Book Synopsis Signaling and Communication in Plant Symbiosis by : Silvia Perotto
Download or read book Signaling and Communication in Plant Symbiosis written by Silvia Perotto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multiplicity of biotrophic micro-organisms interact with plants in nature, forming symbiotic relationships that range from mutualism to antagonism. Microorganisms that have adopted biotrophy as a lifestyle are able to colonize the plant and often to cross the plant cell boundaries by forming intracellular structures that are the site of nutrient uptake/exchange. To establish themselves within plant tissues, both mutualistic and pathogenic biotrophs need to overcome the plant defense response through an exchange of molecular signals. Our knowledge of the nature of these signals and their function in the interaction has rapidly increased over the last few years. This volume focuses on the genetic, molecular and cellular components involved in the communication between partners of well-known symbioses, but also reports on the advances for less studied systems.

Written by leading experts in the field, it provides an updated definition of mycorrhizal types and establishes the best practices of modern biogeographic analyses. Individual chapters address the basic processes and mechanisms driving community ecology, population biology and dispersal in mycorrhizal fungi, which differ greatly from these of prokaryotes, plants and animals. Other chapters review the state-of-the-art knowledge about the distribution, ecology and biogeography of all mycorrhizal types and the most important fungal groups involved in mycorrhizal symbiosis. The book argues that molecular methods have revolutionized our understanding of the ecology and biogeography of mycorrhizal symbiosis and that rapidly evolving high-throughput identification and genomics tools will provide unprecedented information about the structure and functioning of mycorrhizal symbiosis on a global scale. This volume appeals to scientists in the fields of plant and fungal ecology and biogeography.
Book Synopsis Plant Microbe Symbiosis by : Ajit Varma
Download or read book Plant Microbe Symbiosis written by Ajit Varma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the latest advances concerning symbiotic relationships between plants and microbes, and their applications in plant productivity and agricultural sustainability. Symbiosis is a living phenomenon including dynamic variations in the genome, metabolism and signaling network, and adopting a multidirectional perspective on their interactions is required when studying symbiotic organisms. Although various plant-microbe symbiotic systems are covered in this book, it especially focuses on arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) symbiosis and root nodule symbiosis, the two most prevalent systems. AM symbiosis involves the most extensive interaction between plants and microbes, in the context of phylogeny and ecology. As more than 90% of all known species of plants have the potential to form mycorrhizal associations, the productivity and species composition, as well as the diversity of natural ecosystems, are frequently dependent upon the presence and activity of mycorrhizas. In turn, root nodule symbiosis includes morphogenesis and is formed by communication between plants and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The biotechnological application of plant–microbe symbiosis is expected to foster the production of agricultural and horticultural products while maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable production systems. Designed as a hands-on guide, this book offers an essential resource for researchers and students in the areas of agri-biotechnology, soil biology and fungal biology.

Book Synopsis Evolution of Membrane Signaling and Trafficking in Plants by : Markus Geisler
Download or read book Evolution of Membrane Signaling and Trafficking in Plants written by Markus Geisler and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Membrane proteins are essential determinants of many biological processes in plants. They function in metabolic processes, signal transduction, transport of small molecules and polymers across endo- and plasma membranes, and intercompartmental trafficking of proteins, lipids, and cell wall components. During these integrative processes, dynamic interactions of membrane proteins with other membrane or soluble components are thought to provide a high degree of flexibility that usually characterizes higher plants. This concept is supported by the recent release of a first, partial Arabidopsis interactome by the Arabidopsis Interactome Mapping Consortium (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/333/6042/601.full.htm). The Arabidopsis interactome reveals a strong enrichment of a few network communities, including those for transmembrane transport and vesicle trafficking. Strikingly, the large transmembrane transport community shares a high amount of proteins with the vesicle trafficking community suggesting a strong physical and functional overlap and interaction.
Book Synopsis Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation by : P. Graham
Download or read book Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation written by P. Graham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past three decades there has been a large amount of research on biological nitrogen fixation, in part stimulated by increasing world prices of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and environmental concerns. In the last several years, research on plant--microbe interactions, and symbiotic and asymbiotic nitrogen fixation has become truly interdisciplinary in nature, stimulated to some degree by the use of modern genetic techniques. These methodologies have allowed us to make detailed analyses of plant and bacterial genes involved in symbiotic processes and to follow the growth and persistence of the root-nodule bacteria and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soils. Through the efforts of a large number of researchers we now have a better understanding of the ecology of rhizobia, environmental parameters affecting the infection and nodulation process, the nature of specificity, the biochemistry of host plants and microsymbionts, and chemical signalling between symbiotic partners. This volume gives a summary of current research efforts and knowledge in the field of biological nitrogen fixation. Since the research field is diverse in nature, this book presents a collection of papers in the major research area of physiology and metabolism, genetics, evolution, taxonomy, ecology, and international programs.

Book Synopsis Cyanobacteria in Symbiosis by : A.N. Rai
Download or read book Cyanobacteria in Symbiosis written by A.N. Rai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacterial symbioses are no longer regarded as mere oddities but as important components of the biosphere, occurring both in terrestrial and aquatic habitats worldwide. It is becoming apparent that they can enter into symbiosis with a wider variety of organisms than hitherto known, and there are many more still to be discovered, particularly in marine environments. The chapters cover cyanobacterial symbioses with plants (algae, bryophytes, Azolla, cycads, Gunnera), cyanobacterial symbioses in marine environments, lichens, Nostoc-Geosiphon (a fungus closely related to arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi) symbiosis, and artificial associations of cyanobacteria with economically important plants. In addition, cyanobiont diversity, sensing-signalling, and evolutionary aspects of the symbiosis are dealt with. Renowned experts actively involved in research on cyanobacterial symbioses deal with ecological, physiological, biochemical, molecular, and applied aspects of all known cyanobacterial symbioses. This volume on cyanobacteria in symbiosis complements the two earlier volumes on cyanobacteria published by Kluwer (Molecular Biology of Cyanobacteria, edited by D.A. Bryant and Ecology of Cyanobacteria, edited by B.A. Whitton and M. Potts). Together, the three volumes provide the most comprehensive treatment of cyanobacterial literature as a whole. The book will serve as a valuable reference work and text for teaching and research in the field of plant-microbe interactions and nitrogen fixation.
Book Synopsis Cell to Cell Signals in Plant, Animal and Microbial Symbiosis by : Silvano Scannerini
Download or read book Cell to Cell Signals in Plant, Animal and Microbial Symbiosis written by Silvano Scannerini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In symbiosis, different organisms have to recognize each other and exchange material and information. While the functional morphology of symbiont cells has extensively been studied little attention has been paid to mutual interactions and cell-to-cell signals. The main topic of the book is the comparison and discussion of the short-distance signals triggering mutualism in animal and plant cells. Thus it provides a) the basis for a better understanding of various aspects of cell compatibility; b) standardisation of a common vocabulary for animal and plant symbiotic biology; c) optimization of experimental techniques for studying signals in symbiosis. The results show the differences and the general principles in the signalling processes of plant, animal and bacterial cells.

Book Synopsis Plant Communication from an Ecological Perspective by : František Baluška
Download or read book Plant Communication from an Ecological Perspective written by František Baluška and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the concept of allelopathy was introduced almost 100 years ago, research has led to an understanding that plants are involved in complex communicative interactions. They use a battery of different signals that convey plant-relevant information within plant individuals as well as between plants of the same species or different species. The 13 chapters of this volume discuss all these topics from an ecological perspective. Communication between plants allows them to share physiological and ecological information relevant for their survival and ?tness. It is obvious that in these very early days of ecological plant communication research we are illuminating only the ‘tip of iceberg’ of the communicative nature of higher plants. Nevertheless, knowledge on the identity and informative value of volatiles used by plants for communication is increasing with breath-taking speed. Among the most spectacular examples are sit- tions where plant emitters warn neighbours about a danger, increasing their innate immunity, or when herbivore-attacked plants attract the enemies of the herbivores (‘cry for help’ and ‘plant bodyguards’ concepts). It is becoming obvious that plants use not only volatile signals but also diverse water soluble molecules, in the case of plant roots, to safeguard their evolutionary success and accomplish self/non-self kin rec- nition. Importantly, as with all the examples of biocommunication, irrespective of whether signals and signs are transmitted via physical or chemical pathways, plant communication is a rule-governed and sign-mediated process.
