Book excerpt: Factors influencing teachers` levels of technology self-efficacy were examined through a qualitative multi-site, multi-subject case study research design. An initial survey was administered to all full-time, certified teachers at three school sites in order to gauge teachers` current level of technology self-efficacy. From that population, purposive and systematic samplings were used to draw the participants for the case study. A group of nine teachers with varying levels of technology self-efficacy was interviewed and participated in one of three focus groups to better understand factors influencing their current level of self-efficacy. A document analysis was also performed of local school professional development plans. Results revealed several factors that influenced teachers` technology self-efficacy, including personal, behavioral, and environmental factors. Common themes emerged that indicate more can be done to foster increased technology self-efficacy in teachers, which may in turn enhance students` learning experiences.

Before the project, all of the faculty members had experiences with technology, such as emails, Internet searches and PowerPoint applications. During the project, most of them learned web page design and more technology integration into their curriculum and instruction. The purpose of this study is to respond to the need to identify, study and disseminate examples of technology using teachers and portray a group of education faculty members after they experienced a federally funded technology-based project. Their practices, beliefs, and factors that influence their beliefs and practices with technology integration are the focus of this study. Based on the literature and the research studies, the following questions were formulated in the following: 1. How has participation in the technology-based project influenced faculty members2 beliefs and practices with technology integration? 2. What are the factors that influence faculty members2 practices regardingtechnology? The findings are the following. All participants have always believed that technology is an important tool and should be integrated into the teaching and learning. However they believe that technology is not the only tool that can be used to enhance teaching and learning. Their experienced in the grant project have increased their confidence and comfort in using technology by being exposed to presentations and having real hands-on activities within a certain time period that did not conflict their academic calendars. Factors that influence their beliefs and practices are: experiences in the project, access to technology and technical problems, Administrative support (from the department and project directors) and technical support: from the students, from faculty, from technician, technological leadership, communication within the community and outside, time, and subject Issues. Internal factors identified include personal belief, personal feelings with technology use, demand of time to learn, learning style, and classroom teaching.

Many of the barriers to using computers to support student learning identified in earlier studies have been removed or reduced. Nevertheless, examples of schoolwide technology integration in elementary settings are rare. The study used Fullan's (1991, 2001) change theory as a framework for examining the implementation of instructional technology in five elementary schools in one school district in Ohio. One of the five schools was studied in more depth than the other four. The research questions focused specifically on four change factors-Need, Clarity, Complexity, and Quality and Practicality. The research design employed both qualitative and quantitative methods. The study findings were based on four data sets: 1) a survey administered to teachers in five elementary schools, 2) two classroom observations, 3) interviews with teachers and technology leaders, and 4) artifacts from the district technology office and one school. The study demonstrated the utility of Fullan's change theory for examining implementation progress in technology integration initiatives and produced four major findings: 1) Teachers who used technology extensively for their own work also used computers more often to support student learning. 2) Teachers' direct experiences with technology played a critical role in the development of their felt need for technology integration. 3) The clarity of technology integration was strengthened through teachers' involvement in technology planning, lesson invention, peer-to-peer mentoring, and leadership modeling. 4) A majority of teachers did not feel well prepared to design technology-enhanced learning opportunities for students or to assess students' use of technology.

The study surveyed 73 high school English, math, science and social studies teachers in south central Pennsylvania about how students use technology for learning, device availability and frequency of use, as well as teachers' own personal and professional use of technology for learning. Eight teachers agreed to also participate in a structured interview. The study revealed greater use of technology by teachers for professional learning when compared to personal learning. However, professional learning did not necessarily support individual teacher needs to enhance instructional delivery or the development of learning experiences for students. Technology has not yet become an integral part of learning in the high schools surveyed, although a 1:1 level of access showed a higher percentage of total responses for the use of technology to personalize learning. The study also demonstrated that all teachers do not have a clear or accurate understanding of personalized learning.
