Book excerpt: Ali Reynolds is mad as hell and she isn't going to take it anymore! Fired from her glamorous high profile LA anchorwoman job, Ali's returned to her hometown of Sedona, Arizona to lick her wounds, shedding her old life and her old husband (the 'cheating rat') in the process. She's started a blog to help vent her feelings of betrayal: cutlooseblog.com. But the day before their final decree nisi, Ali's estranged husband is found dead in Palm Springs - having been trussed up in the boot of a car and left on the railway tracks to be pulverized by an oncoming freight train - leaving behind him a rich estate and a pregnant fiancee. Not only is Ali the sole heir to her soon-to-be-ex-husband's estate, she's also the prime suspect in his murder. Soon she's heading down a path strewn with corpses and danger alike. But little does Ali realize the extraordinary part her blog will play in tracking down the real culprit.

Book excerpt: 38413 The shock of entry into World War II proved to be energizing to the nation and to us as a people. Rather than the grand actions that historians would have us believe is the story of war, these stories are human stories, stories of the men who put their life on the line out of a sense of duty, of responsibility, of patriotism, of loyalty to comrades. Mostly though, their choices came about because they were in situations that gave them the choice of doing what was needed, of dying, of redemption or for some battlefield situations, of escaping into insanity. Within the civilian population something can be seen of their effort and their sacrifice that produced the goods of war that made winning possible. Not thinking of themselves as heroic or unusual, their stories, for the most part, were unknown to the families of the individuals telling them. I have been fortunate that within family and friends I have uncovered the previously untold stories of civilian as well as soldiers that provide a broad picture of involvement in a spectrum of actions during that period of time identified as WW II. These stories range from the commonly accepted stories of battles and battlefield action to the story of a young woman living through the occupation of Holland and resulting starvation as well as that of her cousin who spent the war in Germany as a labor prisoner, where he endured with the German people the massive bombings that killed at least 12,000 people in the city of Frankfurt. Much of the military action described is of campaigns in the Pacific Theater where I spent 22 months in a non-combat role. Twin brothers were also there and engaged in six major campaigns beginning with Tarawa, Saipan, Guam, and Okinawa to provide an unforgettable picture of ground war action. One friend was living in Honolulu during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Another friend was involved in the Normandy attack, a cousin was badly wounded in a B-17 attack on Germany and another friend was involved in the final drive on Germany. On the civilian front we see female involvement in war production as well as the strain of caring for family under the burdens of wartime privation and lack of male support while often dealing with the threat of family loss. To help celebrate the end of th

Book excerpt: "I am delighted to offer my highest praise to Dean Cocking and Jeroen van den Hoven's brilliant new book, Evil Online. The confrontation between good and evil occupies a central place in the challenges facing our human nature, and this creative investigation into the spread of evil by means of all-powerful new technologies raises fundamental questions about our morality and values. Cocking and Van den Hoven's account of the moral fog of evil forces us to face both the demons within each of us as well as the demons all around us. In the end, we are all enriched by their perceptive analyses." —Phil Zimbardo, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Stanford University Principal Investigator, Stanford Prison Experiment "The internet offers new and deeply concerning opportunities for immorality, much of it shocking and extreme. This volume explains with great insight and clarity the corrupting nature of the internet and the moral confusion it has produced. It will play a vital role in the growing debate about how to balance the benefits of the internet against the risks it poses to all of us. Evil Online is an excellent book." —Roger Crisp, Professor of Moral Philosophy, University of Oxford We now live in an era defined by the ubiquity of the internet. From our everyday engagement with social media to trolls on forums and the emergence of the dark web, the internet is a space characterized by unreality, isolation, anonymity, objectification, and rampant self-obsession—the perfect breeding ground for new, unprecedented manifestations of evil. Evil Online is the first comprehensive analysis of evil and moral character in relation to our increasingly online lives. Chapters consider traditional ideas around the phenomenon of evil in moral philosophy and explore how the dawn of the internet has presented unprecedented challenges to older theoretical approaches. Cocking and Van den Hoven propose that a growing sense of moral confusion—moral fog—pushes otherwise ordinary, normal people toward evildoing, and that values basic to moral life such as autonomy, intimacy, trust, and privacy are put at risk by online platforms and new technologies. This new theory of evildoing offers fresh insight into the moral character of the individual, and opens the way for a burgeoning new area of social thought. A comprehensive analysis of an emerging and disturbing social phenomenon, Evil Online examines the morally troubling aspects of the internet in our society. Written not only for academics in the fields of philosophy, psychology, information science, and social science, Evil Online is accessible and compelling reading for anyone interested in understanding the emergence of evil in our digitally-dominated world.

Carrying the severed head of a dead demon out of a cave?" There was a brief pause. "Yes, Harvey. Of course I would mind." With that she was gone. This was not the day Harvey had expected. It started pretty well: pleasant company; an easy climb to the top of the butte; some down time practicing his magic. He even ran into some old friends. Then came the damsels in distress. And the killing. And the demons. The hunter was dead now, and Harvey was left with questions... and an evil orb. He would find his answers at the top of the mountain. Tomorrow would be another day - another day of monsters and demons.

Book excerpt: How to make customers feel good about doing what you want Learn how companies make us feel good about doing what they want. Approaching persuasive design from the dark side, this book melds psychology, marketing, and design concepts to show why we’re susceptible to certain persuasive techniques. Packed with examples from every nook and cranny of the web, it provides easily digestible and applicable patterns for putting these design techniques to work. Organized by the seven deadly sins, it includes: Pride — use social proof to position your product in line with your visitors’ values Sloth — build a path of least resistance that leads users where you want them to go Gluttony — escalate customers’ commitment and use loss aversion to keep them there Anger — understand the power of metaphysical arguments and anonymity Envy — create a culture of status around your product and feed aspirational desires Lust — turn desire into commitment by using emotion to defeat rational behavior Greed — keep customers engaged by reinforcing the behaviors you desire Now you too can leverage human fallibility to create powerful persuasive interfaces that people will love to use — but will you use your new knowledge for good or evil? Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Ignore Everybody is back with more irreverent wisdom, wit, and original cartoons. "It has never been easier to make a great living doing what you love. But to make it happen, first you need an EVIL PLAN. Everybody needs to get away from lousy bosses, from boring, dead-end jobs that they hate, and ACTUALLY start doing something they love, something that matters. Life is short." -Hugh MacLeod Freud once said that in order to be truly happy people need two things: the capacity to work and the capacity to love. Evil Plans is about being able to do both at the same time. The sometimes unfortunate side effect is that others will hate you for it. MacLeod's insights are brash, wise, and often funny.

Book excerpt: Illuminating selections from Jung’s writings on the nature of evil Well-known for his articulation of the “shadow side” of human individuality and culture, C. G. Jung wrote a great deal about the question of evil throughout his life and in scattered places in his work. In this book, Murray Stein brings together key selections of Jung’s writings on the subject. In Jung’s early work on the unconscious, he considered the role of evil in the mental processes of the severely disturbed. Later, he viewed the question of moral choice within the framework of his ideas about archetypes and discussions about moral choices, conscience, and the continual ethical reflection that is necessary for all of us. The material here includes letters to Freud and Father Victor White and writings ranging from his Answer to Job to his travel piece on North Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the Garden of Eden story has been a cornerstone for the Christian doctrine of the Fall and original sin. In recent years, many scholars have disputed this understanding of Genesis 3 because it has no words for sin, transgression, disobedience, or punishment. Instead, it is about how the human condition came about. Yet the picture is not so simple. The Genesis of Good and Evil examines how the idea of the Fall developed in Jewish tradition on the eve of Christianity. In the end, the Garden of Eden is a rich study of humans in relation to God that leaves open many questions. One such question is, Does Genesis 3, 4, and 6, taken together, support the Christian doctrine of original sin? Smiths well-informed, close reading of these chapters concludes that it does. In this book, he addresses the many mysterious matters of the Garden story and invites readers to explore questions of their own.
