Book excerpt: Summer, 1940. Britain is at war, and her brave fighter pilots attempt to keep the enemy at bay. To escape horrid memories and her managing mother, Pamela Allison leaves London and accepts a job from her aunt, working in the family store in the village. The last thing Pamela wants is a man, especially one who reminds her of her brutal, now deceased husband. Enter Michael Stedman, a Spitfire pilot based at the Biggin Hill airbase. Depressed and a little drunk after the death of his best friend, he doesn’t expect to meet a beautiful woman, but something about Pamela tempts him. He’s not looking for anything permanent since a pilot’s life is fraught with danger, just a little feminine company to take his mind off the war. Kisses. Caresses. Walks in the moonlight. London is under siege. Bombs drop every night and the danger increases for everyone. Michael and Pamela’s relationship deepens and they become lovers but gossip and the past intrude and threaten to destroy everything, including her good reputation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Kynaston's history of post-war Britain has so far taken us from the radically reforming Labour governments of the late 1940s in Austerity Britain, through the growing prosperity of Family Britain's more placid 1950s, to the very cusp of the 1960s and the coming of a new Zeitgeist in Modernity Britain. The first part, Opening the Box, 1957–59, plotted the main themes of the new spirit of the age. Now, in part two – A Shake of the Dice, 1959–62 – through a rich haul of diaries, letters, newspapers and many other sources, Kynaston gets up close to a turbulent era as the speed of social change accelerated. By 1959 consumerism was inexorably taking hold (stripes for Signal toothpaste, flavours for potato crisps), relative economic decline was becoming the staple of political discourse (entry into Europe increasingly seen as our salvation), immigration was turning into an ever-hotter issue (the controversial coming of controls), traditional norms of morality were perceived as under serious threat (Lady Chatterley's Lover freely on sale after the famous case), and traditional working-class culture was changing (wakes weeks in decline, the end of the maximum wage for footballers) even as Coronation Street established itself as a national institution. The greatest shake of the dice, though, concerned urban redevelopment: city centres were being yanked into the age of the motor car, slum clearance was intensified, and the skyline became studded with brutalist high-rise boxes. Some of this transformation was necessary, but too much would destroy communities and leave a harsh, fateful legacy. This profoundly important story of the period of transformation from the old to the brink of a new world is now told brilliantly and in full for the first time.

Book excerpt: “What would happen if the president of the U.S.A. went stark-raving mad?” Back by popular demand, The New York Times calls the 1965 bestselling political thriller by the author of Seven Days in May, “A little too plausible for comfort.” How can one man convince the highest powers in Washington that the President of the United States is dangerously unstable—before it’s too late? Senator Jim MacVeagh is proud to serve his country—and his president, Mark Hollenbach, who has a near-spotless reputation as the vibrant, charismatic leader of MacVeagh’s party and the nation. When Hollenbach begins taking MacVeagh into his confidence, the young senator knows that his star is on the rise. But then Hollenbach starts summoning MacVeagh in the middle of the night to Camp David. There, the president sits in the dark and rants about his enemies, unfurling insane theories about all the people he says are conspiring against him. They would do anything, President Hollenbach tells the stunned senator, to stop him from setting in motion the grand, unprecedented plans he has to make America a great world power once again. MacVeagh comes away from these meetings increasingly convinced that the man he once admired has lost his mind. But what can he do? Who can he tell?
