Book excerpt: The primary goal of this study was to find the effects on the fretting fatigue life when systematically holding the fretting fatigue variables, peak contact pressure, maximum/minimum nominal bulk stress, and the ratio of shear traction to pressure force constant while varying the contact semi-width through changes in pad radius and normal load. Experimental tests were performed on a test setup capable of independent pad displacement. Analytical and finite element simulations of the different experimental tests were performed. The local mechanistic parameters were inspected. Five different critical plane based fatigue predictive parameters lacked effectiveness in predicting changes in life with changes in contact width. The Ruiz parameter, and a modified version of the Ruiz parameter performed better than the five critical plane based parameters. Correlations between slip amplitude and fretting fatigue life were found. Tests experiencing infinite fatigue life, in contrast to the typical shortened fretting fatigue life, were experiencing the gross slip condition, which led to fretting wear instead of fretting fatigue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failures of many mechanical components in service result from fatigue. The cracks which grow may either originate from some pre-existing macroscopic defect, or, if the component is of high integrity but highly stressed, a region of localized stress concentration. In turn, such concentrators may be caused by some minute defect, such as a tiny inclusion, or inadvertent machining damage. Another source of surface damage which may exist between notionally 'bonded' components is associated with minute relative motion along the interface, brought about usually be cyclic tangential loading. Such fretting damage is quite insidious, and may lead to many kinds of problems such as wear, but it is its influence on the promotion of embryo cracks with which we are concerned here. When the presence of fretting is associated with decreased fatigue performance the effect is known as fretting fatigue. Fretting fatigue is a subject drawing equally on materials science and applied mechanics, but it is the intention in this book to concentrate attention entirely on the latter aspects, in a search for the quantification of the influence of fretting on both crack nucleation and propagation. There have been very few previous texts in this area, and the present volume seeks to cover five principal areas; (a) The modelling of contact problems including partial slip under tangentialloading, which produces the surface damage. (b) The modelling of short cracks by rigorous methods which deal effectively with steep stress gradients, kinking and closure. (c) The experimental simulation of fretting fatigue.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fretting fatigue experiments conducted on 304 stainless steel using a flexural-fatigue test arrangement with bolted-on fretting pads have demonstrated that fatigue life is reduced by at least a factor of 10 in the 265- to 334-MPa (38,500- to 48,500-psi) nominal-flexural-fatigue-stress range. In addition, experiments in which the fretting pads were removed after selected numbers of cycles, followed by continued flexural fatigue without fretting show that continued fretting beyond 50,000 cycles does not significantly further reduce fatigue life of 304 stainless steel at 317 MPa (46,000 psi). Microscopic examination of the fretted contact areas revealed fracture initiation sites as well as numerous cracks that did not propagate to failure. Flexural fretting fatigue experiments performed on mild steel showed an insensitivity of fatigue life to the incidence of fretting under flexural stress conditions of from 162 to 217 MPa (23,500 to 31,500 psi).

This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of a variable contact load on the high cycle fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6AL-4V were investigated. Experimental tests were performed using a new test setup capable of applying a contact load varying in amplitude, frequency, and phase and independently measuring shear forces on opposite sides of a specimen. Finite element analysis (FEA) of experimental and idealized loading conditions was performed and local mechanistic parameters and the Modified Shear Stress Range (MSSR) fatigue parameter were determined. Correlations between contact width, slip amplitude, fatigue life and a variable contact load were established with variable contact loading shown to have a damaging effect. Predicted values of crack location and orientation using the MSSR parameter were verified experimentally. The MSSR parameter unsuccessfully predicted fatigue life for variable contact loads. A new formulation of the MSSR parameter is proposed.

Book excerpt: Fretting damage that consists of cracking or wear generated by debris formation is induced by very small alternated displacements between contacting surfaces. This paper focuses on the quantification of the fretting crack nucleation. Fretting experimental results obtained with a well defined quenched aeronautical steel are analyzed by means of a multiaxial fatigue approach. The plane/sphere configuration was studied under partial slip situations. Validated for classical fatigue conditions, the Dang Van's fatigue prediction is compared to fretting cracking mechanisms. The correlation is achieved according to some conditions : - The friction coefficient operating in the annular partial slip contact has to be identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of mechanical structures with predictable and improved durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading researchers in the field, this book, along with the complementary books Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Fundamentals and Application to Damage and Design (both also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. This book deals with multiaxial fatigue, thermomechanical fatigue, fretting-fatigue, influence of defects on fatigue life, cumulative damage and damage tolerance, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of materials science and engineering, mechanical, nuclear and aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanical distinctions between fretting damage under axial or bending external forces and fretting damage under a torsional load. It emphasizes the importance of studying practical accident cases to efficiently acquire technical skills. The book is structured around the fundamental technologies of material science, tribology, and mechanics, which are vital for understanding and addressing technical issues. The author has incorporated all fretting countermeasure technologies, which were previously often sensory and empirical in nature, and repositioned them as technologies grounded in fundamental principles. The book proposes an economical approach to product operation that maintains reliability by integrating not only design technology but also maintenance practices. It delves into specific materials, such as titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, which have seen increased use for weight reduction in industries like aerospace. In this book, “Critical Distance Stress Theory” that can easily derive the fatigue limit and fatigue life of the stress singular field at the contact edge was presented. As a result, the fretting fatigue strength and life can be predicted from the same FEM stress analysis as the normal stress concentration part. And finally, introducing a novel fretting mechanical model, the book focuses on scenarios where pressure force (N) and repeated tangential force (F) are applied to two planar objects, with the tangential force being transmitted solely through friction at the contact surface. This model finds relevance in turbine blade connection structures, among other applications. The author references Asai's research example, which encompasses fretting mechanical analysis, fretting wear evaluation, fatigue assessment, and structural damping evaluation using this model.
