Book excerpt: It's been two months since Lizzie's daddy disappeared due to the awful Depression. Lizzie's praying he'll return to Bittersweet, Alabama, for her birthday. It won't feel special without him, what with Lizzie's Mama being so sad she won't even talk and the bank nipping at their heels for a mortgage payment. Daddy expected her to be the best at any cost. But Lizzie claims "that cost me my top grades and my best friend. It's dumped 'em both square into Erin's hands. She's gone batty if she thinks she's gonna get me carted off to the orphanage." While Lizzie waits, she gets comfort writing in her journal. As time passes, she can only picture her daddy's face by opening her locket. If others can get by, why did her daddy leave? If he doesn't return, how can she overcome the same obstacles that drove him away?

Book Synopsis The Day after Yesterday by : Joe Wallace
Download or read book The Day after Yesterday written by Joe Wallace and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deft combination of narrative and portraiture that breaks the taboo around dementia, replacing the fear and futility with empathy and nuance. A graphic designer, a writer, a public servant, a retired PhD, a 29-year-old with early-onset Alzheimer’s. These are just some of the 50 million people living with dementia who share their deeply personal stories with Joe Wallace in The Day after Yesterday, a powerful collection of portraits and personal stories that humanizes the millions of people living with the disease. Each story in this poignant volume offers a unique and powerful lesson—not just about how to live with a terminal illness, but how to do so with resilience and dignity. Dementia is often a taboo subject with limited public awareness or discourse. A diagnosis can become a mechanism for segregating those affected from society, making it easier to see only the label and not the individual, which, in turn, makes it easier to ignore the burgeoning health crisis and the individuals themselves. But as one man told Wallace, “Don’t believe the narrative that life is over. I want my voice to help get people to treat us the same as they did before we got the diagnosis. We may change some, but we are the same people!” More than a visual representation, The Day after Yesterday’s compassionate portraits capture the dignity and richness of each individual, destigmatizing dementia and enabling a loving, respectful, and much-needed conversation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pride, murderer, encroachers of dreams, encroaching on human rights, encroaching on other’s dreams and encroaching on other’s future. Egoism devours man’s hearts – me first, me second, and me to the last. There is no space or position left for others to occupy. These are men who are ready to take their brother’s birthright for a common porridge. But forget not: teach not a man the taste of milk. Milk he will not seek or to rest, but busy he will always be. But once learned, that he will and will always seek. An ignorant man can be happy in his ignorance and accept all kinds of cheating, but the very day he acquires knowledge, then he will not let go even a single cheat. Knowledge brings choice, choice brings desire, and desire leads to seeking. For that which the knowledge lacks, one seeks not.
Book Synopsis Everyday Life under Communism and After by : Tibor Valuch
Download or read book Everyday Life under Communism and After written by Tibor Valuch and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By providing a survey of consumption and lifestyle in Hungary during the second half of the twentieth century, this book shows how common people lived during and after tumultuous regime changes. After an introduction covering the late 1930s, the study centers on the communist era, and goes on to describe changes in the post-communist period with its legacy of state socialism. Tibor Valuch poses a series of questions. Who could be called rich or poor and how did they live in the various periods? How did living, furnishings, clothing, income, and consumption mirror the structure of the society and its transformations? How could people accommodate their lifestyles to the political and social system? How specific to the regime was consumption after the communist takeover, and how did consumption habits change after the demise of state socialism? The answers, based on micro-histories, statistical data, population censuses and surveys help to understand the complexities of daily life, not only in Hungary, but also in other communist regimes in east-central Europe, with insights on their antecedents and afterlives.

Book Synopsis After the Tsunami by : Annemarie Samuels
Download or read book After the Tsunami written by Annemarie Samuels and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused immense destruction and over 170,000 deaths in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The disaster spurred large-scale social and political changes in Aceh, including the intensified implementation of shari‘a law and an end to the long separatist conflict. After the Tsunami explores Acehnese survivors’ experiences of the deadly waves and the subsequent reconstruction process through the stories they tell about the disaster. Narratives, author Annemarie Samuels argues, are both a window onto the process of remaking everyday life and an essential component of it. Building on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, Samuels shows how the everyday work of recovery is indispensable for any large-scale reconstruction effort to succeed. Recovery is an ambiguous process in which grief remains as life goes on, where optimism and disappointment, remembering and forgetting, structural poverty and the rhetoric of success are often intertwined in individual and social worlds. Such paradoxes are key and form a thread through the five chapters of the book. Addressing post-disaster reconstruction from the survivors’ perspectives opens up space for criticism of post-disaster governance without reducing the discussion of recovery to top-down interventions. Individual histories, emotions, creativity, and ways of being in the world, the author argues, inform the remaking of worlds as much as social, political, and cultural transformations do. After the Tsunami is a provocative and highly significant contribution to studies of humanitarian aid and disaster, psychological anthropology, narrative studies, and scholarly studies of Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Its elegant style, pointed theorizing, and moving ethnographic descriptions will draw readers into Acehnese lifeworlds and politics. Its narratives attest to Acehnese ways of living with loss, within and across a history of colonial and postcolonial violence and suffering and a present of political uncertainty and hope.
