Book excerpt: On their farm nestled in upstate New York, veterinarian Austin McKenzie and his wife Madeline keep themselves busy looking after ailing farm animals and pets in poor health. But while they may be able to mend creatures great and small, they have yet to find a cure for murder. During his career, Austin has met several snakes—and none of them was meaner than turkey farmer Lewis O’Leary. So it’s no surprise when O’Leary’s dead body is found in a dumpster. Circumstantial evidence points to a turkey feed salesman, whom police have arrested. But the doc has a feeling the guy was framed. To prove it, though, Austin will have to narrow down the list of Old Man O’Leary’s enemies—but how, with so many? His family is ready to gobble up any inheritance from the turkey farm; an animal rights activist wanted his head on a platter; and this case will be anything but gravy. “A savvy sleuth with a kind heart.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

Book excerpt: This is the book that teachers and others working with Turkish speaking children and young people have long needed. The author's academic rigor combined with his insider's view of the communities' families, culture and work patterns affords readers real understanding of a community which has developed its own diaspora over the last half century but about which there is little research and scant learning support. Part 1 outlines the backgrounds of the Turkish speakers - their immigration and employment patterns - and examines their community and economic activities in some depth. Part 2 is devoted to the children's language and the ways in which they use and acquire both Turkish and English in a range of real-life situations in their families and family businesses, and in their communities. From his analysis of these processes the author identifies what teachers need to know to develop these children's language skills further at school and so enhance their academic attainment. "Talking Turkey" will be essential reading for all those who work with Turkish speakers and will be of interest to teacher trainers, educational policy makers and to the Turkish communities.

Miles away . . . Nate's cousin Olivia Sharp--herself a detective--hears about the missing turkey on TV. Before he can say gobble, gobble, Olivia appears on Nate's doorstep; and just as quickly, she's off hunting for the feathered creature. It looks as if Nate can sit this case out . . . until he turns on his TV and a picture of the turkey flashes on. Suddenly Nate is moving just as fast! Now Nate, Olivia, Sludge, and Claude are all in pursuit of the turkey. Are two (or more) detectives better than one? From talking turkey to stalking turkey--will every detective come out a winner?

Book excerpt: Tenth Legion has long been considered the greatest - and most hilarious - book on turkey hunting. Yet until now it was only available in a privately published edition. Many people who hunt turkeys do so with an attention to detail, a regard for strategy, tactics, and operations, and a disregard for personal comfort and convenience that ranks second only to war. As for all cultists, it never occurs to them that they may be anachronisms. Supremely unconscious of the rest of the world, blind and deaf to logic and reason, they walk along their different roads in step to the music of their different drums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside story—from the organizer himself--of the largest unrecovered cash haul in history. This full account brings readers behind the heist memorialized in Goodfellas, a crime that has baffled law enforcement for decades. From Henry Hill himself, The Lufthansa Heist is the last book he worked on before his 2012 death. On December 11, 1978, a daring armed robbery rocked Kennedy Airport, resulting in the largest unrecovered cash haul in world history, totaling six million dollars. The perpetrators were never apprehended and thirteen people connected to the crime were murdered in homicides that, like the crime itself, remain unsolved to this day. The burglary has fascinated the public for years, dominating headlines around the globe due to the story’s unending ravel of mysteries that baffled the authorities. One of the organizers of the sensational burglary, Henry Hill, who passed away in 2012, in collaboration with Daniel Simone, has penned an unprecedented “tell-all” about the robbery with never-before-unveiled details, particulars only known to an insider. In 2013, this infamous criminal act again flared up in the national news when five reputed gangsters were charged in connection to the robbery. This latest twist lends the project an extraordinary sense of timing, and the legal proceedings of the newly arrested suspects will unfold over the next year, continuing to keep the Lufthansa topic in the news.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ethnographic exploration of the meaning of national citizenship in the context of globalization The American Passport in Turkey explores the diverse meanings and values that people outside of the United States attribute to U.S. citizenship, specifically those who possess or seek to obtain U.S. citizenship while residing in Turkey. Özlem Altan-Olcay and Evren Balta interviewed more than one hundred individuals and families and, through their narratives, shed light on how U.S. citizenship is imagined, experienced, and practiced in a setting where everyday life is marked by numerous uncertainties and unequal opportunities. When a Turkish mother wants to protect her daughter's modern, secular upbringing through U.S. citizenship, U.S. citizenship, for her, is a form of insurance for her daughter given Turkey's unknown political future. When a Turkish-American citizen describes how he can make a credible claim of national belonging because he returned to Turkey yet can also claim a cosmopolitan Western identity because of his U.S. citizenship, he represents the popular identification of the West with the United States. And when a natural-born U.S. citizen describes with enthusiasm the upward mobility she has experienced since moving to Turkey, she reveals how the status of U.S. citizenship and "Americanness" become valuable assets outside of the States. Offering a corrective to citizenship studies where discussions of inequality are largely limited to domestic frames, Altan-Olcay and Balta argue that the relationship between inequality and citizenship regimes can only be fully understood if considered transnationally. Additionally, The American Passport in Turkey demonstrates that U.S. global power not only reveals itself in terms of foreign policy but also manifests in the active desires people have for U.S. citizenship, even when they do not intend to live in the United States. These citizens, according to the authors, create a new kind of empire with borders and citizen-state relations that do not map onto recognizable political territories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkish society is frequently accused of having amnesia. It has been said that there is no social memory in Turkey before Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded modern Turkey after World War I. Indeed, in 1923, the newly founded Turkish Republic committed to a modernist future by erasing the memory of its Ottoman past. Now, almost eighty years after the establishment of the republic, the grandchildren of the founders have a different relationship with history. New generations make every effort to remember, record, and reconcile earlier periods. The multiple, personalized representations of the past that they have recovered allow contemporary Turkish citizens to create alternative identities for themselves and their communities. Unlike its futuristic and homogenizing character at the turn of the twentieth century, Turkish nationalism today uses memory to generate varied narratives for the nation and its minority groups. Contributors to this volume come from such diverse disciplines as anthropology, comparative literature, and sociology, but they share a common understanding of contemporary Turkey and how its different representations of the past have become metaphors through which individuals and groups define their cultural identity and political position. They explore the ways people challenge, reaffirm, or transform the concepts of history, nation, homeland, and “Republic” through acts of memory, effectively demonstrating that memory can be both the basis of cultural reproduction and a form of resistance.

Book excerpt: In the late 1920s until 1965 Maplecrest Turkey Farms of Wellman, Iowa, was a leading pioneer in the modern commercial turkey industry. A. C. Gingerich, an Amish-Mennonite farmer and entrepreneur, was able to successfully develop his business from a handful of turkeys to make Wellman both a “Turkey Capital/Center of the World” and have it uniquely proclaimed as “Thanksgiving Town” by the late 1930s. The Maplecrest brand was known for its premium quality and was available, by name, in leading restaurants also by the late 1930s. This historical book looks at how the modern turkey industry was able to initiate itself largely through knowledge of disease prevention through sanitation means. Some chapters include topics such as how the turkeys were raised, processed and marketed, especially to Eastern markets, e.g. New York City, Boston, etc., and a chapter on World War II discusses the major role that Maplecrest played in producing not only turkeys, but beef, pork and lamb for the armed forces.
