Book excerpt: Based on the full BaBar data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*)) = B(B -> D(*) Tau Nu)/B(B -> D(*) l Nu), where l is either an electron or a muon. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D) = 0.440 +- 0.058 +- 0.042 and R(D*) = 0.332 +- 0.024 +- 0.018, which exceed the Standard Model expectations by 2.0 sigma and 2.7 sigma, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4 sigma level, which could be an indication of beyond-the-Standard- Model processes affecting these decays. We examine whether the excess in R(D) and R(D*) could be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model, which describes the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric model at tree level. We exclude this possibility in the full parameter space with a probability of at least 99.8%, or 3.1sigma significance. We also report the observation of the decay B -> D Tau Nu, with a significance of 6.8 sigma.

We select a sample of events with on completely reconstructed B− in an hadronic decay mode (B− --> D{sup (*)0}X− and B− --> J/? X−). We examine the rest of the event to search for a B+ -->?+?{sub?} decay. We identify the?+ lepton in the following modes:?+ --> e+?{sub e}{anti?}{sub?},?+ -->?+?{sub {mu}}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}+ -->?+{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}} and {tau}+ -->?{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}. We find an excess of events with respect to expected background, which excludes the null signal hypothesis at the level of 3.3? and can be converted to a branching fraction central value of B(B+ --> {tau}+ {nu}{sub {tau}})= (1.80{sup + 0.57}{sub - 0.54}(stat.) ± 0.26 (syst.)) x 10−4.

From a combined fit to B− and {bar B}° channels, we obtain the branching fractions?(B → D{sub {tau}}−{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}) = (0:86 ± 0:24 ± 0:11 ± 0:06)% and?(B → D*{tau}−{bar {nu}}{sub {tau}}) = (1:62 ± 0:31 ± 0:10 ± 0:05)% (normalized for the {bar B}°), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and normalization-mode-related.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics predicts that the branching ratio for the rare decay B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} is 3.1 x 10{sup -8}, though untested models which could supersede it predict large enhancements. This dissertation describes the search for this rare decay in 210.4 fb{sup -1} of B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance in the Babar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In the analysis, one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode and recoil events which are consistent with each tau decaying in a mode {tau} {yields} {pi}{nu}, {rho}{nu}, or l{nu}{bar {nu}} are selected. There is no evidence for signal. The result is consistent with a downward fluctuation by 1.1 statistical standard deviations of the expected Standard Model background. Taking the expected background, the number of observed events and the expected statistical and systematic errors into account yields 2.7 x 10{sup -3} as the upper limit for B{sup 0} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} at the 90% confidence level.
