Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although self-disclosure is not equivalent to and does not define the level of intimacy in a relationship, it is a major factor in the relationship's development, maintenance, and deterioration. Conversely, the level of closeness between relationship partners (whether the individuals are acquaintances, friends, lovers, or relatives) affects the meaning and impact of disclosure. Compelling and informative, Self-Disclosure focuses on the role of self-disclosure in close relationships and illustrates how individuals negotiate with their relationship partners--what, when, where, and how they communicate personal feelings and thoughts. The authors examine how close relationships and self-disclosure are mutually transformative; where self-disclosure and relationships mutually interact to affect one another; how subcultural differences between males and females influence self-disclosure in relationships; how the vulnerability and risk associated with disclosing personal information leads relationship partners to be concerned about privacy regulation; and how stress-reducing disclosure, associated with the willingness to talk about stressful events, provides both a means of coping with unpleasant life events and access to social support. With sensitive coverage of the major themes of self-disclosure, this volume is ideally suited for students, researchers, and practitioners interested in close relationships, interpersonal communication, social psychology, gender studies, family studies, counseling and clinical psychology, social work, and sociology. "For someone looking for a good review of the literature on self-disclosure and close relationships, this book fits the bill, providing a quick and easy way to sort through theory....for the researcher, the authors provide questionnaire materials in most chapters to illustrate how data might be collected." --Families in Society

Book excerpt: Studies suggest that sharing thoughts and information with others may be inherently pleasurable and confer health, psychological, and social benefits to the discloser. At the same time, self-disclosure exposes individuals to scrutiny and the risk of rejection and reputational damage, particularly with the advent of digital applications and social media outlets that promote public, and often permanent, disclosing. In an effort to understand the tradeoffs that underlie the decision to disclose, we introduce a distinction between the propensity to disclose and the psychological desire to disclose and present a preliminary investigation into when and why these two constructs diverge. Findings from two exploratory studies reveal the types of information that individuals are most eager to share, as well as the contextual factors and individual characteristics that moderate the desire to share and the circumstances under which this desire is most likely to translate into actual sharing. We replicate findings from prior research that the decision to disclose is a function of content emotionality and valence, but find that the propensity to withhold negative information is most pronounced when the information is about oneself than about others, and that gender differences in disclosure are largely driven by the tendency for men to withhold negative, but not positive, information. Additionally, we capture motives and traits, many of them previously unexplored in the disclosure context, to model the underlying decision-making process that leads to information sharing and distinguish between the act of sharing information and the psychological desire that differentially engender disclosing behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-hundred and twenty-six subjects - 155 females and 71 males - were administered Jourard's Self-disclosure Questionnaire (JSDQ) and Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E Scale). Based on their scores, they were classified into nine groups consisting of combinations of high, medium and low scores on both instruments. Forty-five subjects, five from each of the nine groups, took part in a simulated intake interview. All subjects were interviewed individually by the same interviewer in a permissive atmosphere. It was hypothesized that self-disclosure would correlate with some measure of locus of control. This was confirmed only for males and neither for the entire sample nor for females. The hypothesis that the relationship between level of self-disclosure and locus of control would differ for males and females was also confirmed. Two interpretations were offered to explain the results. The hypothesized relationship between self-disclosure in the interview and JSDQ scores was partly confirmed. However, the JSDQ was presented as not being a very reliable predictor of intimacy of interview disclosure and definitely no predictor of both amount and duration of disclosure. The parameters of interview disclosure and the subject's perception of the interview interaction were not related to the locus of control. The hypothesized relationship between the subject's perception of the interview interaction and JSDQ was confirmed for only one of the three factors. Suggestions were made for studying both self-disclosure and locus of control as expectancy variables.

Book excerpt: We construct a new, parsimonious, measure of disclosure quality -- disaggregation quality (DQ) -- and offer validation tests. DQ captures the level of disaggregation of accounting data through a count of nonmissing Compustat line items, and reflects the extent of details in firms' annual reports. Conceptually, DQ differs from existing disclosure measures in that it captures the “fineness” of data and is based on a comprehensive set of accounting line items in annual reports. Unlike existing measures, which are usually applicable for a subset of firms or are based on a subset of information items, DQ can be generated for the universe of Compustat industrial firms. We conduct three sets of validation tests by examining DQ's association with variables predicted by prior literature to be associated with information quality. DQ is negatively (positively) associated with analyst forecast dispersion (accuracy) and negatively associated with bid-ask spreads and cost of equity. These associations continue to hold after we control for firm fundamentals. Taken together, results from this battery of validation tests are consistent with our measure capturing disclosure quality.

Book excerpt: The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), for disabled individuals, and their dependent family members, who have worked and contributed to the Social Security trust funds, and Supplemental Security Income (SSSI), which is a means-tested program based on income and financial assets for adults aged 65 years or older and disabled adults and children. Both programs require that claimants have a disability and meet specific medical criteria in order to qualify for benefits. SSA establishes the presence of a medically-determined impairment in individuals with mental disorders other than intellectual disability through the use of standard diagnostic criteria, which include symptoms and signs. These impairments are established largely on reports of signs and symptoms of impairment and functional limitation. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination considers the use of psychological tests in evaluating disability claims submitted to the SSA. This report critically reviews selected psychological tests, including symptom validity tests, that could contribute to SSA disability determinations. The report discusses the possible uses of such tests and their contribution to disability determinations. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination discusses testing norms, qualifications for administration of tests, administration of tests, and reporting results. The recommendations of this report will help SSA improve the consistency and accuracy of disability determination in certain cases.
