Understanding the dynamics that naturally maintain these systems is becoming increasingly important in the face of accelerated sea-level rise. Ceramic tiles, radioisotopes (210Pb and 137Cs), shoreline mapping, and stable isotope ([delta]13C and [delta]15N) analysis were used to evaluate short-term deposition relative to decadal-scale accumulation and assess whether two marshes in northeastern North Carolina were maintaining their systems relative to sea-level rise. It was determined that deposition is highly influenced by marsh geomorphology, with higher deposition rates along the shoreline, and lower deposition rates in the marsh interior. Continuous berms severely reduced interior marsh deposition, while discontinuous berms allowed for more direct inundation and sedimentation. Deposition was varied temporally, but was generally dependent on wind events. Hurricanes provide enhanced deposition to the marsh, which aids in vertical marsh accretion. While shoreline erosion provided some sediment for vertical accretion, a large amount of the eroded material is transported elsewhere. Accumulation rates suggested that these marshes have been keeping pace with sea-level during the last century.

It provides potential users with an analysis and interpretation of the available information on this subject. The role of marshes, the feasibility of marsh creation, and the effects of elevation, salinity, slope, exposure, and soils on marsh establishment are discussed. Plants suitable for marsh building are described by the major regions. Plant propagation, planting, fertilization, and management of the major plants are discussed. Labor and material requirements for marsh creation are summarized. Keywords: Coastal engineering; Gulf coast; Planting; East Coast; West Coast; Grasses; Wetland plants; Transplantation; Sediment accumulation; Marsh soils; Florida; Marsh building; Marsh vegetation; Stabilization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina barrier islands, a 325-mile-long string of narrow sand islands that forms the coast of North Carolina, are one of the most beloved areas to live and visit in the United States. However, extensive barrier island segments and their associated wetlands are in jeopardy. In The Battle for North Carolina's Coast, four experts on coastal dynamics examine issues that threaten this national treasure. According to the authors, the North Carolina barrier islands are not permanent. Rather, they are highly mobile piles of sand that are impacted by sea-level rise and major storms and hurricanes. Our present development and management policies for these changing islands are in direct conflict with their natural dynamics. Revealing the urgency of the environmental and economic problems facing coastal North Carolina, this essential book offers a hopeful vision for the coast's future if we are willing to adapt to the barriers' ongoing and natural processes. This will require a radical change in our thinking about development and new approaches to the way we visit and use the coast. Ultimately, we cannot afford to lose these unique and valuable islands of opportunity. This book is an urgent call to protect our coastal resources and preserve our coastal economy.

Book excerpt: Combined paleoecological and geochronological analyses can provide a critical tool for understanding coastal marsh development and ecological response to perturbations, such as sea-level rise and tropical storms, particularly in regions like coastal Louisiana, where high rates of wetland loss threaten an ecologically and economically important ecosystem. Analysis of sediment cores from Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge identify sediment deposition from storm surge and show that diatom assemblage of hurricane sediments are dissimilar from non-storm sediments and have the potential for examining historical frequency of storms. Chronology and vertical accretion rates calculated from 210Pb radioisotope using the constant flux : constant sedimentation method provided the best match to an independent tracer (137Cs), and indicate that marsh rates of vertical accretion are generally lower than regional estimates of mean sea-level rise, despite recent hurricane deposition. Contemporary diatom samples from 46 sites located throughout the Chenier plain were examined to test the relationship between diatom assemblage and environmental parameters.
