While depression may strike at any time, studies show that women are particularly vulnerable during their childbearing years. Despite the increasing awareness of this deeply concerning issue, many studies and health professionals still continue to focus almost solely on postpartum depression, ignoring the fact that depression is just as likely to affect women while they're trying to conceive and during pregnancy. Now, in this comprehensive, empathetic, and candid book, Dr. Ruta Nonacs, a senior member of the Center for Women's Mental Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and mother of two children herself, confronts the seldom talked-about issues of pregnancy-related depression, including: Becoming pregnant while being treated for depression Infertility-related depression and the effects of fertility treatments Understanding the effects of maternal depression on spouses and family Postpartum depression and anxiety Nonacs also addresses the many complicated issues in a woman's life during the span of her childbearing years -- education, career, marriage, childbearing, and child rearing -- and discusses the ways in which depression often takes hold during potentially stressful times. Nonacs identifies many of the symptoms of depression associated with pregnancy and discusses treatments and cures, as well as ways to minimize effects of depression on family and friends. Straightforward and honest, as well as emotionally sensitive and deeply moving, A Deeper Shade of Blue gives every woman who has suffered from pregnancy-related depression the information she needs to get the best care for herself, during pregnancy and beyond.

Book excerpt: With a cast of characters that wouldn't be out of place in a Victorian novel, Chocolate Wars tells the story of the great chocolatier dynasties, through the prism of the Cadburys. Chocolate was consumed unrefined and unprocessed as a rather bitter, fatty drink for the wealthy elite until the late 19th century, when the Swiss discovered a way to blend it with milk and unleashed a product that would conquer every market in the world. Thereafter, one of the great global business rivalries unfolded as each chocolate maker attempted to dominate its domestic market and innovate new recipes for chocolate that would set it apart from its rivals. The contest was full of dramatic contradictions: The Cadburys were austere Quakers who found themselves making millions from an indulgent product; Kitty Hershey could hardly have been more flamboyant yet her husband was moved by the Cadburys tradition of philanthropy. Each was a product of their unique time and place yet they shared one thing: they want to make the best chocolate in the world.

In this discussion of Psalm 73, Bill Crowder examines Asaph’s story of pain, tears, loss, and disappointment. Encouraging you to focus on the condition of your heart rather than the perception of your eyes, It’s Not Fair shows how you can restore your confidence in God and trust Him by focusing on His goodness rather than your circumstances.

Book excerpt: For centuries, dyed fabrics ranked among the most expensive objects of the ancient Mediterranean world, fetching up to 20 times their weight in gold. Huge fortunes were made from and lost to them, and battles were fought over control of the industry. The few who knew the dyes’ complex secrets carefully guarded the valuable knowledge. The Rarest Blue tells the amazing story of tekhelet, or hyacinth blue, the elusive sky-blue dye mentioned 50 times in the Hebrew Bible. The Minoans discovered it; the Phoenicians stole the technique; Cleopatra adored it; and Jews—obeying a Biblical commandment to affix a single thread of the radiant color to the corner of their garments—risked their lives for it. But with the fall of the Roman Empire, the technique was lost to the ages. Then, in the nineteenth century, a marine biologist saw a fisherman smearing his shirt with snail guts, marveling as the yellow stains turned sky blue. But what was the secret? At the same time, a Hasidic master obsessed with reviving the ancient tradition posited that the source wasn’t a snail at all but a squid. Bitter fighting ensued until another rabbi discovered that one of them was wrong—but had an unscrupulous chemist deliberately deceived him? Baruch Sterman brilliantly recounts the complete, amazing story of this sacred dye that changed the color of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement today is a very different world from what it was when I was on the job, with cell cameras, sights and sounds installed in all the patrol cars, the media down on the police, I would have lasted six months before getting fired or maybe even arrested! I have great sympathy for today's cops, especially the uniform guys who, from childhood, were taught by their parent to always try to do the right thing, to think on your feet and never ever back down from those wanting to harm you or your loved ones. My parents told me early on that I should do what I want as long as it's at nobody elses expense. I lived by that rule or at least always tried to. Was I a saint? I wasn't a saint, but I was a crusader. I can honestly say I never ever intentionally physically hurt anyone who didn't deserve getting hurt. Are there bad cops out there? You bet there are. There were bad cops from way back in our history. Cops that took great pleasure in beating people, cops stealing money from drug dealers, cops abusing their power. They will someday regret every action, every cent they stole, and every head they bashed in. That was never me. It sickens me to the point where I can't watch news coverage of cop abuse or corruption. But in defense of the vast majority of good and decent cops, their job is 100 percent tougher than when I fought crime. Hell, I received commodations for doing the same things the new cops are getting fired for. Who in their right mind would want this insane job? But for some there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I worked really hard and followed the light right into the detective unit. When ever do you ever read about an abusive detective? You take the uniform off, dress up in a suit and the public respects you. You're viewed as the elite, more intelligent and you command respect. Does it get any better than that? You bet it does. It's being an he undercover narcotic detective. He hides his badge and blends in with the unmade beds of America. He's backed up with a license to do pretty much anything he wants just as long as he doesn't cross the line. There are no cell phone cameras watching his every move. No one to claim police abuse. In my mind it's the best of the best. This book is a blend of all three of my lives as a cop. Three very different jobs heading for the very same goal. Take the bad guy off the streets and make the people around us as safe as possible. Not everyone who reads this will agree with the way I went about accomplishing that goal. Some will admire me and some won't. But just maybe I was somehow responsible for keeping you and your children alive. You never know. I thank my co-author Dr. Lou Girifalco for encouraging me to write this autobiography. I also want to give thanks to all of you I mention in the book and even though few true names are mentioned, you know who you are. Special thanks to my wife Terry for putting up with me through those tough years. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed doing it.
