These eloquent, contemplative works focus on subtle moments often overlooked in modern life-lovers walking hand-in-hand under the stars, an old woman mending worn robes, and children sledding down fresh snow. Book excerpt: Haiku is both a type of poetic pattern and a way of experiencing the world. This short, 17-syllable form, usually written in three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable count, focuses our attention on a single, insightful moment. Closely tied to the Japanese aesthetic of Yugen and the spirituality of Buddhism, Haiku looks deceptively simple, yet can take years to master. A well-executed haiku is rooted in the physical world of our senses, yet suggests something deeper, often evoking the mysterious, transitory nature of all existence. Everyday Haiku by Paul Jacobs was written over the last decade or so just as he experienced them in the time and place where they happened. Most of them occurred while he was hiking or simply sitting in Irvine Regional Park, a few miles outside of Orange, California. The stunning photographs included in this book are a collection of his favorites from those he had taken over the last 60 years in various places around the world. They were intended to resonate rather than to illustrate the poems and are simply in the spirit of Zen. Everyday Haiku celebrates the timeliness of the present moment. It shows to readers and poetry lovers a closer bond between oneself and the immediacy of the natural world. Inspired by the art of Zen, a Japanese form of Buddhism, it also presents to readers a way to look deeper into one’s own experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve is a father and husband who decided to start running again after a three-year hiatus. He took his Chow Chow-Shiba Inu mix dog, Koa, along with him on his daily runs. Within a month, he started to connect with nature, appreciating the birds, trees, flowers, ocean, sun rises and sunsets. Then, he started to form haiku poems in his mind as he ran. His lovefest for nature and haikus led him to get carried away with his running. Before he knew it, he was running eight, nine and ten miles. He started running in July 2011 and is still running in 2013 with Koa and writing haiku poems every day. His life has become more spiritual than before. Steve has three more books slated for publication in 2013, but he hopes to publish a minimum of five books this year. His book has been well-received by its first reviewers, giving him 4 and 5-star ratings. Steve's poetry was deeply personal to him and he hopes that you'll savor every line and every haiku slowly, like fine wine. He wants you to take a moment and feel the message, what does it mean to you? Can you relate to it somewhere in your life's journey thus far? Mostly, Steve hopes his words will help you heal spiritually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese poetry form of haiku is perfect for capturing moments of time and reflecting on life. Using it to ponder life's deepest questions and universal truth is something poets have been doing for centuries. During the year of 2020, writing haiku each day helped me stay grounded in a world that seemed to be falling apart. It gave me a moment to be present and think about what I value, what is important to me, and how to give back to others. I hope this book does the same and helps you appreciate all the amazing miracles-big and small-that exist in the world. In this book, you will find over 100 haiku and five mini essays centered around Mindfulness, Compassion, Gratitude, Love & Loss, and Give & Forgive. Each chapter ends with questions for your own reflection or inspiration. Feel free to ponder them at your leisure. Your purchase of this book helps support me (Anthony Nanfito) as an independent author, as well as my podcast: The Haiku Pond. The first season of the podcast features selected haiku from this book as well as haiku submitted by other poets. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of original haiku from a preeminent Native American poet and novelist. Favor of Crows is a collection of new and previously published original haiku poems over the past forty years. Gerald Vizenor has earned a wide and devoted audience for his poetry. In the introductory essay the author compares the imagistic poise of haiku with the early dream songs of the Anishinaabe, or Chippewa. Vizenor concentrates on these two artistic traditions, and by intuition he creates a union of vision, perception, and natural motion in concise poems; he creates a sense of presence and at the same time a naturalistic trace of impermanence. The haiku scenes in Favor of Crows are presented in chapters of the four seasons, the natural metaphors of human experience in the tradition of haiku in Japan. Vizenor honors the traditional practice and clever tease of haiku, and conveys his appreciation of Matsuo Basho and Yosa Buson in these two haiku scenes, "calm in the storm / master basho soaks his feet /water striders," and "cold rain / field mice rattle the dishes / buson's koto." Vizenor is inspired by the sway of concise poetic images, natural motion, and by the transient nature of the seasons in native dream songs and haiku. "The heart of haiku is a tease of nature, a concise, intuitive, and an original moment of perception," he declares in the introduction to Favor of Crows. "Haiku is visionary, a timely meditation and an ironic manner of creation. That sense of natural motion in a haiku scene is a wonder, the catch of impermanence in the seasons."
