Book excerpt: We present a search for the decay B -->?+?{sub?} using 467.8 x 106 B{anti B} pairs collected at the?(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. We select a sample of events with on completely reconstructed B− in an hadronic decay mode (B− --> D{sup (*)0}X− and B− --> J/? X−). We examine the rest of the event to search for a B+ -->?+?{sub?} decay. We identify the?+ lepton in the following modes:?+ --> e+?{sub e}{anti?}{sub?},?+ -->?+?{sub {mu}}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}+ -->?+{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}} and {tau}+ -->?{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}. We find an excess of events with respect to expected background, which excludes the null signal hypothesis at the level of 3.3? and can be converted to a branching fraction central value of B(B+ --> {tau}+ {nu}{sub {tau}})= (1.80{sup + 0.57}{sub - 0.54}(stat.) ± 0.26 (syst.)) x 10−4.

One of the two B mesons from the [Upsilon](4S) is reconstructed in a hadronic or a semileptonic final state and the decay products of the other B in the event are analyzed for consistency with a B[sup -] [yields] [tau][sup -] [bar [nu]][sub [tau]] decay. We find no evidence of a signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of [Beta](B[sup -] [yields] [tau][sup -] [bar [nu]][sub [tau]])

The branching fraction of {tau}{sup -} {yields} 3h{sup -} 2h{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}} is measured to be (8.56 {+-} 0.05{sub stat} {+-} 0.42{sub sys}) x 10{sup -4}. The underlaying substructure of this decay exposes strong contribution from {rho} resonance. The decay {tau}{sup -} {yields} f{sub 1}(1285){pi}{sup -} {nu}{sub {tau}} with f{sub 1}(1285) {yields} 2{pi}{sup -}2{pi}{sup +} is observed and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be (3.9 {+-} 0.7{sub stat} {+-} 0.5{sub sys}) x 10{sup -4}. The search for {tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -}3{pi}{sup +}({pi}{sup 0}){nu}{sub {tau}} decay was performed and without evidence of the signal the upper limit of B({tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -}3{pi}{sup +}({pi}{sup 0}){nu}{sub {tau}}) is estimated to be 3.0 x 10{sup -7} at 90% confidence limit. The upper limits on branching fractions for the exclusive decays {tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -}3{pi}{sup +}{nu}{sub {tau}} and {tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -}3{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} are found to be 4.3 x 10{sup -7} and 2.5 x 10{sup -7} at 90% confidence limit, respectively.

Book excerpt: Based on the full BaBar data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*)) = B(B -> D(*) Tau Nu)/B(B -> D(*) l Nu), where l is either an electron or a muon. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D) = 0.440 +- 0.058 +- 0.042 and R(D*) = 0.332 +- 0.024 +- 0.018, which exceed the Standard Model expectations by 2.0 sigma and 2.7 sigma, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4 sigma level, which could be an indication of beyond-the-Standard- Model processes affecting these decays. We examine whether the excess in R(D) and R(D*) could be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model, which describes the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric model at tree level. We exclude this possibility in the full parameter space with a probability of at least 99.8%, or 3.1sigma significance. We also report the observation of the decay B -> D Tau Nu, with a significance of 6.8 sigma.

Book excerpt: We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decay modes B{sup ±} → h{sup ±} [tau]l (h = K, [pi]; l = e, [mu]) using the BABAR data sample, which corresponds to 472 million B{bar B} pairs. The search uses events where one B meson is fully reconstructed in one of several hadronic final states. Using the momenta of the reconstructed B, h, and l candidates, we are able to fully determine the [tau] four-momentum. The resulting [tau] candidate mass is our main discriminant against combinatorial background. We see no evidence for B{sup ±} → h{sup ±} [tau]l decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on each branching fraction at the level of a few times 10−5.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics predicts that the branching ratio for the rare decay B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} is 3.1 x 10{sup -8}, though untested models which could supersede it predict large enhancements. This dissertation describes the search for this rare decay in 210.4 fb{sup -1} of B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance in the Babar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In the analysis, one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode and recoil events which are consistent with each tau decaying in a mode {tau} {yields} {pi}{nu}, {rho}{nu}, or l{nu}{bar {nu}} are selected. There is no evidence for signal. The result is consistent with a downward fluctuation by 1.1 statistical standard deviations of the expected Standard Model background. Taking the expected background, the number of observed events and the expected statistical and systematic errors into account yields 2.7 x 10{sup -3} as the upper limit for B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} at the 90% confidence level.

Book excerpt: The flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) process, $B^+$ → $K^+ [tau]^+ [tau]^-$ highly suppressed in the Standard Model (SM). This decay is forbidden at tree level and only occurs at lowest order via one-loop diagrams.$B^+$ → $K^+ [tau]^+ [tau]^-$ thus has the potential to provide a stringent test of the SM and a fertile ground for new physics searches. Contributions due to virtual particles in the loop allow one to probe, at relatively low energies, new physics at large mass scales. We search for the rare FCNC process $B^+$ → $K^+ [tau]^+ [tau]^-$ using data collected by the BaBaR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The BaBaR data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity, at the energy of the [Tau](4S) resonance, of 424.4 $fb^-1$ and 471 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs. For this search, hadronic $B_{tag}$ reconstruction is employed, where one B is exclusively reconstructed via one of many possible hadronic modes. The remaining decay products in an event are then attributed to the signal B, on which the search for $B^+$ → $K^+ [tau]^+ [tau]^-$ is performed. Each [tau] is required to decay leptonically, into either an electron or a muon and the lepton neutrinos. Furthermore, a multi-variate analysis technique (neural network) is used to select for signal events and suppress dominant background modes. No significant signal is observed. The resulting branching fraction is measured to be $\beta(B^+$ → $K^+ [tau]^+)$ = $1.31^{0:66}_{-0:61}$(stat.) $^{+0:35}_{-0:25}$(sys.) x 10$^{-3}$, which is consistent with zero at the 1.9[sigma] level, with an upper limit of 2.25 x 10$^{-3}$, at the 90% confidence level.
