Book excerpt: The M-5 subsystem provides the aviation commander with a weapon which partially fills the gap between the 7.62mm machine gun and the 2.75-in. folding fin aerial rocket (FFAR). It was most effective against personnel in the the open but it was also effective against sampans, thatched huts, ammunition stroage areas, and weapon positions without overhead cover. It provided suppressive fires up to 1200 meters when employed in areas other than dense jungle. In addition, it was capable of neutralization and destructive fires against soft targets within 700 meters. The M-5 was not effective when immediate reaction was required (escort missions) because of the time delay created by the low muzzle velocity of the projectile. Because of sighting limitations, close-in fires could not be provided safely at ranges over 700 meters unless firing passes were parallel to the front line of friendly ground forces. The M-5 subsystem, although evaluated on armed UH-1B's, is considered a suitable weapon for troop transport helicopters. The present authorization of two M-5 subsystems per airmobile company should be increased to six, three mounted on UH-1B helicopters of the armed platoon, one each on a UH-1D of thr two transport platoons, and one held as a backup. Book excerpt: The 5.56/7.62mm Weapons Comparative Evaluation on the OH-6A helicopter was conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, California, by personnel from the US Army Aviation Systems Test Activity. The objectives of the test were to qualitatively evaluate and compare the 5.56mm and the 7.62mm automatic guns for firing accuracy and effect of the weapons firing on flight characteristics, and to quantitatively evaluate instrument panel and gun-mount vibration levels, cockpit gun-noise levels, and gun-gas levels created by weapons firing. Only minor differences were noted in firing accuracy at ranges of 500 meters or less. A pronounced loss of accuracy was noted with the 5.56mm automatic gun at ranges of 1000 meters and greater. Helicopter reactions were most apparent, for both weapons, during hover firing at a high rate of fire and were more severe with the 7.62mm automatic gun than with the 5.56mm gun. At forward airspeeds, only minor differences in flight characteristics were noted during firing of the weapons. Vibration levels of the instrument panel and gun mount were reduced significantly with installation of the 5.56mm automatic gun. Significant reductions in instrument panel vibration and cockpit noise levels were also noted for both weapons when firing with the doors on as compared to firing with the doors off. (Author).

The capstone of each chapter is the story of the Native American tribe or warrior chief and how that history commends it for the naming of that particular helicopter. David also devotes a chapter to the experiences and memories of Native American veterans who served as pilots or crew members of those eleven aircraft. These are insightful, first-person accounts of their tours of duty in Vietnam and duties in aviation units while stationed there. Over two hundred Native Americans perished in Vietnam, nineteen of whom died while participating in aerial operations. The details of that final mission and loss are included in here, along with a listing of the other fallen warriors. On Warriors’ Wings concludes with a summary of the new Native American named helicopters that came after Vietnam and the progress the US military has made with regards to national recognition of Indigenous veterans.
