Book excerpt: Women Who Live Evil Lives documents the lives and practices of mixed-race, Black, Spanish, and Maya women sorcerers, spell-casters, magical healers, and midwives in the social relations of power in Santiago de Guatemala, the capital of colonial Central America. Men and women from all sectors of society consulted them to intervene in sexual and familial relations and disputes between neighbors and rival shop owners; to counter abusive colonial officials, employers, or husbands; and in cases of inexplicable illness. Applying historical, anthropological, and gender studies analysis, Martha Few argues that women's local practices of magic, curing, and religion revealed opportunities for women's cultural authority and power in colonial Guatemala. Few draws on archival research conducted in Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain to shed new light on women's critical public roles in Santiago, the cultural and social connections between the capital city and the countryside, and the gender dynamics of power in the ethnic and cultural contestation of Spanish colonial rule in daily life.

Shortly before her eleventh birthday she was made pregnant and, minutes after giving birth to the baby, Cynthia watched in horror as her own mother murdered the tiny infant, named Noleen, by repeatedly stabbing her with a knitting needle. Cynthia's mother then wrapped the baby girl in a plastic bag, dumped her in an alleyway and made her daughter go back to school and pretend nothing had ever happened. After enduring many more years of rape and violence, Cynthia came forward and reported her abuse and Noleen's death. Finally, in 2007, after a fifteen-year legal fight to have her baby girl formally identified, the jury at the 'Dun Laoghaire Baby' inquest declared that the baby found dead in an alleyway thirty-four years previously was Noleen Murphy, the daughter of Cynthia Owen. Cynthia's is a horrific story of brutality and loss, but ultimately, it is an account of love, immense bravery and her fight for justice in Noleen's name.

Book excerpt: I wrote this book because I feel there is a reason for all that is going on in the world; a cauldron of misery, suffering, anguish, and strife. Everyone is caught up in it and those who feel they are not or feel they have an educated reason and philosophy for what they see, are not seeing the bigger picture. Most people come up with the biggest, most elaborate questions and answers, but most do not tap into another reason or meaning for what life is about and what is transpiring. What if there is a very deeper meaning, deeper purpose besides the basic fundamentals of life that we know of, and our purpose here. What if everything we say, do and think about are just conforming to our own selfish reasons. I am trying to put forth the argument of what the real reasons are. The answers so many accept and try to figure out based on nothing else but the theoretical speculation and trial and error. The most brilliant minds in the world, the most compelling arguments, explanations and theories have played and still play a major role into where we are, where we are going and what we have reduced ourselves to. While many may look to rationalize an incoherent world with rational thought, many are ignoring what could be a devastating calamity taken place right under our noses. Something so subtle that it is less resound then a feather hitting the ground half way around the world, yet would have the impact to wipe out humanity or create hell on earth.

The absence of purpose which is a greater good (God) causes a systematic breakdown where the tentacles of misery and chaos run wild as one adopts the mentality of every man, women and child. The more selfish people become the less they care about those further and further away from their "personal space" to the point where they do not care about their own country, their own state, community right up to their own backyard. As evil advances the faithless retreat, one grows more and more selfish in the absence of God. Good and evil, right and wrong become meshed together and a vail of gray causes one unable to discern between the two.
