Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Modern ThoughtLike all great movements of the human spirit, Christianity also shares this inborn confidence in its authorized standard, thought to be handed down from above. This excuse in defense of Christian religion has ever firmly knit together this confidence by the blank unmeditated opposition of Christianity to all that is non-christian, depreciating the latter to a homogeneous mass of human error, and vice, ex alting the former to immediate divine dignity, accredited as such by outer and inner miracle, as will be shown in this book. The old position held by all Christians in all ages, is that all ecclesiastical history presents absolute truth, proved to be such, because miraculously authenticated to be due to divine communication.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path of Evolution Through Ancient Thought and Modern Science The sketch here given of the evolution of knowl edge and the doctrine of the evolution of life is the efl'ort to place in a connected historical relation the questions discussed and partly answered in my home. To those who are versed in the several sciences touched upon the treatment thereof may seem to be too super ficial, dealing mainly with the beginnings of principles and teachings that even a child might know. But it is the beginnings of things that are often least well known. The questions that a child might ask the wisest man can scarcely answer. On the other hand, the problems of the Ether and of Gravitation are yet unsolved, and by many men are thought to be in solvable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the War The way in which the distinction between men and animals is glossed over by the two fashionable schools of modern thought, and the misleading fashion in which observations on inheritance in plants and animals have been extended to human qualities, I have criticized in many occasional articles. The attempt towards a theory of consciousness which I sketch in this book is foreshadowed in my book on The Childhood of Animals, published in and in an address on Science and Life, published early in 1914. The answer is two-fold - general and personal. First, the world of general readers is captivated, dazzled and perplexed by the new philosophy, and greatly needs some clear and intelligible exposition of its nature and tendency, some classification of its variations, and some attempt to explain its agreement or discordance with science and religion. Secondly, the writer of the following pages has of late years been besieged by so many letters and 1nqu1r1es respecting this subject, to which he has incidentally referred in popular books on science, that it becomes necessary in self-defence and to save time to prepare an answer which may meet all demands of this kind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Evolution IN presenting the following pages to the public, the author wishes it to be understood that he does not expect to convert any to a belief in evolution. He addresses those who accept the doctrine in some form or other as established, although he has endeavoured, as concisely as possible, to present the reader with the reasons for accepting it. Those who remain un convinced by the elaborate works of Darwin, Spencer, and others will probably not accept the views enunci ated in these pages, which, however, it is hoped, will not be unacceptable to many who wish to reconcile the theory of evolution with the highest aims of human thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Theory of Evolution: Evolution and Genetics I wish to acknowledge the inspiration of Dr. Dwight E. Minnich, who first encouraged me to undertake teaching a Course in evolution, and of the many students whose interest has made this particular course such a pleasure to teach. The comments and suggestions of my colleagues, at the University of Minnesota, James C. Underhill, Joseph G. Gall, John W. Hall, and Frank G. Nordlie, have been most helpful, but I, of course, am solely responsible for the final form of the book. In a work of this sort, covering as it does subjects ranging from the origin of life to cultural anthropology, choices must be made in matters of emphasis and interpretation. It is hoped that the net result is a reasonably balanced account of current thought on evolution. My collaboration with Mrs. Olivia Jensen Ingersoll, whose imaginative drawings illustrate the. Book, of necessity was carried on at long range since her home is in Ohio. However, her competence, both as an illustrator and as a zoologist, greatly eased the problems involved. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the devoted assistance of my wife, Jessie, who assumed the onerous task of typing the manuscript. Book excerpt: Evolution in Modern Thought by William Bateson -In seeking to discover Darwin's relation to his predecessors it is useful to distinguish the various services which he rendered to the theory of organic evolution. - (I) As everyone knows, the general idea of the Doctrine of Descent is that the plants and animals of the present day are the lineal descendants of ancestors on the whole somewhat simpler, that these again are descended from yet simpler forms, and so on backwards towards the literal "Protozoa" and "Protophyta" about which we unfortunately know nothing. Now no one supposes that Darwin originated this idea, which in rudiment at least is as old as Aristotle. What Darwin did was to make it current intellectual coin. He gave it a form that commended itself to the scientific and public intelligence of the day, and he won widespread conviction by showing with consummate skill that it was an effective formula to work with, a key which no lock refused. In a scholarly, critical, and pre-eminently fair-minded way, admitting difficulties and removing them, foreseeing objections and forestalling them, he showed that the doctrine of descent supplied a modal interpretation of how our present-day fauna and flora have come to be. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Spiritual Life Comparatively little detailed consideration is given in the present book to the conclusions of particular schools of philosophy, except where a reference to one system or another has seemed desirable for the purpose of illustrating a definite point. William James justly complains that The abuse of technicality is seen in the infrequency with which, in philosophical literature, metaphysical questions are discussed directly on their own merits. Almost always they are handled, as if through a heavy woollen curtain, the veil of pre vious philosophers' opinions. Alternatives are wrapped in proper names, as if it were indecent for a truth to go naked. I have tried, rather, to work from point to point, handling everything with bare fingers, and only discovering by touch the shape of each lump of fact and its contacts with the next. And the shapes and contacts of some were unexpected. But clothes are ornamental; and these ornaments we have come to consider essential to decency. There fore, both for the sake of our ideas of what is suitable, and to escape arrest by the police who guard our thoughts, I have decked the body of my work with more or less of the usual habiliments 1. No thought is so essential and sublime as that about ourselves. One may be skeptical as to the value of these things, but before any discussion of them is possible, one must, above all, think.
