Book excerpt: This study examined which social supports parents of children with autism identify as most and least helpful, and why some social supports are perceived to be more or less helpful. Participants were 47 primary caregivers of children with autism who completed questionnaires about demographic characteristics, the severity of their child's autism, their own stress level, and the perceived helpfulness of various social supports and reasons for their perceived helpfulness. The severity of the child's autism was a significant predictor of overall parental stress level as well as each of the PSI subscales. Parents identified their spouses/partners, trained in-home therapist/respite workers, family members, and the child's teacher as the most helpful social supports. They identified religious community members, babysitters, autism spectrum disorder support groups online, and the child's physician as the least helpful social supports. -- From the author's abstract.

Book excerpt: This study studied the relationship between parental perceptions of stressors and indicators of resilience in families with children diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The following parental perceptions were surveyed; (a) parental coping level, (b) parental stress level, (c) child’s health, (d) child’s social and emotional functioning, (e) spouse/partner relationship satisfaction, (f) overall parental health as potential indicators of parental or family resilience. Secondary data from the 2011 National Survey of Children’s Health were used to examine the parent respondents (n = 1376) who were raising at least one child (ages 6-17) currently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The findings of this study suggested that parental stress is impacted by parental perceptions of their level of coping as an indicator of resilience. This study’s findings suggested that a parent’s perceptions of their level of coping is positively correlated with parental perception of the ASD child’s health, parental perception of their child’s social and emotional functioning, parental relationship satisfaction and parental health of families raising children with ASD. In addition, parents accessing the formal external support of counseling for the child with ASD as an indicator of resilience was analyzed for this research. These results vi specified counseling support to be negatively correlated with parental perception of the health of child with ASD as well as the mother’s perception of her overall health. However, the formal support of counseling as an indicator of resilience positively correlated with parental perception of coping, child social, and emotional functioning, father’s overall health, and parental relationship satisfaction. The final indicator of resilience analyzed in this study was the informal support of parents having an individual they could turn to in a time of need. This research indicated a relationship between the presence of an informal support system for the ASD parent and their perception of spousal relationship satisfaction and overall parental health. The study emphasized the potential benefits of incorporating indicators of resilience to counter the impact of families parenting a child with autism. Implications and recommendations for future research are presented for mental health providers, school, or community professional who are in contact with ASD families.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: Parenting an individual with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is uniquely challenging and enhancing resources like social support is important for promoting well-being. Within the field of ASD, social support has generally been measured broadly and studies have focused on a single facet of social support rather than incorporating different components, such as received and perceived support. It is unclear how received and perceived support uniquely relate to parent well-being. We also know very little about the factors that lead to higher levels of perceived social support or the potential reciprocal relationship social support has with other factors for parents of children with ASD. With a sample of 249 caregivers of individuals with ASD, this study assessed the strength of association between received and perceived social support, and compared the stress-buffering effects of both support types. This study also assessed the reciprocal relationships between perceived social support and parent perceived stress, self-efficacy, and child behaviour problems across a one-year period using three time points. Results showed perceived and received support were related but distinct concepts. When examined together in a single model, perceived support was significantly associated with stress and received support was not. Neither social support measure significantly moderated the association between stressors and stress. The longitudinal analyses showed less evidence for reciprocal relationships than hypothesized. There was some evidence for a reciprocal relationship between self-efficacy and perceived social support, but significant bi-directional associations were not observed between perceived social support and child behaviour problems or between perceived support and stress. Baseline perceived social support significantly predicted 6-month child behaviour and 6-month stress, but neither of those significantly predicted social support. This study adds to our understanding of social support and clarifies how perceived social support relates to other family factors longitudinally.

This study addresses parent's perceptions of the value of the Down Syndrome Association of Central California Parent2Parent support group. Research Question: What are the parents, of children with intellectual disabilities, perceived helpfulness of the Parent2Parent support group at the Down Syndrome Association of Central California? Methods: The researcher carried out a qualitative, exploratory design involving one 50-minute focus group. The sample consisted of six mothers that attended the Parent2Parent support group in March. Participants were of different ages, ethnicities, and marital status. Due to the large age range of participants, each individual was dealing with different parenting struggles, including integrating their child into a regular classroom, toilet training, and moving an adult into their own home. They were given a short anonymous data sheet and asked the following six questions that were discussed in focus group: In what ways is this support group helping you? Has attending changed the way you parent your vi child with a developmental disability? Has attending the group changed how you interact with others at home? Has attending the group helped you interact with individuals working with your child? Has attending this support group changed your outlook on life- either positively or negatively? What would you change to make this group more helpful? Results: Through their experiences, parents shared that the support group has benefitted attendees in areas of parenting their developmentally disabled child, interaction and communication with others regarding their child, changes in parenting techniques and given a positive outlook on life and their child's future. Several ideas were given to improve the group including increasing the amount of meetings per month, having meetings at attendees homes, and spending time on specific topics. Discussion: Overall, parents perceived positive outcomes from social support received at the Parent2Parents support group. Future research should increase sample size in order to have more accurate results.

As we move into our second decade, we are frequently questioned about all aspects of our procedures, techniques, and program. Of all the questions that are asked, however, the one that comes up most frequently and seems to set our program apart from others concerns the ways in which we work with families. To help answer this question we identified what we have found to be the major components in our parent-professional relationships, and we elaborate on these with the most current research informa tion, clinical insights, and community knowledge available through the expertise of our distinguished contributors. Our purpose was to collect the most recent information and to organize the resulting volume along the outlines of the par ent-professional relationship found most important in the TEACCH program. Thus, the four main sections of the book include these four major ways profes sionals work with parents: as their advocates, their trainers, their trainees, and their reciprocal emotional support source. To the extent this effort was success ful, we acknowledge that it is easier to organize book chapters along these dimensions than it is to provide their implementation in the field.

With an increasing population of individuals with ASD moving into adulthood, there is growing need to better understand ways to improve outcomes during the transition to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of parents during their child's transition out of their local educational agency services and into adulthood. The following questions directed this study: What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and co-occurring ID regarding the effectiveness of transition planning during school-aged services? What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and co-occurring ID regarding their child's preparation for adult services? What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and cooccurring ID regarding their child's quality of life after transitioning to adulthood? This study found that parents perceived the school transition planning process as individualized, included parent input, and incorporated student specific strengths and interests. Yet, the study showed an absence of continuity between the transition planning process and the success of the actual transition. Participants in this study conveyed the importance of incorporating the school team in the identification of an adult service provider, the need for transparency during the transition, and improved training and oversight for adult service providers regarding individuals with complex needs.

Book excerpt: Research has shown the parenting responsibilities that come with a child with special needs differ from the responsibilities of parenting a normally developing child (Benn, Akiva, Arel, & Roeser, 2012). To provide adequate levels of care for children with special needs parents may endure challenging experiences, resulting in parents becoming overwhelmed and experiencing higher levels of stress than other parents (Bazzano et al., 2013). Support may be available through family members, schools, and other organizations, but often, parents seek the support of those who have had similar experiences (Baum, 2004). This study examined a special education parent’s perceived stress and how the parent utilizes social media support by using a correlational design within a normative adult population. Lessenberry & Rehfeldt (2004) examined the concept of stress among parents of children with developmental disabilities and broke the concept into four domains: stressor, strain, coping resources, and coping strategies. Additionally, when examining the theoretical makeup of stress, vulnerabilities must be considered to conceptualize how a person may handle their experiences and what may develop during those experiences (Ingram & Price, 2010). Statistical analysis found that there is no relationship between social media support and a special education parent’s perceived stress. The analysis did find that a special education parent’s perceived stress is related to the education setting of the child and the severity of the disability. -- From abstract.
