Book Synopsis The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books by : Jennifer Miller
Download or read book The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books written by Jennifer Miller and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-05-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books, Jennifer Miller identifies an archive of over 150 English-language children’s picture books that explicitly represent LGBTQ+ identities, expressions, and issues. This archive is then analyzed to explore the evolution of LGBTQ+ characters and content from the 1970s to the present. Miller describes dominant tropes that emerge in the field to analyze historical shifts in representational practices, which she suggests parallel larger sociocultural shifts in the visibility of LGBTQ+ identities. Additionally, Miller considers material constraints and possibilities affecting the production, distribution, and consumption of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books from the 1970s to the present. This foundational work defines the field of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books thoroughly, yet accessibly. In addition to laying the groundwork for further research, The Transformative Potential of LGBTQ+ Children’s Picture Books presents a reading lens, critical optimism, used to analyze the transformative potential of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books. Many texts remain attached to heteronormative family forms and raced and classed models of success. However, by considering what these books put into the world, as well as problematic aspects of the world reproduced within them, Miller argues that LGBTQ+ children’s picture books are an essential world-making project and seek to usher in a transformed world as well as a significant historical archive that reflects material and representational shifts in dominant and subcultural understandings of gender and sexuality.

Book Synopsis Photography in Educational Research by : Susie Miles
Download or read book Photography in Educational Research written by Susie Miles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography in education involves the use of photographs to engage research participants in representing and reflecting upon their own experiences. This book explores how photographic images can be used in a range of educational settings in different cultural contexts, as a method of facilitating communication and reflection on significant issues in people’s lives. It considers the opportunities that are created through the use of photography as a visual research method, and addresses fundamental issues about identity, representation, participation and power which underlie participatory practice. Bringing together a variety of international contributors, chapters describe and reflect on experiences of using photography, situating them in a critical framework to provoke informed applications of these processes. The collection adopts a broad view of education, considering voices of people of different ages who are at various stages on their educational journey, or who have diverse perspectives on their educational experience: young British Muslims, trainee science teachers, audiologists, teachers of deaf children, mobile teacher educators working in conflict zones, young people with disabilities, community workers and school students, in countries as diverse as Australia, Burma, Cyprus, England, Ethiopia, Kenya, the United States and Sudan. Photography in Educational Research will be key reading for educational researchers, postgraduate students studying research methods and ethics, tutors working in higher education, and individual practitioners and teams within schools interested in young people’s voices, ethnicity, mental health, global citizenship and school development.

Book Synopsis Social Change in the History of British Education by : Joyce Goodman
Download or read book Social Change in the History of British Education written by Joyce Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides an overall review and analysis of the history of education and of its key research priorities in the British context. It investigates the extent to which education has contributed historically to social change in Britain, how it has itself been moulded by society, and the needs and opportunities that remain for further research in this general area. Contributors review the strengths and limitations of the historical literature on social change in British education over the past forty years, ascertain what this literature tells us about the relationship between education and social change, and map areas and themes for future historical research. They consider both formal and informal education, different levels and stages of the education system, the process and experience of education, and regional and national perspectives. They also engage with broader discussions about theory and methodology. The collection covers a large amount of historical territory, from the sixteenth century to the present, including the emergence of the learned professions, the relationship between society and the economy, the role of higher technological education, the historical experiences of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the social significance of teaching and learning, and the importance of social class, gender, ethnicity, and disability. It involves personal biography no less than broad national and international movements in its considerations. This book will be a major contribution to research as well as a general resource in the history and historiography of education in Britain.
