Book excerpt: Author's abstract: African American males have a more meaningful college experience when they are mentored with people with whom they can culturally relate (Brown, 2013; Moore & Tolliver, 2010). Although studies indicate African American males who had same race mentors display higher self-efficacy (Stefon, 2011), improved graduation rates (U.S. Department of Education, 2017), and a more positive college experience (Chen, Ingram & Davis, 2014), additional research in this area is needed. Using a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study sought to determine the impact having a same race mentor had on the collegiate experiences of five African American males who successfully graduated from colleges in Georgia. Data collected through semi-structured interviews addressed the overarching research question: What are the perceptions of African American male college students regarding the impact of same race mentor relationships on their college experience? and the two sub-questions related to this study: 1) To what extent did having a same race mentor affect the African American male college students’ persistence in college?; 2) To what extent did having a same race mentor affect the African American male college students’ self-efficacy regarding feeling as though they belong in the higher education environment? The participants shared that same race mentor relationships improved their college experience through providing intentional guidance and support.

Book excerpt: Background: Disproportionate failure and health issues of African American students enrolled at institutions of higher learning has been the focus of much discourse. Studies converge on multiple themes of students having inadequate support systems while documenting their experiences relating to students, faculty and non-academic staff of other races. Purpose: In exploring whether mentorship may have a beneficial effect in reversing the trend on the college success rates of African American students, the perception of full-time African American students on the effect of mentorship on their graduation rate and retention was examined. Methods: The participants are all African American college students in varying disciplines to ensure different experiences. First, analyzing the immediate experiences of African American students who have participated in mentorship programs while attending an institution of higher learning, the study developed a framework of mentorship. Second, examining their perception, the study identified several linkages between these students’ campus experiences and their perception of mentorship. In this phenomenological study, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight participants. Data was analyzed through a coding mechanism using Carspecken’s critical ethnographic framework, while the theoretical development was based on Mezirow’s grounded theory approach. Results: Results of the study revealed that subjects believed their advisors and peers were unable to relate to their struggles. Those struggles included experiencing greater stress and receiving disproportionately inadequate lack of support from peers and faculty. Subjects overwhelmingly supported mentorship. They felt the trajectory of their academic and post-college journey would have been significantly better if provided mentoring. Conclusion: Based on the study results, universities could formulate a long-term plan to introduce formal mentorship, where mentors would be given rigorous training for mentorship programs. Finally, a successful implementation of mentorship programs based on this study will go a long way towards alleviating a vexing problem in the American education system.

Book excerpt: Although African-American males are enrolling in community colleges, their graduation rates are alarmingly low and there is a dearth of research about why this is the case. "Despite the high number of African American students enrolled in two-year institutions," argued Bush and Bush (2010), "there is a pronounced scarcity of educational literature and research about the community college system in general and African American students specifically" (p. 40). Harris and Wood (2013) also gave credence to the fact that it was not until after 2010 that scholars began researching men of color at community colleges. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to document and better understand the college-going experience of degree-seeking, first-generation, African-American males at an urban community college in the Midwest so that future African-American male students can be better supported in their quest for a higher education. Harper (2014) asked researchers to stop mischaracterizing young men of color and offer more than a one-sided narrative. This study aims to achieve that and also includes topics overlooked in the research: distinctive interventions for community colleges, personal reasons students drop out, the challenge of balancing academic and social pressures, and the need for qualitative research regarding the experiences of African-American males. In this study, major findings from 15 semi-structured interviews, demographic questionnaires, and support network diagrams are examined through an anti-deficit framing lens. Several themes emerged from the analysis process. Four of the major themes describe what contributes to associate degree completion for African-American males: importance of family and mentors, significance of believing in success, impact of community support, and influence of faculty connections. Four of the major themes are categorized as challenges to degree completion for African-American males. These are: complexities of being a first generation student, questioning the value of higher education, difficulties of college, and facing the reality of racism. Themes that emerged from this research indicate the ways faculty, student services professionals, and fellow students can best support African-American male students. This study also suggests that if community colleges truly want to see an increase in the number of African-American males graduating, there will need to be a college-wide strategy and implementation behind any social mobility objectives--not just words but action is needed. One participant offered a charge to readers that should persist beyond this dissertation regarding how instructors, staff, and students can best support African-American males at a community college: Just educate [yourself] about our experiences. Like you're doing. Talk to us, learn, see what they went through, see the challenges they went through to get where they are now, and what possible challenges they might face in the future.

Book excerpt: The Brother Code: What is the role of manhood and masculinity in the lives of African American males in college? How do manhood norms influence decisions within and beyond college? How might mothers and fathers differentially affect manhood and masculinity in their sons? What are African American’s men unique ways of knowing themselves and their surroundings? The Brother Code: Manhood and Masculinity among African American Men in College situates itself at the intersection of higher education and cultural studies to address these questions and more. Primarily, this book offers colleges and universities a penetrative gaze into a complex web of identities—the manhood of African American males in college. Yet the book also seizes a rare opportunity in higher education research to review six historical eras of African American manhood as well as the troublesome relationship between African American males and education in general. This knowledge is important for understanding all aspects of African American male participation in college, including enrollment, retention, curricular, and co-curricular involvement. Based on an empirical study, the data in this book emerged from one-on-one interviews in which 24 African American males enrolled in 12 colleges discussed how manhood matters in their social and college lives. The aim is to help unearth the marginalized topics of manhood, gender, and masculinity in males generally but, more specifically among African American males, a marginalized student group in education. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the book draws upon literature in history, African American studies, gender studies, sociology, cultural studies, psychology, and anthropology.
