Book excerpt: Four retired CIA agents team up when one of their own goes missing in this spy thriller by the bestselling author of The Tears of Autumn. Welcome to the world of Charles McCarry’s legendary character, Paul Christopher, the crack intelligence agent who is as skilled at choosing a fine wine as he is at tradecraft, at once elegant and dangerous, sophisticated and rough-and-ready . . . Paul Christopher, now an aging but remarkably fit seventy-ish, is dining at home with his cousin Horace, also an ex-agent. Dinner is delicious and uneventful. A day later, Paul has vanished. The months pass, Paul’s ashes are delivered by a Chinese official to the American consulate in Beijing and a memorial service is held in Washington. But Horace is not convinced that Paul is dead and, enlisting the support of four other retired colleagues—a sort of all-star backfield of the old Outfit—Horace gets the “Old Boys” back in the game to find Paul Christopher. Harassed by American intelligence, hunted by terrorists, Horace Christopher and the Old Boys travel the globe, from Xinjiang to Brazil, from Rome to Tel Aviv, Budapest to Moscow, in search of Paul and the unspeakably dangerous truth. Praise for Old Boys “Old Boys is like the best parts of ten John le Carre novels all put together.” —Time “As soon as he began publishing fiction more than three decades ago, Charles McCarry was recognized as a spy novelist of uncommon gifts. . . . McCarry is a careful plotter and an unfussy stylist; he nourishes his narrative with cosmopolitan reflections on the craft. . . . Old Boys is, at heart, a lament for a dying generation of American spies, an elegy for the human twilight, Cocoon with a cloak and dagger.” —Washington Post “McCarry is the best modern writer on the subject of intrigue.” —P. J. O’Rourke, The Weekly Standard “McCarry's latest is an old-fashioned, rollicking adventure that beats Ludlum and Cussler at their own game. . . . McCarry’s commitment to [his] fanciful premise is absolute, and the resulting yarn combines the intrepid exploits of John Buchan, the cagey intrigue of Eric Ambler, and the clipped cadences of Dashiell Hammett. Tremendous fun.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UPDATED 2ND EDITION AS OF DECEMBER, 2015. DONT MISS IT!Budapest by a local has been designed to provide you travellers with an insider's perspective to the charming and bustling Hungarian capital. Budapest is a unique place in Europe, with a unique language and an interesting development over time. In the first chapter you will be introduced to the magnificent "Pearl of the Danube", which has so much to offer and in the second chapter, you will find out fun facts that you probably didn't know about this hidden gem. To begin your travel you must get acquainted with the city and that is what Chapter 3 intends to do by providing a layout structure of Budapest, to make getting around easier. Budapest is located on the banks of the Danube and in fact the whole city revolves around it. You can enjoy the Danube by booking one of the many cruises available for all intents and purposes, from wine tastings to dinner and music cruises. Read about in Chapter 4 "Cruising the Danube". In Chapter 5 you get to discover Budapest through a local's eye, with a guide to the best thermal baths, important historical and cultural sites, markets, interesting facts about the Jewish legacy in Budapest and a Bonus Tip (one of my favorite things to do in Budapest). Music is such an important part of Budapest's cultural life. Live music is available everywhere around the city and you can attend wonderful classical music concerts or modern music festivals. Read about it in Chapter 6: The City of Music. Not all treasures and man made in Budapest. Au contraire, Budapest is home to some pretty amazing parks that are more than just trees and benches. Find out more about in Chapter 7: Budapest's Natural Treasures. After all this sightseeing and strolling around parks, you are bound to get hungry and the Hungarian cuisine is presented to you in Chapter 8: Hungry in Hungary. Hungary is also known world wide besides it scrumptious gastronomy for its delicious wines and no visit to the capital is complete without relishing in our wines. "Wine in Budapest" will tell you where to go for wine tastings or what wine bar to try during your visit. Budapest has a great shopping scene, ranging from luxury stores to local designers department stores. You'll want to sport your new outfits in our sizzling hot clubs. Know where to do both by reading Chapter 10: the shopping scene and the vibrant nightlife. If you're not into clubbing but still want to have an authentic Budapest experience, you can try some of our unique ruin bars, which are quite a phenomenon lately. For my personal favorites, read chapter 11: The Budapest Experience: which are the best "ruin pubs"Finally, I bid you Viszontlátásra (Goodbye) from Budapest in the last chapter, not before I present to you one more time what makes Budapest so attractive to tourists and the increasing expat community that has decided to make this city their new home.

Book excerpt: First published in 1999, Secret Kingdom was the second panel in Francis Bennett's Cold War trilogy. 'For all of us now the Cold War is history... What interested me as a writer was how we survived. What went on behind the scenes?... I went looking for my own fictional explanations for historical events... In Secret Kingdom, which takes place in Hungary in the dangerous summer months [of 1956] that led directly to the Revolution, I knew that the British ambassador's warnings of trouble building up had been ignored by the Foreign Office in London. Why? What were the consequences of such an extraordinary and irresponsible act?' Francis Bennett 'The Cold War here is not just a political but also a psychological landscape... In picking out a personal history from the greater tapestry unfolding in the background Bennett has produced a literary thriller of considerable merit.' The Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "war on terror" has generated a scramble for expertise on Islamic or Asian "culture" and revived support for area studies, but it has done so at the cost of reviving the kinds of dangerous generalizations that area studies have rightly been accused of. This book provides a much-needed perspective on area studies, a perspective that is attentive to both manifestations of "traditional culture" and the new global relationships in which they are being played out. The authors shake off the shackles of the orientalist legacy but retain a close reading of local processes. They challenge the boundaries of China and question its study from different perspectives, but believe that area studies have a role to play if their geographies are studied according to certain common problems. In the case of China, the book shows the diverse array of critical but solidly grounded research approaches that can be used in studying a society. Its approach neither trivializes nor dismisses the elusive effects of culture, and it pays attention to both the state and the multiplicity of voices that challenge it.
