Book excerpt: What if we stopped avoiding the difficult people in our lives and committed to simply loving everybody? What happens when we give away love like we're made of it? In Everybody, Always, Bob Goff's joyful New York Times bestselling follow-up to Love Does, you'll discover the secret to living without fear, constraint, or worry. Bob teaches us that the path toward the outsized, unfettered, liberated existence we all long for is found in one simple truth: love people, even the difficult ones, without distinction and without limits. In Everybody, Always, Bob shows us the simple truths about life that have the power to shift our mindset forever: Jesus uses our blind spots to reveal himself to us It's easy to love kind, lovely, humble people, but you have to tackle fear in order to love people who are difficult What we do with our love will become the conversations we have with God Dark and scary places are filled with beautiful people who need our unconditional love Extravagant love has extraordinary power to change lives, including our own Driven by Bob's trademark storytelling, this book reveals the wisdom Bob learned--often the hard way--about what it means to love without inhibition, insecurity, or restriction. From finding the right friends to discovering the upside of failure, Everybody, Always points the way to embodying love by doing the unexpected, the intimidating, the seemingly impossible. Whether losing his shoes while skydiving solo or befriending a Ugandan witch doctor, Bob steps into life with a no-limits embrace of others that is as infectious as it is extraordinarily ordinary. Everybody, Always reveals how we can do the same.

Book excerpt: Spiritual disciplines are often viewed primarily as a means to draw us closer to God. While these practices do deepen and enrich our "vertical" relationship with God, Kyle David Bennett argues that they were originally designed to positively impact our "horizontal" relationships--with neighbors, strangers, enemies, friends, family, animals, and even the earth. Bennett explains that this "horizontal" dimension has often been overlooked or forgotten in contemporary discussions of the spiritual disciplines. This book offers an alternative way of understanding the classic spiritual disciplines that makes them relevant, doable, and meaningful for everyday Christians. Bennett shows how the disciplines are remedial practices that correct the malformed ways we do everyday things, such as think, eat, talk, own, work, and rest. Through personal anecdotes, engagement with Scripture, and vivid cultural references, he invites us to practice the spiritual disciplines wholesale and shows how changing the way we do basic human activities can bring healing, renewal, and transformation to our day-to-day lives and the world around us.

This book began as her personal journal, her own attempt to discover her place in the world through analyzing experiences, relationships, and spiritual encounters. It evolved into a book—and then the beloved Hablando Sola brand with more than 2,100,000 Facebook likes—full of thoughtful questions and meaningful reflections that has inspired and uplifted hundreds of thousands of young people in Latin America. Now the book that has sold more than 200,000 copies in Latin America is available in English, coinciding with the brand’s expansion into the United States as Talking to Myself. Zacarías guides readers on their own self-discovery journeys through simple, accessible musings and anecdotes. “How do you learn to love yourself?” she asks and then continues, “I think it’s impossible if you don’t know who you are.” The ensuing chapters include Love, Fear, God, Art, Beauty, Depression, Happiness, and more, tackling a wide range of subjects with one goal in mind: helping readers to better know themselves, that they might better love themselves. This book comes alongside you like a big sister who’s been there and done that and can impart her wisdom between warm hugs and a few laughs. It will be of special interest to the 54 million Hispanic Americans in the United States because of Zacarías’s following in Latin America, but its honesty, warmth, and wisdom will give it broad appeal, particularly to young women.

Book excerpt: Now a New York Times Bestseller As a college student he spent 16 days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. As a father he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. He made friends in Uganda, and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan consul. He pursued his wife for three years before she agreed to date him. His grades weren't good enough to get into law school, so he sat on a bench outside the Dean's office for seven days until they finally let him enroll. Bob Goff has become something of a legend, and his friends consider him the world's best-kept secret. Those same friends have long insisted he write a book. What follows are paradigm shifts, musings, and stories from one of the world's most delightfully engaging and winsome people. What fuels his impact? Love. But it's not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings. Bob's love takes action. Bob believes Love Does. When Love Does, life gets interesting. Each day turns into a hilarious, whimsical, meaningful chance that makes faith simple and real. Each chapter is a story that forms a book, a life. And this is one life you don't want to miss. Love Does has a kind of 'north star' effect that will push you to refocus your life and energy on what is most significant. Mostly, the balloons on the cover. The rest was pretty good too. Lots of stories about how God helps us." --Aedan, Asher and Skye Peterson ages 13, 12 and 9 "This may look like a book. It's not. It is an invitation to enter into the greatest adventure you have ever known--your life as it was meant to be lived. Book excerpt: A lot of professors give talks titled 'The Last Lecture'. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave, 'Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams', wasnt about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

It investigates the spatial dimension of erotic life through considerations of Bohemian love, the gay city and the ways in which the urban landscape and everyday life have become sexualized - issues which have become central to the emergence of `queer′ as a new form of gender politics and more general questions of sexual citizenship. Drawing on the work of feminists, sociologists and cultural theorists, this book contains a wide-ranging and accessible set of contributions to contemporary debates on sexuality, love and eroticism. Love & Eroticism is simultaneously published as volume 15, issue 3-4 of Theory, Culture & Society.

Book excerpt: With her customary accuracy, Jane Gardam reveals the extraordinariness of ordinary people as she deals with the pangs of love- fulfilled or hopeless, sexual or spiritual, tortured or hilarious- in these eleven stories. Paraded here are ladies with a 'thing' about vicars, strange events happening in ornate downstairs lavatories (and in ornate upstairs ones), and the English abroad, desperate and dotty. The glum and impossible Edna haunts the supermarket- and dispenses an unlikely kiss of life. The younger sister of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid declares her sibling 'very silly' and turns her story on its tail, an old maid forms a curious liason with a tramp, and small moments of temptation fill hotel rooms as histories glance briefly off each other.

Book excerpt: As indicated in the title, this is a study in the historical evolution of the major faiths of mankind and their religious beliefs. It is not a study to prove who is right and who is wrong. As such it certainly has a different approach to the subject. The layout of the subject may not depict the usual traditional approach observed in religious works, but it certainly preserves its true historical background. This work, therefore, is mainly historical in its essence. The subject matter of this discourse is not only interesting but it is also informative and educational. When we talk about the history of mankind we also talk about the origin and the development of their religious beliefs, their culture and the social values of their life. Theology, a critical study of religious ideas, a dogmatic approach, has often, in past, been a source of divisions among the people of diverse beliefs and cultures. This planet would have been a much better place to live in, for all human beings, if man had learned to appreciate and respect the religious and cultural beliefs of the people different than those in which he had been brought up. Rather then finding differences and keeping alive hatred and dislike for other faiths and beliefs he would have done better if he had understood the common purpose that exists behind all faiths. Much has been said and written about the conduct of people who in the name of religion have de-stabilized the world peace. The dangers of such religious polemics are evident in many areas of our planate. In the pluralistic world of today no one faith has the monopoly of the Truth. People are Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists or Muslims out of their sincere convictions. Endowed with the gift of intellect, and historical inheritance, people have chosen different paths and ways in their search for the Truth. We all eat the food grown in the same soil, drink water from the same springs and breathe the air from the same atmosphere. Even while holding to our own religious views, there is no reason why we can not respect and appreciate the beliefs of the others. An old Japanese saying goes like this: "There are many paths at the foot of a mountain, but the view of the moon is the same at the top." I would consider myself rewarded if, through this work, I can arouse enough interest in the minds of my readers to know and appreciate the fundamental teachings of all religions, namely the understanding of God, the Creator of this Universe, and Man's relationship with Him.
