Download or read book Dark Horizons written by Tom Moylan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2003. With essays by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, Dark Horizons focuses on the development of critical dystopia in science fiction at the end of the twentieth century. In these narratives of places more terrible than even the reality produced by the neo-conservative backlash of the 1980s and the neoliberal hegemony of the 1990s, utopian horizons stubbornly anticipate a different and more just world. The top-notch team of contributors explores this development in a variety of ways: by looking at questions of form, politics, the politics of form, and the form of politics. In a broader context, the essays connect their textual and theoretical analyses with historical developments such as September 11th, the rise and downturn of the global economy, and the growth of anti-capitalist movements.

His only wish is to live a peaceful life with his longtime love, Carrie Green, and discontinue his acts as the Hero of Anaisha. But as Legion- an alien species bent on world destruction - reveals more of itself through not only its invasion, but the symbiote that Carrie has vying for control of her body, David realizes that not only is his life in danger, but reality itself. Tears are forming between worlds, and the very fabric of time and space is in jeopardy. David will have to sacrifice his personal ambitions, his pride, and even his relationships in order to find an ancient codex that could be the key to stopping the chaos. In an attempt to understand her Legion symbiote, Carrie Green retreats within herself in an attempt to communicate with Viranda DelaCourte, an entity of Legion that has sought to excommunicate herself from Legion as a whole. But Viranda's goals aren't just to break off from Legion. She also wants to help Carrie find the keys to a prison holding Legion's prisoners from all the worlds it has destroyed. As the world begins to unravel around them, both David and Carrie find themselves at the crossroads of multiple dimensions, with not only their own lives at stake, but the fate of reality itself.
Download or read book Dark Eden written by Chris Beckett and published by Crown. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest’s lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say—and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return. But young John Redlantern will break the laws of Eden, shatter the Family and change history. He will abandon the old ways, venture into the Dark…and discover the truth about their world. Already remarkably acclaimed in the UK, Dark Eden is science fiction as literature; part parable, part powerful coming-of-age story, set in a truly original alien world of dark, sinister beauty--rendered in prose that is at once strikingly simple and stunningly inventive.

Book Synopsis Progressive Dystopia by : Savannah Shange
Download or read book Progressive Dystopia written by Savannah Shange and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco is the endgame of gentrification, where racialized displacement means that the Black population of the city hovers at just over 3 percent. The Robeson Justice Academy opened to serve the few remaining low-income neighborhoods of the city, with the mission of offering liberatory, social justice--themed education to youth of color. While it features a progressive curriculum including Frantz Fanon and Audre Lorde, the majority Latinx school also has the district's highest suspension rates for Black students. In Progressive Dystopia Savannah Shange explores the potential for reconciling the school's marginalization of Black students with its sincere pursuit of multiracial uplift and solidarity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and six years of experience teaching at the school, Shange outlines how the school fails its students and the community because it operates within a space predicated on antiblackness. Seeing San Francisco as a social laboratory for how Black communities survive the end of their worlds, Shange argues for abolition over revolution or progressive reform as the needed path toward Black freedom.
Book Synopsis Text, Image, and the Problem with Perfection in Nineteenth-Century France by : Daniel Sipe
Download or read book Text, Image, and the Problem with Perfection in Nineteenth-Century France written by Daniel Sipe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades after the French Revolution, philosophers, artists, and social scientists set out to chart and build a way to a new world and their speculative blueprints circulated like banknotes in a parallel economy of ideas. Examining representations of ideal societies in nineteenth-century French culture, Daniel Sipe argues that the dream-image of the literary or art-historical utopia does not disappear but rather is profoundly altered by its proximity to the social utopianism of the day. Sipe focuses on this persistent afterlife in utopias ranging from François-René de Chateaubriand’s Amerindian utopia in Atala (1801) to the utopian spoof of J.J. Grandville’s illustrated novel Un autre monde (1844). He proposes a new reading of Etienne Cabet’s seminal utopian novel, Voyage en Icarie (1840) and offers an original perspective on the gendered utopias of technological inspiration that authors such as Charles Barbara and Auguste Villiers de l’Isle-Adam penned in the second half of the century. In addition, Sipe considers utopias or important readings of the century’s rampant utopianism in, among others, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Vigny, Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, and Gustave Courbet. His book provides the historical context for comprehending the significance and implications of this enigmatic afterlife in nineteenth-century utopian art and literature.

Book Synopsis Abortion in Popular Culture by : Brenda Boudreau
Download or read book Abortion in Popular Culture written by Brenda Boudreau and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion in Popular Culture: A Call to Action brings together scholars who examine depictions of abortion in film, television, literature, and social media. By examining texts ranging from classic television series such as Maude and Roseanne and recent films such as Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Unpregnant to dystopian novels and social-media campaigns, the essays analyze narrative styles, rhetorical strategies, and cinematic techniques, all of which shape cultural attitudes toward abortion. They also analyze cultural shifts, including the willingness or reluctance of networks, cable channels, and filmmakers to acknowledge changing trends in reproductive health such as medication abortion and the role that abortion plays in family planning. As a whole, however, the essays argue that popular culture can play a significant role in destigmatizing abortion by including a wider range of narratives and doing so with nuance and empathy. With reproductive rights under attack in the United States, each essay is a call to action for writers, producers, directors, showrunners, authors, and musicians to use their platforms to tell more positive and accurate stories about abortion.
