Book excerpt: This study explores the lived experiences of seventeen individuals, ten who teach English and seven who teach math, who operate under a mandated change to Standards Based Grading. Reporting requirements for the Common Core State Standards have prompted districts across the country to adopt Standards Based Grading (SBG), but there is little research about its impact. In-depth interviewing was employed to understand how teachers view this change in relation to their professional practice and their nuanced understandings of the change. Though almost all the participants could identify some benefit from the shift to SBG, they were unanimous in voicing concerns regarding what they experienced in their specific context. The move to SBG was disruptive to the practices of most of the teachers in this study, except for those who were newest to the field. It mandated the unseating of long-held beliefs and practices. Though packaged as a grading initiative, it challenged notions of classroom management, student engagement, instruction, and "best practice." Every teacher in this study records grades on a 0-4 scale. Every teacher in this study uses the terms formative and summative assessment, and those two types of assessments are reported identically in their grade books. This is where the similarities end in the ostensibly standardized grading landscape, with marked variation in instructional and assessment priorities existing among teachers, even those within the same content area. Teachers reported that thinking and talking about grades, grading, fairness, equity, motivation, the purpose of assessment, and the best ways to make Standards Based Grading work shifted paradigms. However, these shifts did not fundamentally change the way most teaching and learning takes place in their classrooms every day. Additionally, teachers also reported that communication with students and families became more challenging because of the move to SBG, which is in direct conflict with one of the stated aims of the implementation. Teachers varied in their perceptions of how to make SBG work better in the Metropolitan Public Schools, including abandoning it altogether, returning to its fundamental principles without any modification and making minor adjustments to better suit the unique needs of the district.

Book excerpt: Traditional K-12 grading systems are criticized as misrepresenting learning and de-motivating students (Guskey, 2009, 2011; Marzano, 2000, 2010; O’Connor, 2002, 2007; Reeves, 2004, 2011), yet grading reform is often met with resistance from parents and public. The shift from a traditional grading system (focused on points) to a standards-based grading system (focused on criteria aligned to important skills), is fraught with challenges for school leaders. The purpose of this case study was to examine how one school district transitioned from a traditional to a standards-based grading system through the lens of a framework for effective change (Fullan, 2008) and effective leadership practices (Leithwood et al., 2004). Two sub-questions were addressed: (1) what are teachers’ perceptions of how individual practice changed through the transition from traditional to standards-based grading? And (2) how might a conceptual framework that accounts for (a) factors of organization change, and (b) best practices for implementation of change in schools, inform leaders as they support teachers’ transition from traditional to standards-based grading? The site of the study was a rural school district than engaged in a five-year strategic shift from traditional to standards-based grading practices. Five years of district related documents were analyzed and interviews were conducted with secondary teachers who transitioned from traditional to standards-based grading. The interview findings indicated that teachers’ instructional practices changed by removing nonacademic factors from grades, incorporating scaffolding techniques, and analyzing student achievement data to inform instruction. The document analysis drew three broad conclusions: (1) the district clearly communicated goals to teachers; (2) the district supported the transition by hiring instructional coaches and providing resources; and (3) the district created a job-embedded professional development system utilizing release time allowing teachers to revise their practice. These results of this case study offer guidance for school leaders wishing to undertake the transition from traditional to standards-based grading. This guidance includes: specific professional development strategies for teacher; providing continuous support for teachers through the transition; and educating principals and the school board about the best ways to support teachers.

The research was conducted in one suburban school district in Central Pennsylvania. A survey and interview guide were designed to collect data from teachers and administrators as to their perceptions of the relationship between standards-based grading and improved instructional practices. The data collected were also compared to current and past research related to grading, assessment, and instructional practices. Thirty elementary teachers and elementary or district level administrators completed the online survey. Ten of the thirty teachers or administrators participated in personal interviews. Participant responses were analyzed in relation to (a) the change in instructional practices as a result of using a standards-based report card, (b) reporting and communicating achievement, and (c) the role of assessment within a standards-based grading system. The results of this study suggested a shift in instructional design for teachers as a result of reported progess through a standards-based report card. A high level of importance was given to the use of on-going formative assessment to measure growth towards individual standards. The findings indicated that changes in teachers' instructional practices were evident as a result of measuring achievement standards towards specific standards. This relationship was dependent on instructional data gathered from on-going formative assessments used to communicate achievement through a standards-based report card.

Although the inaccuracies of grading have been written about for over 100 years, schools have been slow to tackle grading reform. This research study is based on a case study which investigated the implementation of standards-based grading from traditional grading in one middle school. This case study was developed to answer one research question: How was standards-based grading implemented in the middle school? The research obtained in this case study will be used with the researcher’s own school community as they transition to standards-based grading. The case study involved semi-structured interviews of parents, teachers, and administrators along with public documents which included state mandated assessment scores and state school report cards. This study sought to extract the purpose, process, and outcomes to which the participating middle school transitioned from traditional grading to standards-based grading. The purpose for changing to standards-based grading was based on the low reading scores of graduating seniors. Over the last nine years, the process of transitioning to standards-based grading took place with several representations of the report card. The middle school’s current standards-based report card is a combination, or conversion chart of numeric levels, proficiency levels, and percentages. The outcomes for this middle school were varied based upon the individual students and their needs. Numerous lessons were learned by the researcher during this study. It is important to build capacity with all of the stakeholders when addressing the purpose of any significant change. A deep, collective understanding of the purpose for changing to standards-based grading are the foundation for a successful implementation. This type of process will vary as individual schools transition to standards-based grading, but schools must start with the end result and product clearly defined. The outcomes will be based on the building of a foundation with the purpose, as well as the level of detail and accountability throughout the process. The transition from traditional grading to standards-based grading is a daunting task that takes years to complete, but with the support and hard work of all stakeholders, it can be beneficial to the learning of all students.
