Book excerpt: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are exposures to experiences such as maltreatment, household dysfunction, and other traumatic or stressful events occurring in the first 18 years of life. Exposure to ACEs in childhood, a critical time for development, have been found to have enduring, negative effects on physical and mental health across the life course. Specifically, ACEs may influence the neurotransmitter systems in the brain and alter brain function leading to behaviour changes that can be observed in adulthood. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a brain plasticity factor involved in creating and maintaining connections and pathways in the brain. Pathways that utilize executive function (EF), higher order cognitive responses, may be influenced by exposure to ACEs. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between ACEs and EF and to examine whether BDNF helped to explain that relationship. The current study conducted a cross-sectional analysis that used data from the Niagara Longitudinal Heart Study which was a follow up study conducted out of Brock University. The final sample size for the current analysis was n=236. Retrospective reporting of ACEs was collected using the Childhood Trust Events Survey. The Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function Adult Version (BRIEF-A) was used to measure everyday EF and included the Inhibit and the Working Memory clinical measures and three composite measures, the Behaviour Regulation Index, Metacognition Index, and the Global Executive Composite. Finally, serum BDNF was used as a measure of current plasticity. The relationship between ACEs and BDNF was non-significant and therefore no indirect effects were explored. There was a significant relationship between accumulation of ACEs and all EF measures, and this effect was similar across males and females. The current study adds to the literature finding that accumulation of ACEs was associated with low EF clinical and composite scores in young adulthood.

Book excerpt: Individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment are more likely to have negative family environments and greater difficulties in regard to executive functioning. Family environment may also impact executive functioning difficulties. However, the current study appears to be the first study to explore whether family environment mediates (i.e., ameliorates or exacerbates) the effects of childhood trauma on executive functioning abilities. It was hypothesized that family environment would be a significant mediating variable between childhood trauma and executive functioning. Undergraduate college students (N = 105) completed self-report measures regarding history of childhood maltreatment and adverse events, family environment, and executive functioning. Correlational and linear regression analyses determined the relationships between the variables and mediational analysis determined how family environment contributes to the relationship between childhood maltreatment and executive functioning. About 66% of the participants reported experiencing at least one childhood maltreatment or childhood adversity event. Results indicated that greater impact of childhood maltreatment was related to more negative family environment and more difficulties with executive functioning. Positive family environment was related to less difficulties with executive functioning. Family environment was found to be a significant mediator between childhood maltreatment and executive functioning. The current study shows the relationships between childhood trauma, family environment, and executive functioning and is the first to show family environment as a mediating variable. The current study has implications for informing treatment practices by focusing more on family environment.

Book excerpt: Exposure to early childhood trauma has been established as a marker of developmental risk over time (Briere & Spinazzola, 2009; Perry, 2008). The generational impact of trauma exposure and the relationship between parental trauma history and current risk to children of parents with trauma histories has also been well established (Elsevier, 2010; Franklin et al., 2010). Universal systems such as schools and early childhood education programs are positioned to uniquely respond to the needs of trauma-impacted children; however often times the caregivers of these children are impacted by their own trauma histories in such a way that they do not have the skills or capabilities to follow through with interventions that could benefit the family. Using data collected as part of the WSU AHEC Safe Start randomized control intervention study (funded by US Department of Justice beginning in 2011), this study examined the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and baseline assessment completion to receive supplemental family support interventions. It was predicted that as Caregiver ACE score increased, participation would decrease. Participants were families enrolled in Spokane County Head Start who had completed ACE screening and met eligibility criteria to participate in the Safe Start intervention study (n=627). Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between parent ACE score, Child ACE score, and completion of baseline assessment. Although child ACE score was used to determine eligibility to participate in the intervention study, the parent ACE score was associated with participation rates (B = 0.075, p = .029). Contrary to the initial hypothesis, as parent total ACE score increased, the likelihood of completing the baseline assessment for randomization into intervention groups also increased.
