Book Synopsis Everything Old is New Again by : Miriam Plavin-Masterman
Download or read book Everything Old is New Again written by Miriam Plavin-Masterman and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarship on institutional entrepreneurship highlights the kinship between for-profit entrepreneurship and the equally transformative innovation and initiative of entrepreneurs in the non-profit, community, and policy-activist fields. This expanded exploration of entrepreneurial potential has become important in the creative destruction—or, more accurately, “creative reclamation”—of abandoned or under-used industrial relics and urban space. This book explores case studies in New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, where community groups have deployed or are attempting to deploy symbolism and narrative to re-purpose abandoned urban infrastructure into urban public spaces. The author combines interviews, document analysis, site visits, and census tract data to determine how Friends of the Park organizations successfully navigate institutional settings to create public spaces and manage the discourse around these proposed spaces. In-depth descriptions are an essential component of the process. If a certain kind of unsuccessful discourse theme (or successful one) exhibits itself in a large portion of the potential population, it will likely show in this small sample; if the discourse exhibits itself in a very small portion, it very unlikely that it will show. Small samples, in other words, are a wide-mesh net, convenient for catching the big themes.
Book Synopsis Everything Old Is New Again... by : Therese Anne Edwards
Download or read book Everything Old Is New Again... written by Therese Anne Edwards and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-09-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I come from a family of cooks and chef’s so it seems natural to me to be fascinated by the art of cooking and to share that interest with those who also have a love of cooking, particularly those who still cook the old recipes handed down from their parents, aunts and uncles and also grandparents. I personally, as a sole trader or as a partner have owned a number of businesses over the years, most of which were in the food industry, so it is a natural progression to write a book of recipes. Since I have recently found myself to be gluten intolerant, I have found it most rewarding to have been able to convert the greater majority of our recipes into gluten free meals.

Download or read book Fifty in Reverse written by Bill Flanagan and published by Tiller Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From TV personality and radio host Bill Flanagan comes a highly entertaining time-traveling adventure novel about how the past never gives up its hold on the present and how even sixty-five-year-olds are still kids at heart. If you had the chance to live your life over again, knowing everything that you know now, would you take it? Would you still take it if it meant losing everything you have today? Would a second chance to correct every mistake and missed opportunity be worth giving up the world you know and the life you have built? In Fifty in Reverse, fifteen-year-old Peter Wyatt does just that. In the spring of 1970, Harvard psychologist Terry Canyon is introduced to Peter, a quiet kid from a wealthy family who has been suspended from ninth grade for stripping off his clothes in Algebra class. When Terry asks Peter why he did it, the boy explains that he was trying to “shock myself awake.” It turns out that Peter believes he is a sixty-five-year-old man who went to sleep in his home in New York in the year 2020 and woke up in his childhood bedroom fifty years earlier. Hilariously depicting Peter’s attempts to fit in as a fifteen-year-old in 1970 and to cope with the tedium, foolishness, and sexual temptations of high school as he tries to retain the sense of himself as a sixty-five-year-old man, Fifty in Reverse is a thought-provoking and enlightening novel about second chances and appreciating the life you have today.
Book Synopsis Professional Development That Sticks by : Fred Ende
Download or read book Professional Development That Sticks written by Fred Ende and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we approach professional development in a thoughtful way, keep teachers motivated, and make the process worthwhile? It's a truth that school leaders can't deny: teachers tend to think of PD as a distraction from the "real work" of the classroom—as something to get through instead of an opportunity to engage, learn, and grow as professionals. Too often, they're absolutely right. When PD is packaged as a one-size-fits-all, one-and-done experience, even content that teachers might greet with enthusiasm won't stay with them for long. It just doesn't stick. In Professional Development That Sticks, Fred Ende makes the case for a better approach—one that melds traditional PD structures with personalized learning. Here, school leaders will find a framework for developing professional learning experiences that spark and maintain teacher motivation and lead to real changes in practice. Ende's three-stage professional development for learning (PDL) process covers critical aspects of planning, providing, and following up. In addition, PDL's Think, Act, and Reflect method ensures your teachers will acquire meaningful, deep, "sticky" learning that lasts.

Book Synopsis Corporations Are People Too by : Kent Greenfield
Download or read book Corporations Are People Too written by Kent Greenfield and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we’re better off treating corporations as people under the law—and making them behave like citizens Are corporations people? The U.S. Supreme Court launched a heated debate when it ruled in Citizens United that corporations can claim the same free speech rights as humans. Should corporations be able to claim rights of free speech, religious conscience, and due process? Kent Greenfield provides an answer: Sometimes. With an analysis sure to challenge the assumptions of both progressives and conservatives, Greenfield explores corporations' claims to constitutional rights and the foundational conflicts about their obligations in society. He argues that a blanket opposition to corporate personhood is misguided, since it is consistent with both the purpose of corporations and the Constitution itself that corporations can claim rights at least some of the time. The problem with Citizens United is not that corporations have a right to speak, but for whom they speak. The solution is not to end corporate personhood but to require corporations to act more like citizens.

Book Synopsis Reading with Oprah by : Kathleen Rooney
Download or read book Reading with Oprah written by Kathleen Rooney and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adored by its fans, deplored by its critics, Oprah's Book Club has been at the center of arguments about cultural authority and literary taste since it began in 1996. Reading with Oprah explores the club's revolutionary fusion of books, television, and commerce and tells the engaging and in-depth story of the OBC phenomenon. Kathleen Rooney combines extensive research with a dynamic voice to reveal the club's far-reaching cultural impact and its role as crucible for the clash between "high" and "low" literary taste. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book covers the club from its inception in 1996, through the Jonathan Franzen contretemps, the surprising suspension in 2002, and, after the club's return in 2003, the progression from "great books" to memoir. New material includes an extensive look at the James Frey scandal and Oprah's turn to contemporary fiction, including The Road and Middlesex. Through close examination of Winfrey's picks and personal interviews with book club authors and readers, Rooney demonstrates how the club that Barbara Kingsolver calls "one of the best possible uses of a television set" has, according to Wally Lamb, "gotten people of all ages to read, to read more, and to read widely."
