Book excerpt: The inclusive production of eta mesons in tau lepton decay has been studied using the High Resolution Spectrometer at the PEP ee− facility. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1 and the storage ring was operated at .sqrt.s = 29 GeV. The eta production appears to be only compatible with the decay tau− .-->. .pi.−eta nu, which violates isospin and G-parity conservation. The branching ratio of 5.1 +- 1.5% explains much of the current discrepancy between the one-prong topological branching ratio and the sum of the individual one-prong modes. Various checks to test the validity of the signal are described.

The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85[+-] 0.56[+-] 0.51) x 10[sup -4]. The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the Conserved-Vector-Current (CVC) prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels[tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][omega][nu][sub[tau]], 2[pi][sup -][pi][sup+][eta][nu][sub[tau]], and[pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][eta][nu][sub[tau]]. This is the first observation of this[omega] decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89[sub -0.67][sup+0.74][+-] 0.40) x 10[sup -4].

Book excerpt: Motivated by the question of missing exclusive branching fractions in tau decays, mostly suspected to be in one prong decays with neutrals, we have studied the decay tau .-->. rho nu in tau pair production by ee− annihilation at .sqrt.s = 3.77 GeV. The branching fraction is measured to be B(tau .-->. rho nu) = (23.0 +- 1.3 +- 1.7)% consistent with known measurements and not offering a solution to the branching ratio question. No eta signal in the .gamma gamma. mass spectrum pointing to a decay tau .-->. eta .pi. nu is obvious. An upper limit on this branching fraction is given.

The measured branching fractions are[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][pi][sup -][pi][sup+][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (3.4[sub -0.5][sup+0.6][+-] 0.6) x 10[sup -4] and[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -]2[pi][sup 0][eta][nu][sub[tau]])= (1.4[+-] 0.6[+-] 0.3) x 10[sup -4]. We observe clear evidence for f[sub 1][yields][eta][pi][pi] substructure and measure[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields] f[sub 1][pi][sup -][nu][sub[tau]])= (5.8[sub -1.3][sup+1.4][+-] 1.8) x 10[sup -4]. We have also searched for[eta][prime](958) production and obtain 90% CL upper limits[Beta]([tau][sup -][yields][pi][sup -][eta][prime][nu][sub[tau]])
