Book excerpt: The Saginaw lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS), flowed out of Saginaw Bay, across Lower Michigan and into northern Indiana. As it retreated, the Saginaw lobe deposited the Sturgis moraine, a recessional moraine of the lobe in southern Michigan. Positioned to the west and east of the Saginaw lobe were the Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes, respectively. These lobes retreated across the region asynchronously, with the Saginaw lobe retreating first. The asynchronous behavior of the lobes allowed for the Lake Michigan and Huron-Erie lobes to overprint and alter landscapes once occupied by the Saginaw lobe ice. The Kalamazoo moraine, an ice-marginal ridge north of the Kalamazoo River, is up-ice relative to the Sturgis moraine. Surficial geology and bedrock topographic mapping were completed north of the Kalamazoo moraine, to understand the distribution of glacial deposits of this area. Longitudinal and terrace profiles were created along prevailing meltwater channels in the area north of the Kalamazoo moraine using LiDAR data. Three OSL dates from prevailing meltwater channels yielded ages of 13.5 ± 1.4, 17.0 ±1.4, and 13.6 ± 1.5 ka. Surficial mapping, profile analysis, and OSL ages imply that meltwater originating from the Saginaw—Huron-Erie interlobate area drained westward across the Saginaw lobe terrain north of the Kalamazoo moraine. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages from lacustrine sediments from the Sturgis moraine include ages of 27.9 ± 1.7, 26.6 ± 1.7, and 23.4 ± 1.9 ka. One radiocarbon age (22.22 ± 0.8 cal ka BP) was determined from bryophytes from near the base of an ice-walled lake plain succession sampled atop the moraine. The OSL ages from the Sturgis moraine indicate that deglaciation of the Saginaw lobe could have been underway in Michigan between ≈27 and 22 ka, while ice margins of the Huron-Erie and Lake Michigan lobes were further south in Indiana and Illinois. This contrasts with previous reconstructions of the LIS which show a continuous ice margin at ≈20.5 cal ka BP much farther south of the Sturgis moraine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saginaw Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet occupied central Michigan and northern Indiana during the last glacial maximum. Evidence exists that the Saginaw Lobe retreated earlier than its neighboring lobes but attempts to constrain this retreat using radiocarbon dating methods has led to conflicting results. Optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL) offers an alternative methodology to date deglacial deposits. The Pigeon River Meltwater Channel (PRMC) was formed by a large, erosional pulse of meltwater that exited the ice sheet and eroded through the deglaciated landscape previously occupied by the Saginaw Lobe. Sediments that partially fill the PRMC were dated using OSL. Minimum ages for the retreat of the Saginaw Lobe were acquired to test the hypothesis that the Mongo area is ice free by 23 ka. A better understanding of deglaciation of study area was gained through mapping of surficial landforms. Knowledge of the subsurface stratigraphy was gained through geoprobe coring, vibracoring, and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Tunnel channels that are crosscut by the PRMC and the Sturgis Moraine were found to be ice collapse features that formed when buried ice deposited within the tunnel channels melted out after being covered by younger deposits. Optically stimulated luminescence dating is used to determine when outwash was deposited within the PRMC. Four OSL ages record sediment deposition in the PRMC following retreat of the Saginaw Lobe: 15.7 ± 2.7 ka, 17.1 ± 3.0 ka, 23.3 ± 5.8 ka, and 23.4 ± 4.4 ka. OSL ages therefore suggest that meltwater flowed through the PRMC as early as 23.3 ± 5.8 ka. The maximum PRMC age of 23.3 ± 5.8 ka is used as a minimum age for the final retreat of the Saginaw Lobe from Indiana. Three former Huron-Erie Lobe ice margins were mapped in the study area and further constrain ice sheet retreat. The Huron-Erie Lobe acted as the source of meltwater and sediment in the PRMC. Additionally, OSL ages of: 10.9 ± 0.9 ka, and 12.5 ± 1.5 ka from the Mongo dunes and one OSL age of 10.6 ± 0.8 ka from the top of the outwash surface buried by dunes record eolian activity during the Younger Dryas.

Book excerpt: The Saginaw and Huron-Erie lobes of the Laurentide Ice Sheet had a significant impact on the landscape of south-central Michigan after the Late Glacial Maximum. During the advances and retreats of these lobes, a complicated network of meltwater channels developed. Two goals of this study are: 1) to use sand-grain lithology, grain-size analysis, and longitudinal profiles to determine if a difference exists between Saginaw lobe and Huron-Erie lobe meltwater deposits; and 2) to determine if a large meltwater sluiceway containing the modern St. Joseph River had a source of meltwater and outwash from the Huron-Erie lobe. Two cores from drumlinized uplands formed by the Saginaw lobe were compared to three cores from the St. Joseph sluiceway that, based on longitudinal profiles, carried meltwater from the Huron-Erie lobe. Grain-size and sand-grain lithology analysis were conducted on these five cores. The sand-grain lithology analysis indicates a significant difference in shale content between the cores within the channelized lowland and the drumlinized uplands. Increased shale content within the channelized lowlands is likely derived from Paleozoic shales within the flow path of the Huron-Erie lobe (Coldwater, Antrim, Sunbury, Bedford Shales). Longitudinal profiles and mapping of the channelized lowlands show a gentle gradient from east to west indicating a meltwater source from the Huron-Erie lobe.

Book excerpt: Understanding the timing and rate of ice retreat in the Great Lakes Region is critical to understanding any relationship between ice lobes and climate during the Late Wisconsinan time period. The purpose of this study is to constrain the age of the Sturgis Moraine, an end moraine of the Saginaw Lobe in south-central Michigan using minimum-limiting radiocarbon and OSL ages. Previous correlations between till stratigraphy and end moraines suggest that the Sturgis Moraine formed between 15,500 and 16,100 14C yrs BP, but with little direct supporting chronologic data. To date the Sturgis Moraine, Livingstone sediment cores were collected from three scour lakes within tunnel channels at the distal side of the moraine. Scour rather than kettle lakes are chosen to minimize any organic accumulation lag from meltout of buried ice. Basal ages from gravelly sand in these cores are 13,700±60, 13,750±80, and 13,300±60 14C yrs BP. These ages are similar to basal ages from Clear Lake (13,300±300 14C yrs BP), a kettle lake on the distal side of the Valparaiso Moraine of the Lake Michigan Lobe, and the Hyre (13,690±50 14C yrs BP), Kenan (13,880±70 14C yrs BP), and Pyles (13,510±160 14C yrs BP) sites from kettle lakes on the distal side of the Fort Wayne Moraine of the Huron Erie Lobe. The minimum-limiting ages for the Sturgis Moraine presented in this study suggest a younger ice margin and smaller Saginaw re-entrant than previously envisioned. OSL dated sand dunes from within an outwash valley distal of the Saginaw Moraine (14.3±0.6 and 14.1±0.5 ka) and from dunes that migrated out of the valley bottom (12.6±0.4, 12.3±0.4, 12.4±0.5 and 12.0±0.4 ka) appear to record two separate aeolian activation periods. These ages agree with other sand dune chronologies from northwest Indiana and northwest Ohio suggesting regional variation in climate at these times. The radiocarbon and OSL ages from this study provide a best limiting minimum age of 13,750 ± 80 14C yrs BP (16,320-16,930 cal yrs BP) for deglaciation at the Sturgis Moraine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking advantage of new technological advances in Quaternary geology and geomorphology, this volume showcases new developments in glacial geology. Honoring the legacy of Frank Leverett and F.B. Taylor's 1915 USGS monograph of the region, this book includes 12 chapters that cover diverse topics ranging from hydrogeology, near-surface geophysics, geotectonics, and vertebrate paleontology to glacial geomorphology and glacial history. Several papers make use of detailed but nuanced shaded relief maps of digital elevation models of LiDAR data; these advances are brought into historical perspective by visiting the history of geologic mapping of Michigan. Looking forward, interpretations of the shaded relief maps evoke novel processes, such as regional evolution of subglacial and supraglacial drainage systems of receding glacial margins. The volume also includes assessment of chronological issues in light of greater accuracy and precision of radiocarbon dating of plant fossils using accelerator mass spectrometry versus older techniques.
