Book Synopsis Gravity Field, Seismicity and Tectonics of the Indian Peninsula and the Himalayas by : R.K. Verma
Download or read book Gravity Field, Seismicity and Tectonics of the Indian Peninsula and the Himalayas written by R.K. Verma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in Science and Technology have removed the boundaries betwe~n the so-called 'fundamental' and 'applied' fields of research. This has been particularly evident in the rapidly expanding geophysical sciences with their far reaching applications. Fundamental geophysical studies of surface, subsurface and crustal structures where gravity investigations play an important role, are of immediate potential importance in defining major structural features or geological units which may control or influence the development of metallogenic provinces, petroleum potential areas or coal fields. Gravity studies in India have a long history and tradition. The earliest gravity measurements were made with two brass pendulums loaned by the Royal Society of England, when Basevi and Heaviside established 30 gravity pendulum stations between Cape Comorin and Ladakh during 1865 to 1873. Over the subsequent years, large areas of the country have been systematically covered through gravimeters and a number of regional and detailed studies have been undertaken by various agencies like Survey of India, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and a number of universities. Assistance was provided by late Prof. G. P. Woollard and his former students Muckenfuss, Bonini, Shankaranarayan and Murali Manghnani, who have connected India to the international gravity net work. Gravity studies carried out by the Survey of India have been of great value in geodetic studies.
Book Synopsis Bouguer Gravity Regional and Residual Separation by : K. Mallick
Download or read book Bouguer Gravity Regional and Residual Separation written by K. Mallick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of regional-residual separation in potential field is age-old. Broadly, there are two techniques for regional-residual resolution, viz., graphical and analytical. Both the techniques have their own respective shortcomings. In this book, the authors have described the technique based on finite element method in which only eight (or twelve) nodal observed gravity values are used for the regional computation, thereby eliminating the possible contamination of anomalous fields and also the technique does not assume an explicit model and physical properties like density of rocks etc. in the regional computation. The book discusses the advantages of this technique viz., it is not site-specific; the computation is independent of any prior assumptions as to the form and depth of shallow or deeper structures; it can handle data distributed at random or on a regular grid on the map space; and the neighbouring surveys join smoothly. The book focuses on application of this new technique which has been demonstrated in different fields, such as hydrocarbon, minerals and groundwater, structural studies, earthquake and engineering studies and impact structures.

Download or read book Indian Shield written by A.B. Roy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Shield: Precambrian Evolution and Phanerozoic Reconstitution highlights unique evolutionary trends covering a period of over 3,500 million years, from the oldest crust to the most recent geological activity of the Indian Subcontinent. The book discusses regional terrain geology in terms of the evolutionary history of the crust, describing how the Precambrian Shield evolved from a stable continental region to a tectonically unstable zone marked by frequent high-intensity earthquakes in a Plate-interior setting. It is a complete and readable account of the history of growth and evolution of the Indian Subcontinent, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and teachers in the geosciences, especially geophysics, geomorphology and geology. The book also serves as an important resource for tectonics and petrology researchers, as well as those involved in exploration of mineral resources. - Features comprehensive geological information on the evolution of the Indian Subcontinent, from the growth of early crust to the present day in a single volume - Discusses different processes of post-Precambrian reconstitution of the Indian Shield that ultimately produced the present-day geomorphology as well as the tectonic character of the region - Assesses the impacts and effects of the ongoing post-Himalayan tectonism on the Indian Subcontinent

Download or read book Geomagnetism written by Nathani Basavaiah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the awareness that the Earth has a magnetic field, its mathematical description, discovery of remanent magnetisation in rocks and discovery of the periodic reversals of the geomagnetic field polarity, geomagnetism within geophysics became an interesting field of study. This is primarily due to advances in measurement technology and improved understanding of the magnetic field and its fluctuations in the geospace. Several important aspects of solid Earth geomagnetism are elaborated in the book. The first six chapters cover the basics of magnetism, magnetic minerals, biomagnetics, instrumentation and the behavior of geomagnetic field, while the rest of the book is devoted to practical applications with carefully selected examples and illustrations. Well-written and easy to read, the book vividly describes modern techniques in the subject matter covered, adequately supported by graphical explanations for complex mathematical concepts.

Book Synopsis DISASTER MITIGATION by : PARDEEP SAHNI
Download or read book DISASTER MITIGATION written by PARDEEP SAHNI and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human vulnerability to natural disasters is an age-old phenomenon. Besides nature~s wrath, human interventions, too, have led to many calamities in the recent past. The heedless pace of development has left us ecologically barren. Most of the world~s people live in ~developing~ economies, as do most of the world~s poor. They also face the most debilitating consequences in the form of economic and social disruption caused by disasters. The long history of disasters and their intensity has brought the question of disaster management to the forefront. Disaster mitigation is a major component of a disaster management plan. Mitigation entails measures to reduce the physical, economic and social vulnerability of a community to disasters. Disaster management is still an untouched domain, suffering for want of systematic and committed research and development inputs. It is essential not only to consolidate its academic stature but also to infuse the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes in the personnel connected with this field. This collection of articles from several contributors is an excellent analysis of different mitigation strategies. It offers insight into the different dimensions of disaster preparedness and mitigation. The underlying attempt in each chapter is to illuminate the pertinence of those mitigation efforts that would prepare everyone related with disaster management to comprehend and approach the problem more holistically. Besides government agencies, NGOs, and community-based bodies, the book is suitable for students pursuing the certificate programme in Disaster Management developed by the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
