Book excerpt: Born in African American work songs, field hollers, and the powerful legacy of the spirituals, the blues traveled the country from the Mississippi delta to “Sweet Home Chicago,” forming the backbone of American music. In this anthology–the first devoted exclusively to blues poems–a wide array of poets pay tribute to the form and offer testimony to its lasting power. The blues have left an indelible mark on the work of a diverse range of poets: from “The Weary Blues” by Langston Hughes and “Funeral Blues” by W. H. Auden, to “Blues on Yellow” by Marilyn Chin and “Reservation Blues” by Sherman Alexie. Here are blues-influenced and blues-inflected poems from, among others, Gwendolyn Brooks, Allen Ginsberg, June Jordan, Richard Wright, Nikki Giovanni, Charles Wright, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Cornelius Eady. And here, too, are classic song lyrics–poems in their own right–from Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Ma Rainey, and Muddy Waters. The rich emotional palette of the blues is fully represented here in verse that pays tribute to the heart and humor of the music, and in poems that swing with its history and hard-bitten hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is replete with conflicts between various governments and various religious factions. Author and retired educator H. Kenneth MacLennan has come to realize that these conflicts will not be resolved until the believers of these religions and governments better understand the true nature of those things in which they believe. Everymans Prayer Book is a humorous, satirical, and a sometimes serious look at the nature of how democratic governments and their courts using many of the same pillars and elements of the legal definition of witchcraft (crafty science, sorcery, and fortune telling) to procure tax payments from believers as Christianity uses in seeking offerings from believers. In considering the nature of democratic governments and their courts, you will find important truths and insights into human nature. Those insights and truths will be revealed through satirizing, ridiculing, lampooning, skewering, deflating, dissecting, embarrassing, undressing, unmasking, and exposing the illusion that the crafty science of democracy represents the people, and that there is such a thing as real justice in the courts of democratic governments. Without faith in the existence and power of God, although the concept of faith is without foundation and the opposite of reason, believers would not accept the power of religions or democratic governments and their courts.

Above all this, there loomed in men's minds the indelible memory of the martyrdom of King Charles. CHAPTER 11 THE FIFTH ENGLISH PRATER BOOK THE Savoy Confer-ence came to an end in July, 1661: before the Christmas of that year Convocation had com-pleted the Fifth Prayer Book, which is the book in use to-day in the Church of England; and the next year this was annexed to the Act of Uniformity. The preced-ing chapter has, we hope, shown the conditions un-der which the new Prayer Book was produced and the principles which actu-ated the revisers. These are stated with much clearness in the first of the present prefaces to the English Prayer Book, which was then added, and is called simply "The Preface." It was written by Sanderson, of Lincoln. Bishop Sanderson. Bishop The Principal Changes The changes described in this Preface are--I. (direcTions) for the better direction of the officiant, 2. (verbal) the alteration of obsolete phrases, 3. (scripture) the use of the Authorized Version, especially for the Epistles and Gospels, 4. (additions) some new prayers and thanksgivings, especially for use at Sea, and an order for the Baptism of Adults. These alterations are about 600 in number. Let us endeavour to summarize the more important under the four heads just mentioned. 1. Directions. Among the more important are: a rubric providing for the use of anthems at choir offices "in Quires and Places where they sing "; at Holy Communion, the rubric giving direction for the fraction and other manual acts, previously left to tradition, and two rubrics ordering that what remains of the Sacrament after the Communion shall be covered with a linen veil, and afterwards be reverently consumed; in Confirmation the Catechism was...

Book excerpt: A vital and surprising hardcover collection of poems about, and inspired by, jazz music. AN EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY POCKET POET. Selected and Edited by Kevin Young. Ever since its first flowering, jazz has had a powerful influence on American poetry; this scintillating anthology offers a treasury of poems that are as varied and as vital as the music that inspired them. From the Harlem Renaissance to the beat movement, from the poets of the New York school to the contemporary poetry scene, the jazz aesthetic has been a compelling literary force—one that Jazz Poems makes palpable. We hear it in the poems of Langston Hughes, E. E. Cummings, William Carlos Williams, Frank O’Hara, and Gwendolyn Brooks, and in those of Yusef Komunyakaa, Charles Simic, Rita Dove, Ntozake Shange, Mark Doty, William Matthews, and C. D. Wright. Here are poems that pay tribute to jazz’s great voices, and poems that throb with the vivid rhythm and energy of the jazz tradition, ranging in tone from mournful elegy to sheer celebration. Includes: • “Jazz Band in a Parisian Cabaret” by Langston Hughes • “God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog, Jr. • “Jazz Fantasia” by Carl Sandburg • “Ol’ Bunk’s Band” by William Carlos Williams • “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks • “Chasing the Bird” by Robert Creeley • “Victrola” by Robert Pinsky • “Pres Spoke in a Language” by Amiri Baraka • “The Day Lady Died” by Frank O’Hara • “Art Pepper” by Edward Hirsch • “Snow” by Billy Collins Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket.

Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1950 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Rebecca Beard was widely known in the post-war period as a gifted speaker and teacher in the field of spiritual therapy. Her first book, "Everyman's Search," went through many editions because it offered practical suggestions to those seeking a deeper awareness of the power of God in their lives. Dr. Beard practiced medicine for twenty years until she recognized the tremendous influence that thoughts and emotions have upon the physical body. Her medical experience and research led her to the conviction that thoughts and emotions are largely responsible for many types of illness, and that by understanding the thoughts and redirecting the emotions, with the ever present help of prayer, lives can be re-molded and bodies healed.

Book excerpt: Written in Middle English during the Tudor period, "Everyman" is the most famous example of the medieval morality play. Popular in Europe during the 15th and 16th century, morality plays were allegorical dramas in which the protagonists are met with the personifications of personal attributes and tasked with choosing either a good and godly life or evil. "Everyman" is the archetypal morality play, as the main character, Everyman, represents all of mankind. God, frustrated with the wicked and greedy, sends Death to Everyman and summons him to account for his misdeeds and sins. It was believed that God tallied all of one's good and evil deeds in life and then one must provide an accounting before God upon one's death. During Everyman's pilgrimage to God, he meets many characters, such as Fellowship, Good Deeds, and Knowledge. Everyman asks them all to join him in his journey so that he may improve his reckoning before God. In the end, it is only Good Deeds that stays with him before God and helps Everyman find salvation and eternal life. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, poets have felt the ancient pull of the sea, exploring the full range of mankind's nautical fears, dreams, and longings. The colorful legends of the sea-pirates and mermaids, phantom ships and the sunken city of Atlantis-have inspired as many imaginations as have the realities of lighthouses and shipwrecks, of icebergs and frothing foam and seaweed. This marvelous collection includes classics old and new, from Homer and Milton to Plath and Merwin. Here are Tennyson's seductive sea-fairies next to Poe's beloved Annabel Lee. Here is Coleridge's darkly brooding "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" alongside the grandeur of Shakespeare's "Full Fathom Five." And here is Masefield's "I must go down to the seas again" alongside Cavafy's "Ithaka" and Stevens's "The Idea of Order at Key West." In the wide variety of lyrics collected here-sonnets and sea chanteys, ballads and hymns and prayers-we feel the encompassing power of our planet's restless
