Book excerpt: Social-cognitive research suggests that people possess numerous self-schemas that are contextually based; however, many measures of self-schemas continue to assess self- knowledge as a unitary cognitive structure. Therefore, one could argue that existing measures of self-schemas lack construct validity. The current study explored the convergent and incremental validity of a new self-schema measure, the Relational Self-Schema Measure (RSSM), which was designed to be more in line with recent conceptualizations and evidence regarding the structure and content of these self-knowledge representations. To examine the validity of the RSSM, the current study explored how the RSSM related to people’s appraisals, affect, and coping with past stressful situations. The RSSM was compared to a commonly used self-schema measure, the Young Schema Questionnaire- Short Form (YSQ-SF; Schmidt, Joiner, Young, & Telch, 1995), a well-established trait-based personality measure, the Big Five Inventory (BFI; John, Donahue, & Kentle, 1991), and a measure of interpersonal rejection sensitivity, the Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ; Downey & Feldman, 1996). In an initial on-line session, 146 participants completed the RSSM, YSQ-SF, BFI, and RSQ measures. In a subsequent session, participants were primed with both positive and negative self-schemas and then completed measures of appraisals, affect, and coping in response to a stressful event related to each schema. In short, the RSSM exhibited good convergent validity with related schema and personality measures. Furthermore, although findings were mixed, there was some evidence supporting the incremental validity of the RSSM in accounting for appraisals, affect, and coping for past stressful events. The implications and conclusions of the findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: Beliefs about the self, or self-schemata, are instrumental constructs in various psychological research areas, including personality, psychopathology, and clinical treatment. Currently practiced methods of measuring self-schemata have fallen behind modern conceptualizations of self-schemata as both multiple and relational to context. This study examined the psychometric properties and potential clinical applications of a new measure designed to assess self-schemata in a manner consistent with current schema definitions called the Relational Self-Schema Measure (RSSM). A longitudinal design was implemented, with 134 respondents at time one and 78 respondents at time two approximately eight weeks later. The sample was composed of predominantly female college freshman between the ages of 18-19, and they completed the RSSM and measures of positive and negative psychological outcomes (distress, affect, well-being, stress, etc.) at both time points. The results of the study for the RSSM demonstrated good test-retest-reliability, convergent and discriminant validity with positive and negative psychological outcomes, but mixed-to-poor evidence of RSSM ability to predict changes in psychological outcomes across time points. These findings indicate support for good psychometric properties of the RSSM, as well as support the measure’s construct validity. However, due to many nonsignificant findings and multiple methodological concerns, further investigation is required into the RSSM’s predictive and ecological validity.

However, one important conceptualization of these expectations, the relational schema, has been understudied, largely due to the lack of a clear, cohesive measure of schema content. The current study describes the development of a new measure of relational schemas, the Relational Schema Questionnaire (RSQ) which separately considers the self, partner, and relationship components of the schema and can also be used to assess relationships at varying levels of specificity. Four studies explored the nature of such a measure, first by investigating whether the script component of relational schemas is unique from trait descriptors of the relationship. Study 2 generated lists of common expectations about the self, partner, and relationship for a variety of different relationships which were used to form the RSQ. Study 3 explored the factor structure of the RSQ, and finally Study 4 explored the structure and construct validity of the measure. Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical importance, and future research directions using the RSQ will be suggested.

Book excerpt: Is the tendency to include close relationships in individuals' sense of self associated with emotional well being or the quality of interpersonal relationships? Considerable research shows that self-construal mediates and regulates psychological well being and social functioning. However, most research has assumed an individual self-construal. The present research examined the implications of a relational self-construal for emotional and social well being. Also, I compared relational self-construal to the broader construct of communion. The Relational Interdependent Self-Construal scale (Cross, Bacon, & Morris, 2000) measured individual differences in relational self-construal. In the first study, 194 university students completed measures of self-esteem, self-discrepancy, emotions, well being, including close others in the self, relationship quality, empathy, aggression, and humour. Individuals with a more relational self-construal evidenced higher levels of positive emotions, including close others in the self, positive relationship quality, empathy, and affiliative humour, compared to those with lower levels of relational self-construal. Also, in individuals higher in relational self-construal, higher levels of empathy were associated with more positive emotions and less frequent negative emotions. Contrary to predictions, relational self-construal was related to lower levels of negative emotions and relational aggression. Communion and relational self-construal demonstrated several similar associations; however, relational self-construal explained unique variance in positive emotions, including close others in the self, positive relationship quality, empathy, and affiliative humour. In the second study, 242 university students logged daily emotional and social experiences for three weeks. Relational self-construal was positively related to daily frequency of positive events with close others, empathy given to and received from close others, and mutuality of empathy; however, relational self-construal was unrelated to negative events or number of close others. Relational self-construal moderated the link between daily events with close others and satisfaction with life. Compared to communion, relational self-construal accounted for unique variance in positive events with close others, the association between daily positive events and satisfaction with life, and levels of empathy. The present research demonstrated the usefulness of relational self-construal in explaining individual differences in the quality of close relationships, the nature of empathy with close others, and the emotional significance of close relationships.

This Research Topic welcomed all types of articles, with the exception of case reports. We were particularly interested in: 1.
