Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 72.0, Coventry University (School of Engineering, Environment and Computing), course: MSc. Management of Information Technology, language: English, abstract: The thesis aims at exploring the use of social media to improve students’ academic performance in Nigeria. The study is guided by the interpretivist theoretical perspective which follows a qualitative approach. The findings reveal that Taraba State University students have access to social media, but there is no official social media platform to build learning communities for the improvement of students’ academic performances in the university. In recent times, institutions of higher learning around the world are exploring various technologies that encourage active learning. One of such technologies is the use of social media in building learning communities. Learning communities have assisted students’ learning process by means of collaboration, sharing of ideas and information in their respective subject areas. This is in accordance with the benefits of mobile technologies and ubiquitous computing, internet of a thing and emerging technologies such as web 2.0 and social networking that has captivated the attention of students globally. It is this development that has triggered this research on use of social media to improve students’ academic performance in Nigeria. The study is guided by the interpretivist theoretical perspective which follows a qualitative approach. The case study method and triangulation sampling are employed for indept data collection. Interviews, online survey and observation are used as sources of primary data collection. Constant comparative analysis method is used to analyse the data. Social media has become an integral part of people’s life as this technology enables people to network with friends and associates, share photographs, generate contents, interact in games and real time conversations. The ever-increasing proliferation of mobile technologies has increased the use of social media, more especially in universities where the technology is transforming the way students communicate, collaborate, interact and learn.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The Internet and in particular social media applications such as Facebook, YouTube and many others, are obviously “overtaking the world” and could be regarded as “a global consumer phenomenon” (Camilia, Ibrahim, & Dalhatu, 2013) . Social media usage is one of the most common activities among children, adolescents, and emerging adults nowadays. It offers today’s youth a portal for entertainment and communication and it is becoming one of the main platforms for accessing information and news. This aggressive adoption of social media among the younger generation could be attributed to their up to date knowledge of and comfort with the latest technology and the convenient accessibility to these social networking tools (Vorderer, 2016). This study aims to shed the light on the social media effects on the academic performance of university students in Egypt and aims to clarify to different stakeholders the relationship between the social media usage and academic performance and to harness full potential of social media. This study examines the role of social media in students’ academic endeavors and ultimately their academic performance through their reported perceptions and reflections. It also examines factors that might influence the nature of this relationship, and its tentative impact on the academic performance of Nile University undergraduate students. An explanatory sequential mixed method approach is employed in order to get both quantitative and qualitative data, the responses of 442 Nile university undergraduate student were collected and were scored, coded and inserted into SPSS, and were analyzed using multiple statistical descriptive and inferential statistical tests based on the research question and the nature of the data to be analyzed using frequency tables, crosstabs, Anovas, post hocs and t-tests. The findings of the study explains the perception of Nile university students of social media effects on their academic performance, and to what extend do they use social media for academic related purposes, and it explores the effect of the different academic majors, academic statues and gender on the social media usage perception and usage. Significant differences in the behavior of students from different academic majors and different academic status in perceiving and using social media emerged which might require further investigation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative multiple participant case study was to identify the influence of social media on Saudi graduate students who are active social media users. Social media have been influencing Saudi students differently than those in other socio-cultural contexts due to the uniqueness of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in terms of cultural, political, economic, and social life. This study contributes to educational technology broadly and understanding the experiences of Saudi graduate students who are active social media users specifically. This study sought to illuminate and clarify understanding of the influence of social media use on graduate students in the KSA. This study investigated the influence of social media on Saudi graduate students through the experience of six Saudi graduate students who have 200K or more followers/subscribers on YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat. Vygotsky-based social constructivism was used to analyze and interpret the findings of the research in an effort to understand and make sense of the impact of social media on education through the participants' experiences as graduate students and active social media users. The significant findings of this research support social constructivism, in that learning occur through social interaction with the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) in the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The findings of the study included three emerging themes: (1) social media experience, (2) social media influence, and (3) changes brought by social media. Two categories emerged from the data under the first theme. The categories are (a) planned versus unplanned fame, and (b) social media preferred sites, activities and topics. Three categories and two sub-categories emerged from the second theme: (a) educational influence, which has two sub-categories --(i) formal teaching and learning (ii) informal learning --; (b) financial influence; and (c) gender issues in social media. The results contribute to the limited qualitative research on Saudi graduate students and social media and to the overall social constructivism research in the KSA higher education.

Book excerpt: Researchers' attention has been drawn to blended learning (BL) methodologies during the past ten years because of their emphasis on combining traditional face-to-face learning with the use of technology. Numerous studies that study the effects of BL on teaching and learning have been undertaken, and many researchers have investigated the usefulness of BL. There hasn't yet been a case study that assesses how well BL taught Saudi Arabian students’ English medical terms. The goal of the study was to evaluate the impact of BL on an experimental group of students who were using WhatsApp and Jazan Jump Blackboard to expand their vocabulary as they prepared to pursue careers in medicine. Their learning was contrasted with that of the control group. Group, which only used face-to-face methods and one piece of technology (Blackboard). The current study looked at how various BL approaches affected attitudes, feelings of anxiety, and self-efficacy in both the controlled and experimental groups, as well as student engagement and self-efficacy. The study looked at how English medical terminology teachers behaved in relation to their teaching experience, prior usage of platforms like WhatsApp and Jazan Jump Blackboard, preferred teaching strategies, attitudes towards technology, constructivist beliefs, and understanding of digital self-efficacy. Four sources were used in the current study to gather data: interviews, questionnaires, and pre- and post-tests. Pre- and post-test results showed that combining in-person instruction with WhatsApp and Jazan Jump Blackboard can have a positive effect on student progress. Based on the findings of the experimental group, survey data, and data analysis, it was revealed that instructional, cognitive, and social presence in a hybrid setting had a beneficial impact on student engagement. Compared to medical students in a typical classroom, students who used WhatsApp and Jazan Jump were generally more capable, self-regulated, and suffered mild anxiety. Concerning WhatsApp and Jazan Jump, teachers observed low to moderate proficiency levels. Positive learning outcomes for students from BL with various electronic tools can inspire instructors with all levels of technological proficiency to adopt innovative learning techniques and technology into the classroom.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Social media has become a necessary form of communication for young adults in nearly all contexts of life. One such context is in higher education, specifically, university students who are connected and "online" nearly 24 hours a day. Not only are these young adults integrating social media into their collegiate academic experiences both formally and informally, university faculty are also using this form of communication to support their teaching. In recent years, a number of countries in the Middle East have started to use social-networking sites (SNSs) for communication with regularity. One country with a significant proportion of social media users is Saudi Arabia (SA), with Saudi university students being the largest group of active users. In the current study, two scales measuring social media use were translated into Arabic and used with a large sample of undergraduate students in SA. Purpose: Manuscript 1's objective was to examine the psychometric properties (i.e., content and construct validity; internal consistency reliability) of the Arabic version of the Social Networking Time Use Scale (SONTUS) among Saudi undergraduate students. Manuscript 2's purpose was to examine the same psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Social Media and Academic Performance of Students (SMAPOS) scale in a sample of Saudi undergraduate students. Additionally, the functioning of items in both scales was evaluated across male and female students. Methods: A total of 508 undergraduate students at one, large university in SA participated in this study and completed the Arabic versions of both scales (i.e., the SONTUS and the SMAPOS). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Internal Consistency Reliability, and Differential Item Functioning (DIF) were used to analyze the data. Results: Manuscript 1 results showed that the Arabic version of the SONTUS contained three subscales and overall had good psychometric properties. These results suggest that the SONTUS can be used to measure the frequency of time spent using SNSs among Saudi students. Also, the results indicated that there were some differences in social media use item functioning between male and female Saudi students. Manuscript 2 findings revealed that the Arabic version of the SMAPOS had two subscales and good psychometric properties indicating that the scale is suitable to measure Saudi university students' attitudes toward the use of social media and academic performance. Moreover, there were no differences in social media attitude item functioning between male and female Saudi students.

Book excerpt: No longer relegated to just the classroom, learning has become universal through the use of social media. Social media embodies constructivism itself as the users engage in the development of their own meaning. And, constructivism is relevant to education, and learning theory and technological advance can be better understood in the light of one another. This volume explores: particular areas influenced by constructivist thinking and social media, such as student learning, faculty development, and pedagogical practices, practical and useful ways to engage in social media, and dialogue and discussions regarding the nature of learning in relation to the technology that has changed how both faculty and students experience their educational landscape. This is the 144th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education series. It offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

This study investigated if there is a significant correlation between the purposes of use, time spent by students, motives and gratifications, and university students' academic performance. 971 responses were collected through an online survey using a convenience sample technique. This study found that participants use social media more for socialization and entertainment needs rather than academic needs and purposes. This study suggested a statistically significant correlation existed between time spent on social media and participants' entertainment purposes of use and their academic performance. A statistically significant correlation was not found between participants' socialization and academic purposes of use, instrumental and ritualistic motives, and students' GPA. The key factor that determines the possible impact of social media use is how much time a student spends on social media platforms.

Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is among the top 10 countries from which students have enrolled in U.S. universities. The scarcity of research about Saudi students in the USA was the inspiration for this study. Previous researchers have examined Saudi students' challenges and adjustment issues in the USA, but the topic of social support and academic performance remained lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived social support (PSS) and academic performance among Saudi international students in USA. This study was a cross-sectional quantitative survey design with a sample of 384 Saudi students enrolled in USA universities and colleges. The perceived social support (PSS) was measured by the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL) while the academic performance variable was included in the demographic questionnaire and measured by GPA. The findings indicate that Saudi students maintain a high level of perceived social support, and more than half of the participants have a GPA higher than 3.50. The results reveal that gender, age, and having children have a significant relationship with the PSS. In addition, age, marital status, having children and years living in the USA are significantly associated with academic performance. Furthermore, findings indicate a weak relationship between perceived social support and academic performance. Demographic variables including gender, marital status, having children, and years living in the USA show statistically significant differences with PSS; in reference to academic performance, the statistically significant differences exist with the demographic variables of marital status, having children, age, and level of education.

Book excerpt: "Students' use of technology and new media is of central interest to educational technology and psychology scholars. One of the most salient questions of students' technology use is the impact on academic performance. In this vein, recent scholarship has addressed the relationship between social networking sites (SNS) and academic performance. However, the findings suggest a lack of agreement on the nature of the relationship between SNS use and academic performance. Since the use of SNS have become ubiquitous, it is essential to understand their impact, especially on students' academic preparation and achievement. To address the gaps in the literature, this dissertation, composed of three empirical studies, examines the relationship between social networking and academic performance in a sample of pre-university science students. This research contributes to the literature by expanding the understanding of how students' social networking is linked to their academic performance. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the implications as well as avenues for future research." --

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of internet and communication technology has made human beings to quickly connect and interact with group of people from any part of the world, through their PC or mobile phone. Adolescent age people are more attracted by Social Networking Site (SNS), a platform for people to share their ideas, express their feelings and to reconnect with old friends. The student's community spends their daily life's considerable time in different activities by a set of names as Wall Posts, Status Updates, Activity Updates, Activity feeds, Profile Building, Thumbs Ups and chatting. This study will focus on the effect of SNS on student academic performance, using SIMS (Srinivas Institute of Management Studies), Mangalore city in Karnataka State of India as a case study. A review of literature is done on negative correlates and relationship between academic performance and usage of SNS.
