Book Synopsis The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society by : Arjen Y. Hoekstra
Download or read book The Water Footprint of Modern Consumer Society written by Arjen Y. Hoekstra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is not only used in the domestic context, but also in agriculture and industry in the production of commercial goods, from food to paper. The water footprint is an indicator of freshwater use that looks at both direct and indirect use of water by a consumer or producer. The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the individual or community or produced by the business. This book shows how the water footprint concept can be used to quantify and map the water use behind consumption and how it can guide reduction of water use to a sustainable level. With a number of case studies, it illustrates water use along supply chains and that water consumption at one place is often linked to water use at another. For example, it is calculated that it takes 15,000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of beef, or 8,000 litres of water to produce a pair of jeans. The book shows that imports of water-intensive products can highly benefit water-scarce countries, but also that this creates a dependency on foreign water resources. The book demonstrates how water-scarce regions sometimes, nevertheless, use lots of water for making export products. It raises the issue of sustainable consumption: how can consumers, businesses and governments get involved in reducing the water footprints of final consumer goods?

Book Synopsis La Dieta De Marin County by : Albert C Goldberg
Download or read book La Dieta De Marin County written by Albert C Goldberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-27 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains everything a parent needs to know to design an optimal diet for the healthy child from infancy through the teenage years. It addresses the need for a practical nutrition book that contains evidence based information rather than "faith based" reasoning passed off as "science." It addresses the daily nutritional health issues of children in a specific, truthful, and friendly way. In addition to parents, this book will be of special interest to nursery schools, elementary and high school teachers, coaches, all health care providers, family physicians, pediatricians, and nurses who work with children, including pediatric and family nurse practitioners. At the turn of the previous century, malnutritionthe lack of certain nutrients, vitamins and mineralswas a problem second only to infection in this country. Today malnutrition is more likely to be a case of overconsumption of certain nutrients. Too much has replaced too little: too much fat, too much salt, too much sugar, and too much ultra-processed food. The author reveals the solution to the problem of overconsumption in this book, which is peppered throughout with helpful, nutritious recipes, as well as examples of the food labels of many popular products, with notes on what to look out for when reading the packages of your favorite foods. Although most of Dr. Goldberg's suggestions and anecdotes come from his years of nurturing thousands of children (and their parents), he has recruited the experience of many other experts in nutrition. For the past twenty five years the author has worked in countries such as Argentina, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Nepal, Philippines, Peru, Venezuela, and Vietnam, where poverty, ignorance, social disintegration and war have contributed to nutritional diseases, and he has brought back with him a keen understanding of the multi-cultural effects upon diet. In 2001 Doctor Goldberg was selected as one of fifty "Unsung Heroes of Compassion"from around the world and was acknowledged personally by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.

Book Synopsis Health Technology Assessment and Health Policy Today: A Multifaceted View of their Unstable Crossroads by : Juan E. del Llano-Señarís
Download or read book Health Technology Assessment and Health Policy Today: A Multifaceted View of their Unstable Crossroads written by Juan E. del Llano-Señarís and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disentangles the issues in connection with the advancement of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and its interface with health policy. It highlights the factors that should shape its progress in the near future. Interdisciplinary and critical views from a number of professionals are put together in a prescient order to cast some light and make recommendations as to the next steps HTA should take to be fit for purpose. A wealth of documents dealing with HTA have been published over the last three decades. HTA allegedly is one of the bedrocks of regulation and medical decision making. However, counter vailing visions contend that geographical variations in the role that HTA is actually playing within countries pinpoints specific room for improvement. Given our social preferences, cherry-picking HTA’s features and successes over the last decades moves it away from its possibility frontier. Some of the most noteworthy hindrances that HTA faces, in several countries, to making headway towards its consolidation as an efficient tool for regulation and decision making are as follows: insufficient resources, delays in assessment, inadequate priority setting, regulatory capture, public distrust, actual influence on regulatory decisions, the need for strengthening international cooperation and harmony, the lack of sound and consistent assessments of diagnostic tests, medical devices and surgical innovations and limited dissemination. Time has come for HTA to take a renewed stand. There is a pressing need to submit HTA to in-depth critical scrutiny.
