Book excerpt: This report documents efforts to understand approaches to evidential reasoning of use in application of expert-system or knowledge-based-system techniques to image analysis (IA). There is growing evidence that these techniques offer significant improvements in image analysis, particularly in the coordinated application of specialized algorithms. This effort has four principal goals: (1) to clarify the basic issues in evidential reasoning (ER), (2) to provide a common framework for analysis, (3) to structure the ER process for major expert-system tasks in image analysis, and (4) to identify promising directions for further research. This research was carried out in three major segments. The first segment structured the evidential reasoning problem in a formal paradigm robust enough to be of practical use in design and construction of expert systems. It then formulated six important theoretical approaches in a parallel fashion in order to identify key assumptions, similarities, and differences. The second segment applied each of the ER approaches to three important tasks for expert systems in the domain of image analysis. This segment concluded with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. The third segment addressed promising directions for further research. It reviewed current results and identified important questions bearing on successful application of expert-system technology to image analysis.

Book excerpt: Expert systems that operate in complex domains are continually confronted with the problem of deciding what to do next. Being able to reach a decision requires, in part, having the capacity to "reason" about a set of alternative actions. It has been argued that expert systems must reason from evidential information -- i.e., uncertain, incompletes, and occasionally inaccurate information. As a consequence, a model for reasoning about control must be capable of performing several tasks: to combine the evidential information that is generically distinct and from disparate sources; to overcome minor inaccuracies in the evidential information that is needed to reach a decision; to reason about what additional evidential information is required; to explain the actions taken (based on such information) by the system. These are a few of the formidable control problems that remain largely unsolved. If expert systems are to improve their performance significantly, they must utilize increasingly sophisticated and general models for dealing with the evidential information required for reasoning about their behavior. To this end we present an alternative, evidentially-based approach to reasoning about control that has several advantages over existing techniques. It enables us to reason from limited and imperfect information; to partition bodies of meta- and domain- knowledge into modular components; and to order potential actions flexibly by allowing any number of constraints (i.e., control strategies) to be imposed over a set of alternative actions. Furthermore, because it can be used for reasoning about the expenditure of additional resources to obtain the evidential information needed as a basis for choosing among alternatives, this approach can be employed recursively.

It is a prerequisite of the smart technology needed to help humans cope with the information explosion of the modern world. In addition, computational modelling of uncertain reasoning is a key to understanding human rationality. Previous computational accounts of uncertain reasoning have fallen into two camps: purely symbolic and numeric. This book represents a major advance by presenting a unifying framework which unites these opposing camps. The Incidence Calculus can be viewed as both a symbolic and a numeric mechanism. Numeric values are assigned indirectly to evidence via the possible worlds in which that evidence is true. This facilitates purely symbolic reasoning using the possible worlds and numeric reasoning via the probabilities of those possible worlds. Moreover, the indirect assignment solves some difficult technical problems, like the combinat ion of dependent sources of evidcence, which had defeated earlier mechanisms. Weiru Liu generalises the Incidence Calculus and then compares it to a succes sion of earlier computational mechanisms for uncertain reasoning: Dempster-Shafer Theory, Assumption-Based Truth Maintenance, Probabilis tic Logic, Rough Sets, etc. She shows how each of them is represented and interpreted in Incidence Calculus. The consequence is a unified mechanism which includes both symbolic and numeric mechanisms as special cases. It provides a bridge between symbolic and numeric approaches, retaining the advantages of both and overcoming some of their disadvantages.
