Book excerpt: "This study goes beyond a formal description and esthetic analysis of house design in Mexico to offer an interpretation based on the complex network of economic, social, and cultural relations. Begins with an analysis of the indigenous home and lifestyle and continues into postrevolutionary, modern, and contemporary periods of historic transition, during which a new conception of urban space developed offering greater possibilities for individual expression. Contains many b/w plates of colonial city plans, 19th-century plans and photographs, and 20th-century photographs up to the 1980s"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors behind the failure of land use planning in Mexico City, as reflected in the concentration of 65% of its population in irregular settlements, are explored in this book. It documents the structural role that the lack of secure property rights of the ejidos, the surrounding peasant communities, played in determining such an outcome within the context of the national economic policy of import-substitution industrialization which favored Mexico City's growth. An original policy proposal, whose significance is broader than the specific case of Mexico City, presents an alternative based on privatization of the ejidos in the urban periphery and the establishment of land development trusteeships for low-income settlements within the framework of an urban land reserve planning system.

Book Synopsis Adjustment, Poverty and Employment in Mexico by : Araceli Damian
Download or read book Adjustment, Poverty and Employment in Mexico written by Araceli Damian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Analyzing the poverty trends in Mexico during the 1980s and early 1990s, this work is concerned with the extent to which changes in the levels of poverty have modified the extent of participation in the labour market. The period covered is 1982 to 1994, when the Mexican economy experienced an economic crisis and the government set in motion the main stabilization policies and structural adjustment reforms. The author challenges the idea that adjustment reforms have had "social costs" in terms of income and formal employment loss. Despite income losses, well-being indicators continued to improve; and employment statistics show that employment grew despite the economic crisis and adjustment. The paradox of household income decline and the increase in income poverty is explained.

Book Synopsis Scaling Urban Environmental Challenges by : Peter J Marcotullio
Download or read book Scaling Urban Environmental Challenges written by Peter J Marcotullio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think globally, act locally emphasizes the importance of scale in dealing with environmental challenges, but not how to factor it in. This major new book focuses on the spatial dimensions of urban environmental burdens, showing how important it is to take these into account when pursuing environmental justice and good governance - whether in the context of the sanitary risks of slum living, the pollution of uncontrolled industrialization and motorization, or the enormous ecological footprints of affluent urban lifestyles. Written by leading experts in the fields of urban development and environmental planning, the book reviews the urban environmental shifts that have shaped todays challenges, and examines conditions and problems in the urban centres of low-, middle- and high-income countries. Case studies address such economically diverse cities as Accra, New Delhi, Mexico City and Manchester, while thematic chapters explore issues including water, sanitation and transportation. The book concludes by exploring and analysing different scales of governance. The editors argue that we should not rely solely on local governance to address local burdens like poor sanitation, nor depend only on global governance for global challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions, but that scale is crucial in both understanding the problems and devising successful responses. Book Synopsis Urban Policy in Latin America by : Michael Cohen
Download or read book Urban Policy in Latin America written by Michael Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the impact of 20 years of urban policies in six Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. It argues that evaluating the fulfillment of past commitments is essential for framing and meeting the new commitments that were taken in Habitat III over the next 20 years. Taken as a whole, the book provides a critical assessment of the economic, social and environmental consequences of urban interventions during Habitat II. The country-level chapters have been written by recognized experts in urban issues, with first-hand knowledge of the Habitat process, and deep familiarity with the problems, statistics, actors and political contexts of their nations. The latter part of the volume considers wider topics such as the Habitat Commitment Index, the New Urban Agenda and the regional and global-scale lessons that can be extracted from this group of countries. Urban Policy in Latin America will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and policymakers across development economics, urban studies and Latin American studies.
