Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two different fluency-based reading interventions as determined by fluency progress monitoring rates of participants and teacher-perceived usefulness toward the progression towards the participants' grade-level goals as measured on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) standardized test. This study was precipitated by the recent adoption of a Response to Intervention (RtI) approach in the school setting. This approach is designed to increase student achievement of students who are "below," "at," or "beyond" grade level expectations. This study specifically looked at students who are categorized as "below" grade level in reading achievement. The Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) intervention was utilized with 6th and 7th grade students during the first research period (Study 1) and "The Six-Minute Solution" was used with a group of 5th and 6th grade students during the second research period (Study 2). Results indicated the interventions did have an overall positive effect on the fluency rates and the standardized tests scores achieved by the students in this study.

The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in student fluency achievement between repeated reading and traditional reading methods. The data that was collected was comprised of a class of sixteen second grade students from a very small, rural town. The class was divided into two equal groups: traditional and repeated reading. The traditional group received fluency practice in a traditional manner while the repeated reading group only focused on repeated reading. Each student was given a one-minute fluency test at the end of each week for a five week period. The findings were analyzed through Microsoft Excel and A Statistical Program (ASP). The results indicated that there was a slight difference as demonstrated by the traditional mean of 80.15 compared to the repeated reading mean of 88.48, but not a significant statistical difference between the traditional and repeated reading method. Further study in the effectiveness of repeated reading on fluency is warranted. The school may want to consider extending this research for a second year and for a longer period of time.

A pre-experimental A-B design replicated across three students was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Each student worked one-on-one with the researcher. Dependent measures included words read correctly per minute on novel grade level passages from AIMSweb and words read per correctly per minute on practiced grade level passages from AIMSweb. In addition, after intervention, students were given grade level passages in science to assess for generalization and data were collected on words read correctly per minute. At the conclusion of intervention, participants (students and their classroom teacher) completed a questionnaire indicating their levels of satisfaction with the procedures and outcomes of the intervention. Results of the study indicated no functional relation between duet reading on reading fluency when reading novel reading passages but do indicate a functional relation between duet reading and reading fluency on repeated readings.

The Oral Reading Fluency subtest from the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (3rd edition) and the Reading Fluency subtest from the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement Revised III were also administered. These assessments were given in the winter as a baseline and again in the spring to measure the students' reading fluency growth. Data was analyzed to measure the effectiveness of using the strategy of repeated readings to increase the reading fluency rate of students with reading disabilities.

A pre-and post-implementation assessment measuring each participant's correct words per minute (CWPM) and instructional reading level (lRL) by grade were taken to determine effects of the oral reading fluency program. The results of this study, though not statistically significant, indicate that the implementation of The Six-Minute Solution in self contained classrooms for students with learning disabilities can have a positive effect on their oral reading fluency rates. The research project was conducted daily for six weeks. The participants were all in a second grade, general education setting. They were also classified as being below grade level in reading and placed in the RTI Tier 2 reading group. During these eight weeks, the participants received daily reading fluency interventions which were "Read with Partner" or "Paired Reading" and "Timed Repeated Readings". The goal for these participants was to improve their fluency rate. This intervention required the participants to be actively involved in their learning. Twice a week students' reading aloud words per minute was recorded. After 8 weeks of the interventions, it was found that students reading below grade level were able to increase their reading fluency rates anywhere between 12% and 200%. It was also found that fluency instruction positively influenced reading comprehension within classroom instruction.

It is essential that students receive reading strategies in the classroom that have strong research support. Instructional strategies that have been shown to improve reading fluency include: repeated reading, listening passage preview, and phrase drill. Through the use of such evidence-based, procedurally standardized intervention strategies, teachers may be able to make meaningful contributions to improve studentsâ€TM reading fluency. This study was conducted in an effort to bridge research to practice by offering an example of effectiveness (versus efficacy) research on a multi-component, evidence-based reading fluency intervention referred the Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) Program. The primary purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the HELPS Program with low-performing second grade students when implemented by four classroom teachers and teacher assistants in a minimally controlled setting. Results from the study suggested that 29 students who received HELPS significantly improved (from pre-test to post-test) on the measure of basic reading competence when compared to a control group of 30 students, with low-performing students who received HELPS making significantly larger reading gains than students who did not receive the program. In addition, the study demonstrated that such outcomes are achievable when teachers and teacher assistants implement the program. Given these findings, HELPS appears to be a useful and practical tool for educatorsâ€TM use in elementary school settings.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.

Book excerpt: Given the predictive validity of early reading skills for future reading proficiency, early assessment and intervention in the primary grades are of vital importance. The stakes are particularly high for those students who are deemed "at risk" for current and future reading problems. Students who are blind and read braille may be at enhanced risk for literacy problems relating, for example, to reading speed and accuracy, or oral reading fluency (ORF) (Coppins & Barlow-Brown, 2006). However, the field of visual impairment lacks a "body of empirically-based, experimental research" to inform the development and use of interventions to address such reading challenges (Ferrell, Mason, Young, & Cooney, 2006, p. 4). The purpose of this study is to build on the limited repeated reading research that shows promise for improving ORF for students with visual impairments, targeting braille-reading students evidencing ORF-related challenges in the critical primary grades. The intervention design was informed by the Instructional Hierarchy's (Raring, Lovitt, Eaton, & Hansen, 1978) stage model of learning such that the intervention was matched to the skill-based needs of the participants (Daly & Martens, 1994). Accordingly, the intervention drew heavily on empirically validated best practices, employing curriculum based measurement (CBM) and user-friendly assessment materials to investigate the effects of a repeated reading intervention on ORF within a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline design was used to investigate whether there was a functional relationship between the implementation of the repeated reading intervention and ORF and comprehension. Participants' response to the intervention was measured using assessment materials designed as High Content Overlap (HCO) passages and Low Content Overlap (LCO) passages. The study also investigated the social validity of the intervention for teachers for students with visual impairments (TVIs).
