Download or read book Small Bites written by Annabelle Zinser and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on her experiences as a Buddhist teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, Annabelle Zinser developed meditation and mindfulness practices for a variety of everyday situations and the transformation of emotional challenges. In short chapters the author demonstrates how to connect the awareness of our breath with focusing our mindfulness on a particular topic at hand, such as: dealing with inferiority complex; recognizing negative thoughts and emotions; taking care of our sexuality; seeing our ancestors within us. This puts us in touch with the healing capacity of the present moment, and gives us a tool to transform even the most difficult and painful aspects of our lives into something joyful and healing. In their simplicity, the meditations follow the model of Metta meditation, aiming for the cultivation of our hearts and spirits. They always begin with focusing on the breath but from there expand to addressing a broad spectrum of mental conditions and life situations. Written for anyone aiming to living in a more grounded and sustainable way, Small Bites offers immediately applicable guidance in applying key mindfulness practices to daily life.

Download or read book What's the Use? written by Ian Stewart and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See the world in a completely new way as an esteemed mathematician shows how math powers the world—from technology to health care and beyond. Almost all of us have sat in a math class, wondering when we'd ever need to know how to find the roots of a polynomial or graph imaginary numbers. And in one sense, we were right: if we needed to, we'd use a computer. But as Ian Stewart argues in What's the Use?, math isn't just about boring computations. Rather, it offers us new and profound insights into our world, allowing us to accomplish feats as significant as space exploration and organ donation. From the trigonometry that keeps a satellite in orbit to the prime numbers used by the world's most advanced security systems to the imaginary numbers that enable augmented reality, math isn't just relevant to our lives. It is the very fabric of our existence.

Book excerpt: A piece must be practical enough to be used every day. It must be crafted at its place of origin, using traditional techniques and materials. And it must be handmade. Japanese craft has long been revered for its quality and beauty, and skilled craftwork remains an important part of Japanese life. 'Utsuwa', meaning 'for everyday use', embodies the ethos of handmaking in Japan, where handcrafted wares must be as practical as they are beautiful. This book takes us behind the scenes into the private studios of some of Japan's most exciting artisans to reveal stories of material, method, place and culture. It guides us through quiet galleries and colourful marketplaces, where the provenance of a piece is central to its story. Utsuwa is a love letter to the makers and sellers, and to all those who share the Japanese reverence for tradition and beauty.

Book Synopsis Everyday Adventures with Unruly Data by : Melanie Feinberg
Download or read book Everyday Adventures with Unruly Data written by Melanie Feinberg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paired informal and scholarly essays show how everyday events reveal fundamental concepts of data, including its creation, aggregation, management, and use. Whether questioning numbers on a scale, laughing at a misspelling of one’s name, or finding ourselves confused in a foreign supermarket, we are engaging with data. The only way to handle data responsibly, says Melanie Feinberg in this incisive work, is to take into account its human character. Though the data she discusses may seem familiar, close scrutiny shows it to be ambiguous, complicated, and uncertain: unruly. Drawing on the tools of information science, she uses everyday events such as deciding between Blender A and Blender B on Amazon to demonstrate a practical, critical, and generative mode of thinking about data: its creation, management, aggregation, and use. Each chapter pairs a self-contained main essay (an adventure) with a scholarly companion essay (the reflection). The adventure begins with an anecdote—visiting the library, running out of butter, cooking rice on a different stove. Feinberg argues that to understand the power and pitfalls of data science, we must attend to the data itself, not merely the algorithms that manipulate it. As she reflects on the implications of commonplace events, Feinberg explicates fundamental concepts of data that reveal the many tiny design decisions—which may not even seem like design at all—that shape how data comes to be. Through the themes of serendipity, objectivity, equivalence, interoperability, taxonomy, labels, and locality, she illuminates the surprisingly pervasive role of data in our daily thoughts and lives.
Book Synopsis Everyday Use by : Hephzibah Roskelly
Download or read book Everyday Use written by Hephzibah Roskelly and published by . This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brief and accessible, this rhetoric teaches students to read closely, critically, and rhetorically, and to write effectively to achieve their rhetorical goals. Everyday Use answers the basic question, "What is rhetoric?" It shows rhetoric as set of activities -- reading, writing, speaking, listening -- that all intellectually engaged people participate in every day. And it shows that a knowledge of rhetoric is essential in understanding how written and spoken texts influence thought and action every day, in private and in public forums, for good or ill. By demystifying rhetoric and rescuing it from common public misconceptions, Everyday Use equips students to be effective communicators in the academic world and in everyday life. - Publisher.
