Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a few books dealing with some specialised aspects of regional planning have appeared in India, there has been no systematic treatment of the subject from the teaching angle, embracing the whole field of regional planning, drawing attention to to the work done by Indian scholars and focusing on Indian problems. The present book is an attempt in this direction. The 12 chapters of the book, besides dealing with the concepts, methods and techniques of regional planning, have been devoted to specific problems in regional development such as regional imbalances, rural development, backward area development and tribal area development. This provides the necessary orientation to the directions in which regional planning is relevant.

Book Synopsis Development Economics by : The late Yujiro Hayami
Download or read book Development Economics written by The late Yujiro Hayami and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-02-03 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive, systematic treatise on development economics, combining classical political economy, modern institutional theory, and current development issues. Grown out of twenty years' experience of teaching in the United States and Japan, its treatment is global, although the organizing principle is the East Asian development experience. Taking a comparative institutional analysis approach, it also outlines quantitative characteristics of Third World development in terms of population growth, natural resource depletion, capital accumulation, and technological change. Development Economics addresses one major question: Why has a small set of countries achieved a high level of affluence while the majority remain poor and stagnant? One obvious factor is a the ability to adopt and develop advanced technology, due in large measure to the difficulty experienced by low-income economies in preparing appropriate institutions for borrowing advanced technology given their social and cultural constraints. This volume explores the nature of these constraints, with the aim of identifying the means to remove them, and examines countries where the constraints have been successfully lifted—-most notably Japan and East Asian NIEs. This fully revised and updated third edition also incorporates analyses of several recent changes and newly emerged problems relevant to the global economy: recurrent economic crises in Latin America contrasted with the recovery of East Asia from the 1997-8 financial crisis; a paradigm change in international development assistance from 'the Washington Consensus' to the 'the Post-Washington Consensus', with a major shift in its focus from economic growth to poverty reduction as manifested in the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals; and the stalemate in international collaboration on the environment as represented by delays in the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. In exploring these issues, Development Economics provides important lessons on what institutions can promote economic growth, reduce poverty, and conserve the environment through the borrowing of technology.

Written with clarity, this book is a unique attempt to analyze, in considerable depth, various facets of socioeconomic growth such as natural resources, population, agriculture, industry, transport and energy. Besides, the issues like economic planning, land and tenancy reforms, economic reforms, inflation, banking structure, international trade and finance, labour policy, industrial monetary system, science and technology, and the atrophies ailing the economy have also been probed. In a nutshell the book skilfully interprets the economy of today’s India to identify her role not only in the development of its own economy but also in relation to the rest of the world. It also identifies the issues, problems and programmes required for the formulation of a strategy for economic growth. In addition, it can be of immense help to students appearing in civil services and allied examinations. This brilliant exposition of the Indian economy will also be useful as an important source of reference for scholars, faculty members, administrators, and policymakers.

Book excerpt: This volume discusses key aspects of the economics of the elementary education system in the poorer and educationally backward states of India, while also examining one high-achiever state--Tamil Nadu. The survey covered 120,000 households and a thousand schools spread over 91 districts in eight states.Written by leading educational economists, the original essays in this volume- analyse the major cost and financing issues in elementary schooling in seven of the eight states surveyed--Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal;- identify recent initiatives made by the governments of these seven states;- systematically scrutinise the pattern of the public spending in elementary education;- examine enrolment in government schools and the quality of education that they impart;- study household expenditure on schooling--the costs to parents of sending children to school; and- compare government schools with private schools, showing how the private sector has began to take over the what should be the responsibility of the government, particularly in the poorer states.
