Book Synopsis Possession, Ecstasy, and Law in Ewe Voodoo by : Judy Rosenthal
Download or read book Possession, Ecstasy, and Law in Ewe Voodoo written by Judy Rosenthal and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a new resident of Togo in 1985, Judy Rosenthal witnessed her first Gorovodu trance ritual. Over the next eleven years, she studied this voodoo in West Africa's Ewe populations of coastal Ghana, Togo, and Benin, an area once called the Slave Coast. The result is Possession, Ecstasy, and Law in Ewe Voodoo, an ethnography of spirit possession that focuses on law and morality in "medecine Vodu" orders. Gorovodu is not a doctrinal set, but rather a lingusitic, moral, and spiritual community, with both real and imagined aspects. In medecine Vodu possession, the deities evoked are spirits of "bought people" from the savanna regions, slaves who worked for southern coastal lineages, often marrying into Ewe families. Drumming and dancing rituals, replete with voluptuous trances and gender reversals, bring these "foreign" spirits back into Ewe communities to protect worshippers, heal the sick and troubled, arbitrate disputes, and enjoy themselves as they did before they died. (Rosenthal employs Bakhtin's theory of carnival to interpret the openly festive element of Gorovodu.) The changeable nature of the religion echoes the lack of boundaries of the Gorovodu family and the residents' belief that communal and individual identity are fluid rather than fixed. Numerous name changes early in this century indicated a strategy for resisting colonial control. Writing from a background of anthropology, Rosenthal carefully monitors her own role as narrator in the book, aware of the cultural distance between her and the Africans she is writing about. She intends this ethnography to mirror the "texts" of voodoo itself, a body of signifiers and meanings with which the reader must interact in order to make sense of it.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is on the law relating to the family, property and succession among the Northern Ewe-speaking people of Ghana. The first Chapter offers a general description of the Ewe in both Ghana and Togo and proceeds to identify the section referred to as the Northern Ewe-speaking people of Ghana. In the second Chapter the political structure is described, showing the area as a congeries of small autonomous chiefdoms, each with its own system of law. In Chapter III the nature of the Ewe family, which is patrilineal, is examined as the unit for purposes of citizenship, succession to hereditary offices, entitlement to ancestral property and assumption of certain obligations. The position of the head of family is considered in Chapter IV where it is submitted that succession to the office is automatic and the holder of the office is accountable but generally irremovable. Chapters V and VI concern interests in land. It is shown that as a rule the respective families hold the paramount title to land, with the dependent interest in the members of the family, and that stool lands as generally understood in Ghana are practically non-existent among the Northern Ewe. In Chapter VII it is explained that, apart from the ancestral family lands, family property is rare among the Northern Ewe. Alienation of interests in property by sale, gift, pledging and tenancy is discussed in Chapters VIII - XII, stating the formalities and the effect of each type of alienation. The law of succession to interests in property is discussed in Chapter XIII. It is shown that succession is not by the family but by individuals as of right and that the interest of a successor is generally that of a purchaser, so that the interest is both alienable and inheritable.

Book Synopsis LAW, CUSTOM AND PROPERTY RIGHTS AMONG THE ?MA/NYIMA? OF THE NUBA MOUNTAINS IN THE SUDAN by : Hunud Abia Kadouf

This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an extensive field work in which the author tried to study the customary law of property of an African agrarian tribal community of Āma - also known as Nyimaŋ - of the Nuba Mountains in the northern Sudan. The writer has tried to explain the nature of property holding in the light of the people's philosophy evidenced in their social structure and their traditional beliefs. Special attention is paid to the traditional structure of political leadership in this highly segmented society that was prone not only to inter-tribal wars but was also in a constant 'fission and fusion' among themselves when not at war with other neighboring tribes. In discussing jurisdictional issues, and traditional settlement mechanisms based partly on law and custom, both adopted by this egalitarian society, the study is made currently relevant by keen observation on the effect of modernity on traditional ethics and morality of the Āma society that was once described by some authors as being 'impervious to foreign influence". Furthermore, the reception and assimilation of the state law together with the Shari'ah laws in various areas such as that relating to property devolution, family institution, and burial rites is treated as being of great significance in the overall development of the tribal customary laws. Like any other Nuba tribe, the consciousness of the Āma people of their ethos of identity marks their ferociously guarded customs and traditions prevalent up-to-date. The book is not only a precious academic endeavor full of keen observations, in depth study and analysis of tribal customary laws of property; but is also a memoir for the author to commemorate formidable tribal group of the Āma people in the Nuba Mountains of the Sudan.
