Book Synopsis Field Study of Air Content Stability in the Slipform Paving Process by :
Download or read book Field Study of Air Content Stability in the Slipform Paving Process written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the impacts of construction on the air content and air-void system structure of Portland cement concrete pavements. The primary intent was to quantify the air content of fresh concrete before and after it has gone through the slipform paver. The air-void system parameters of hardened concrete were then assessed using cast and extracted core specimens. The results of the air content testing on fresh concrete and the concrete cylinder specimens cast in the field suggested that there is some loss of air as the concrete passes through the paver. Laboratory testing performed on cores extracted from the pavement did not provide any conclusive evidence that entrained air is lost during the slipform paving process. In fact, many of the extracted cores had measured air content values that were much higher than the specification requirement. If excessive, this could result in increased permeability and low-strength related issues. Although a rigorous statistical analysis was not performed, the results suggest that the air content testing on fresh concrete is not capturing the true air content of the concrete placed with a slipform paver. The fresh concrete air content is generally lower than the air content measured in the cores.
Book Synopsis Material and Construction Optimization for Prevention of Premature Pavement Distress in PCC Pavements by :
Download or read book Material and Construction Optimization for Prevention of Premature Pavement Distress in PCC Pavements written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Phase I, the research team contacted each of 16 participating states to gather information about concrete and concrete material tests. A preliminary suite of tests to ensure long-term pavement performance was developed. The tests were selected to provide useful and easy-to-interpret results that can be performed reasonably and routinely in terms of time, expertise, training, and cost. The tests examine concrete pavement properties in five focal areas critical to the long life and durability of concrete pavements: (1) workability, (2) strength development, (3) air system, (4) permeability, and (5) shrinkage. The tests were relevant at three stages in the concrete paving process: mix design, preconstruction verification, and construction quality control. In Phase II, the research team conducted field testing in each participating state to evaluate the preliminary suite of tests and demonstrate the testing technologies and procedures using local materials.

Book Synopsis Identifying Incompatible Combinations of Concrete Materials by : Peter C. Taylor
Download or read book Identifying Incompatible Combinations of Concrete Materials written by Peter C. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unexpected interactions between otherwise acceptable ingredients in portland cement concrete are becoming increasingly common as cementitious systems become more and more complex and demands on the systems are more rigorous. Such incompatibilities are exhibited as early stiffening or excessive retardation, potential for uncontrolled early-age cracking, and unstable or unacceptable air-void systems. A number of test methods have been reviewed to assess their usefulness in detecting incompatibility early to help prevent problems with pavements in the field. A protocol has been developed to allow product manufacturers, concrete producers, contractors, and owners to monitor their materials and concrete systems. The protocol is phased to allow relatively simple field ttests to provide early warnings of potential problems and tthen central laboratory tests to support and confirm the field work. This is the first of two volumes. The other volume in the series is: FHWA HRT-06-080, Identifying incompatible combinations of concrete materials, volume II--Test protocol.

Book Synopsis Pore Structure of Cement-Based Materials by : Kalliopi K. Aligizaki
Download or read book Pore Structure of Cement-Based Materials written by Kalliopi K. Aligizaki and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pore Structure of Cement-Based Materials provides a thorough treatment of the experimental techniques used to characterize the pore structure of materials. The text presents the principles and practical applications of the techniques used, organized in an easy-to-follow and uncomplicated manner, providing the theoretical background, the way to analyze experimental data, and the factors affecting the results. The book is the single comprehensive source of the techniques most commonly used for pore structure analysis, covering simple techniques like mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption, to the more sophisticated small-angle scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance. The book is an essential reference text for researchers, users, and students in materials science, applied physics, and civil engineering, who seek a deep understanding of the principles and limitations of the techniques used for pore structure analysis of cement-based materials.

Book Synopsis Non-Destructive Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Structures: Deterioration Processes and Standard Test Methods by : Christiane Maierhofer
Download or read book Non-Destructive Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Structures: Deterioration Processes and Standard Test Methods written by Christiane Maierhofer and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.
Book Synopsis Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing by : Donald J. Janssen
Download or read book Resistance of Concrete to Freezing and Thawing written by Donald J. Janssen and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, aimed at improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, consists of three parts. Part I evaluates parameters affecting the freeze-thaw durability of concrete. A modification of the existing standard of method for determining the durability factor of concrete specimens is proposed, and a new procedure for fundamental transverse frequency (used in durability factor calculations) has been developed. Part II focuses on developing better methods for identifying nondurable aggregates, and has resulted in a rapid new test based on the hydraulic fracture of aggregates. Part III describes field experiments to evaluate the freeze-thaw resistance of a number of specified concrete mixes and the use of sealants to mitigate D-cracking. Preliminary field performance results are presented.
