Book excerpt: Community colleges have developed into vital resources for affordable, easy access, high quality education. Community college instructors with previous leader experience possess the credentials needed to teach their curricula and to lead learning experiences in the classroom. Researchers have found that instructors who display transformational leadership qualities can influence student actions, awareness, and learning outcomes. This study was conducted to explore community college faculty who possess transformational leadership qualities in relation to student extra effort, student perception of instructor effectiveness, and overall satisfaction with the instructor. The conceptual framework is the full range leadership theory which is one of the most broadly used comprehensive leadership theories. The measurement tool used was Avolio and Bass's (2004) Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), which measures nine factors of leadership skills through a quantitative survey. These findings present support for the recognition of the value of transformational leadership in the community college environment. Consistent with the findings of this study, transformational leadership has been viewed as the most revered leadership model in the full range leadership theory. Instructors have the ability to integrate critical components of transformational leadership behaviors to impact the student experience in the classroom, resulting in higher levels of student outcomes of extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction. The findings add to the body of literature and provide insight into the leadership skills of community college instructors from previous business experience.

Book excerpt: Community colleges have become increasingly reliant on adjunct faculty members to deliver content to their students. The impact adjunct faculty members have on the success of community college students is profound. Researchers found students taught by part-time faculty had less favorable outcomes in terms of persistence, completion, and transfer. Improvement of working conditions for community college adjunct faculty is imperative, as student success may be contingent on these improvements. Researchers have found job satisfaction to be related to performance, effectiveness, and other outcomes. Presumably, adjunct faculty members who are more satisfied with their jobs will have higher performance outcomes. Thus, understanding the level of job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles thereof can have a lasting impact on the success of students. There is a gap in the literature on job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles on job satisfaction of community adjunct faculty. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style employed by the academic team leader and the job satisfaction of community college adjunct faculty members.

Book excerpt: This book is a must read for administration and human resources staff of colleges and universities who may be having difficulty with retaining highly qualified teaching instructors, academic professors, and adjunct faculty staff. The retention of faculty and staff of educational institutions has been of vital concern over the last decade, especially since the economic turmoil of 2008 and the aftermath of the great recession. The increase of online degrees has increased the competitiveness of finding, and keeping, qualified and valuable teaching staff. Retention of valuable teaching instructors ñ including adjunct, part-time, associate, and assistant professors is crucial in the survival and growth of academic institutions, as well as maintenance of accreditation credentialing and standards. This book focuses on a correlational research study, based on a faculty population in an institution of higher learning in Florida, that examined the relationship between perceived academic administrator leadership styles and the satisfaction of faculty members and transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership styles of academic administrators, with a dependent variable of job satisfaction for full-time faculty members. Based on a 95% significance level, the researcher identified a significant relationship between the three leadership styles and the academic instructor's job satisfaction, thus an inferred correlational relationship to staff retention. Using this model, academic leaders are encouraged to refine their leadership styles on the basis of faculty members' indicated preferences to increase and improve academic instructor's retention, as well as their satisfaction in working for the school. Three key recommendations for action were developed. First, senior academic administrators should identify current transformational leaders in their organizations and perhaps use them as mentors to assist in the training and mentorship of current and future leaders. Second, academic administrators should recognize that leadership traits can be learned, and therefore, provide professional development and training opportunities in the areas of transformational leadership for present and future academic leaders. Finally, those who seek leadership positions in academia should become aware of the attributes of an effective higher education administrator, and work to develop an intrinsic understanding of and cultivate a skill-set of transformational leadership characteristics. Book excerpt: This research examined the relationship between perceived presidential leadership styles and faculty job satisfaction in Illinois Community Colleges. Based on previous research studies in leadership and job satisfaction, two widely accepted and validated survey questionnaires were selected as main instruments for the study. An additional four demographic questions were added in the areas of tenure status, gender, length of service at the institution and level of degree attained to stratify the sample results. The Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) was used to measure presidential leadership styles as perceived by the faculty. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) was used to measure faculty job satisfaction. The LBDQ and MSQ questionnaires, and demographic questions were uploaded into Survey Monkey and the link was sent to participants. Data on presidential leadership style and faculty job satisfaction were collected from a sample of 62 full time faculty members from 5 Illinois Community Colleges. The rate of survey return was 15%. Statistical analyses, including ANOVAs, t-tests and Pearson Correlations were performed and descriptive statistics were ran to answer the study's research questions. ANOVAs were conducted to determine whether differences and/or interactions existed in faculty job satisfaction based on perceived presidential leadership style and the faculty demographic variables of length of service and level of degree attained. T-Tests were conducted on the remaining two demographic questions of gender and tenure status. Lastly, Pearson correlations were conducted to determine the relationship between the survey results. The following conclusions were drawn from the statistical analyses. Overall job satisfaction of faculty at Illinois community colleges who responded to the study can be considered "ambivalent". There was a statistically moderate association between the two survey results, overall. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficients proved there is a relationship between six of the eleven LBDQ subscales and overall JSS results. They are: Initiation of Structure, Integration, Role of Assumption, Tolerance of Freedom, Persuasion and Representation. None of the demographic responses statistically impacted job satisfaction or perceptions of presidential leadership styles.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if teacher job satisfaction is enhanced when principals value and exhibit behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies. Principals and teachers from 70 elementary, middle, and high schools in the southeast United States participated in the study. The Leadership Behavior Inventory was used to collect information regarding principal behavior, as perceived by principals and teachers. The Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to collect information from teachers regarding job satisfaction. Results indicated that principals valued the 13 core competencies and frequently used them in the administration of their schools, as perceived by teachers and principals. Leadership behavior, informed by the 13 core competencies, and teacher job satisfaction were significantly correlated. These findings support that leader behavior impacts teacher job satisfaction. Principals who perceive the 13 core competencies to be important and who exhibit behavior informed by the competencies, are likely to have teachers who experience greater satisfaction than teachers under the auspices of principals not subscribing to the core competencies. .

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between perceived transformational leadership behaviors and student achievement. School achievement data and data collected through the Principal Leadership Questionnaire (PLQ) were examined to determine if a statistical relationship existed between the tranformational leadership behaviors of principal, as perceived by teachers and principals, with overall student achievement, mathematics achievement, and language arts achievement. Survey data were collected from principals and teachers in a Southwest Tn school district. A series of independent samples t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a Kruskal-Wallis test revealed a connection between the perceived behaviors exhibited by principals in higher performing schools as compared with lower performing schools. A significant difference in the teachers' perceptions was also identified in relation to a principal's ability to (a) articulate a vision, (b) provide an appropriate model, (c) foster the acceptance of group goals, (d) provide intellectual stimulation, and (f) hold high expectations. However, the study did not find a significant difference in the teachers' perceptions of a principals's ability to provide support to teachers. When determining the relationship between perceived leadership behaviors and student behavior, there was a statistically significant difference in the language art achievement of students in schools in which teachers' perceptions of transformational leadership behaviors were higher then that of the principals'. The relationship was not significant, however, for mathematics achievement and overall student achievement.

Book excerpt: With department chairs providing a critical link between faculty and administration, their leadership impacts universities on a broad level. However, chairs often report dissatisfaction with the position and experience rapid turnover. In an effort to help understand the role that communication plays in effective leadership for department chairs, this study provides an empirical test of Gibb's theory of defensive vs. supportive communication. As such, this project investigated the communication and leadership behaviors of university department chairs as evaluated by their faculty members. Specifically, 202 randomly selected faculty members from colleges and universities affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges, Washington, D.C., comprise the sample. Respondents completed a multi-page survey assessing supportive and defensive communication, Bureaucratic, Machiavellian, and Transformational leadership behaviors of their department chair, and in addition, faculty members evaluated perceived chair effectiveness, their own relational and job satisfaction, as well as organizational commitment. T-tests revealed that more effective chairs utilized all six supportive communication behaviors more and five of six defensive behaviors less than their more negatively evaluated peers. Furthermore, multiple regression procedures explained 53% of the variance in perceived chair effectiveness showing that the supportive behaviors of problem orientation and description and the defensive behaviors of strategy and control were the most powerful predictors. Secondly, a series of regression procedures were used to explore the three types of leadership included in this study; communication behaviors explained 17% of the variance in bureaucracy scores, 69% of the variance in Machiavellianism, and 62% of the variance in Transformational leadership. Lastly, the study explored faculty job satisfaction and commitment using regression models; communication behaviors explained 56% of the variance in faculty job satisfaction and 41% of the variance in organizational commitment. Based on the findings of this study four implications are discussed. The first implication is that communication does indeed matter. The second implication gleaned from this study is that leadership is a communication phenomenon. The third implication discusses the need for policy implementation of training for department chairs. Finally, it is recommended that Gibb's original instrument be utilized in more empirical research to continue to test his concepts validity.

Book excerpt: This illuminating study critiques the concept of leadership as understood in the last 75 years and looks to the twenty-first century for a reconstructed understanding of leadership in the postindustrial era. More similarities in past decades were found than had been thought; the thread throughout Rost's book is that leadership was conceived of as good management. He develops a new definition and paradigm for leadership in this volume that distinguishes leadership from management in fundamental ways. The ethics of leadership from a postindustrial perspective completes the paradigm. The book concludes with suggestions that can be immediately utilized in helping to transform our understanding of leadership.
