Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller from the author of The Rules of Magic: In 1980s America, a family copes with their daughter’s terrifying diagnosis. In a lovely old house near the coast of Massachusetts, the Farrells go through the routines of a typical August morning. Eight-year-old Charlie, a junior biologist and dinosaur expert, tries to collect one of his insect specimens. His sister, Amanda, a talented gymnast who at eleven years old is already saving her money to try out for the Olympics, prepares for her last meet of the summer. Ivan, their absent-minded father, is involved with his work as an astronomer. Out in the garden, his wife, Polly, wonders how she can trick her children into eating more zucchini. They are a family as unique and ordinary as any other, but their world will soon be shattered when Amanda is diagnosed with the disease that has been making headlines lately: AIDS. The new and still-mysterious ailment scares them—and their friends and neighbors as well. In an instant, everything that gave their lives meaning is ripped away, and the intimacy that once came so naturally vanishes. Too overcome with grief to turn to each other, Ivan and Polly seek solace elsewhere. Charlie is abandoned by his best friend and, for long stretches at a time, forgotten by his parents. Amanda, who holds on to her dreams so tightly, must somehow find a way to let go. Torn apart by the prospect of their loss, Polly, Ivan, and Charlie must find the courage to come back together again—for Amanda’s sake and for their own. At Risk is an exquisite book about true sorrow and even truer devotion.

Book excerpt: Egyptology in British Culture and Religion shows, for the first time, how Egyptology's development over the century that followed the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script in 1822 can only be understood through its intimate entanglement with the historical, scientific, and religious contentions which defined the era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays brings together many of the world's most distinguished statisticians to discuss a wide array of the most important recent developments in data analysis. The book honors John W. Tukey, one of the most influential statisticians of the twentieth century, on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Contributors, some of them Tukey's former students, use his general theoretical work and his specific contributions to Exploratory Data Analysis as the point of departure for their papers. They cover topics from "pure" data analysis, such as gaussianizing transformations and regression estimates, and from "applied" subjects, such as the best way to rank the abilities of chess players or to estimate the abundance of birds in a particular area. Tukey may be best known for coining the common computer term "bit," for binary digit, but his broader work has revolutionized the way statisticians think about and analyze sets of data. In a personal interview that opens the book, he reviews these extraordinary contributions and his life with characteristic modesty, humor, and intelligence. The book will be valuable both to researchers and students interested in current theoretical and practical data analysis and as a testament to Tukey's lasting influence. The essays are by Dhammika Amaratunga, David Andrews, David Brillinger, Christopher Field, Leo Goodman, Frank Hampel, John Hartigan, Peter Huber, Mia Hubert, Clifford Hurvich, Karen Kafadar, Colin Mallows, Stephan Morgenthaler, Frederick Mosteller, Ha Nguyen, Elvezio Ronchetti, Peter Rousseeuw, Allan Seheult, Paul Velleman, Maria-Pia Victoria-Feser, and Alessandro Villa. Originally published in 1998. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book excerpt: She isn’t sure which is worse—not knowing who she is, or learning the truth. After waking up naked and alone but with no memory of her past, the girl called Ann would rather not know what happened to her. The horrific scars covering her body tell a tale of terror she is sure she would rather forget forever. But to the doctors and benefactors overseeing her care, the possibly sordid details of her past are too enticing to ignore. She is forced to undergo a hypnosis session to unlock the secrets of her past. But once that door is open, it is impossible to close. The memories Ann recall are scant except for one—her name is Eve. And the man who inflicted the damage upon her body gave her that name. One at a time, the doors of Eve’s mind open, and she cannot help but walk through them, revealing horror after horror until she is no longer sure who the real monster is. Fans of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein and Margret Atwood’s Alias Grace are sure to love this blend of Gothic and horror from the pen of Leigh Anderson.

Book excerpt: A B.R.A.G. MEDALLION HONOREE Their discovery could change the world forever… In 1947 a spaceship crashed outside Roswell, New Mexico. The government quickly covered it up. And the most famous UFO event in history remained buried. But what if someone smuggled material out from the crash site and decades later it remained hidden in a secret location? And what if a young teenage girl named Melanie Simpson is the only one who can figure out where? READERS' FAVORITE REVIEW: If you're a fan of TV shows like Stranger Things, you're going to love The Roswell Quest. DJ Schneider masterfully incorporates real-life events to craft an engaging narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Frankie is a normal fourteen-year-old boy, enjoying baseball and pulling pranks until Melanie Simpson moves in next door. She wears sleeveless t-shirts, jeans with holes in the knees, Converse sneakers, and can throw a really mean curveball. None of that stops Frankie from falling for her. But Melanie comes with a mystery; one even she doesn’t know exists. Together, with their friend Beanie, they pull a hoax that goes terribly wrong but leads to an amazing discovery. Mel’s father had been at the UFO crash in Roswell and smuggled some of the alien material out. He is dead now, and it is hidden somewhere. Mel, Frankie, and Beanie work to unravel the clues to where. They soon discover others are after it. The Air Force who wants to keep their cover-up secure, and a Russian Agent desperate to get the alien material for the valuable technology he could deliver to his country. It puts them in terrible danger—and only Melanie can find a way out. The Night Owl said: As a kid growing up with Stand By Me, Goonies, Monster Squad, and other films in that genre it was nice to get that feeling from a book. The UFO Detective said: DJ Schneider is doing something important—capturing the REAL truths about Roswell and delivering them in an entertaining novel. ABOUT ROSWELL: The most famous UFO event in history was the discovery of a crashed flying saucer and alien bodies outside Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. The military put out a press release saying they had recovered a flying disk, but recanted the next day, stating it was a big misunderstanding and just a weather balloon. Over the following days the military from Roswell Army Air Field covered it up—they cordoned off the crash sites, recovered the bodies and debris, threatened the local population into silence, and switched out pieces of a weather balloon for the crash debris in a big press event. And the most important UFO incident in history remained buried for years.

Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of the rich fiction that has emerged from the AIDS crisis. Examining first the ways in which scientific discourse on AIDS has reflected ideologies of gender and sexuality-such as the construction of AIDS as a disease of gay men, part of a battle over masculinity, and thus largely excluding women with AIDS from public attention-the book considers how such discourses have shaped narrative understandings of AIDS. On the one hand, AIDS is seen as an invariably fatal weakening of an individual's bodily defenses, a depiction often used to reconfirm an identification between disease and a weak and vulnerable gayness. On the other hand, AIDS is understood in terms of an epidemic attributable to gay immorality or unnaturalness. The fiction of AIDS depends upon these two narratives, with one major subgenre of AIDS novel presenting narratives of personal illness, decline, and death, and a second focusing on epidemic spread. These novels also question the narrative structures upon which they depend, intervening particularly against the homophobia of those structures, though also sometimes reinforcing it.
