerpt: The tissue culture approach to the study of membrane properties of excitable cells has progressed beyond the technical problems of culture methodology. Recent developments have fostered substantive contributions in research con cerned with the physiology, pharmacology, and biophysics of cell membranes in tissue culture. The scope of this volume is related to the application of tissue culture methodology to developmental processes and cellular mechanisms of electrical and chemical excitability. The major emphasis will be on the body of new biological information made available by the analytic possibilities inherent in the tissue culture systems. Naturally occurring preparations of excitable cells are frequently of suf ficient morphological complexity to compromise the analysis of the data obtained from them. Some of the limitations associated with dissected prepa rations have to do with the direct visualization of and access to the cell(s) in question and maintenance of steady-state conditions for prolonged periods of time. Since preparations in tissue culture can circumvent these problems, it is feasible to analyze the properties of identifiable cells, grown either singly or in prescribed geometries, as well as to follow the development of cellular inter actions. A crucial consideration in the use of cultured preparations is that they must faithfully capture the phenomenon of interest to the investigator. This and other potential limitations on the methodology are of necessary concern in the present volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Molecular Properties and Evolution of Excitable Cells describes the theoretical aspects in which excitable cells, such as nerves, muscles, and sense organs, operate. This book develops a hypothesis regarding the evolution and characteristics of excitable cells. This monograph focuses on the properties of the bounding membrane and its complex permeability system, which starts the excitation state. Sense organs, as the input component in both vertebrates and invertebrates, are then discussed. The text then briefly describes the ways that the ionic permeability of the excitable membrane can both be modified and controlled. The book points out that since ions pass through standard sizes of the pores in an excitable membrane, their passage is determined by the dimensions of the pore and by the existing charge found on its walls. The book then explains the application of a mechanical stimulus to a mechanoreceptor that will cause deformations in the membrane. This deformation leads to enzyme activity and produces alteration in the rate at which ATP is supplied to the lateral borders of the cell. The text discusses a hypothesis that invokes enzyme activity by propagating action potential along the axon, and other input systems, such as adrenaline, amino acids, and y-amino-butyric acid (GABA). The book also explains the hypothesis that living organisms are composed of an ordered system of protein-enzymes forming on phospholipid-protein membranes. This monograph will benefit microbiologists, biotechnologists, and academicians connected with the biological sciences.
