Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several researchers have examined the concept of flame stability and there has been little agreement regarding the reasons governing this phenomenon. The experiments described within were devised to establish the dominating stabilization mechanism in lifted flames. Specifically, the flame base of lifted methane-jet diffusion flames were examined through the use of various combinations of synchronized laser-based techniques involving particle image velocimetry (PIV), planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), and Rayleigh scattering. Results indicate the presence of a structure termed a flame. Results involving the gradient in the Rayleigh signal across the flame base, in addition to two-shot CH-PLIF interpretations support the leading-edge flame as a primary stabilization mechanism. The extent of premixing upstream of the flame base has been a major source of disagreement in the past. The simultaneous Rayleigh and CH-PLIF images indicate the base of the lifted flame lies in a region that is within the flammability limits of methane burning in air. Furthermore, the average velocity at the stabilization point is 1.18 m/s (as determined from the simultaneous CH-PLIF and PIV investigation); this value is comparable to three times the laminar burning velocity of methane (~ 3S), thereby supporting previous numerical triple flame simulations. Results from the joint two-shot CH-PLIF and PIV technique show that the flame base velocity is independent of the flow conditions when the flame is stationary during the time separation of the CH-PLIF pulses. Specifically, flames with Re flow conditions. Finally, regions of local extinction -- as indicated by openings in the CH profiles -- were examined. Results from four experiments (simultaneous CH-PLIF and PIV, simultaneous CH-PLIF and OH-PLIF, simultaneous CH-PLIF and Rayleigh scattering, and simultaneous two-shot CH-PLIF and PIV) provide complementary information regarding the role of large-scale fuel vortices in initiat.

Book excerpt: A laminar methane-air diffusion flame is interacted with vortices of various sizes and strengths in order to better understand unsteady stretch and history effects on turbulent flames. The nitrogendiluted fuel stream of a Wolfhard-Parker slot burner is acoustically forced, producing repeatable two-dimensional vortices that strain and curve the flame. Phase locked, planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) diagnostics are used to quantify the response of the OH-radical to the vortex-induced stretch. Acetone PLIF images are used to clarify the relationship between the vortex structure and the flame. The results show that the vortex causes significant variations in the OH layer thickness. In particular, negative strain produces a doubling of the flame thickness. Such large increases in OH layer thickness are not predicted by the laminar flamelet model (LFM) because negative strain rates cannot be simulated using standard counterflow flamelet geometry. Local extinction of the OH layer due to high strain is observed near the flame base. Peak OH mole fraction levels vary considerably more than adiabatic LFM predictions. In particular, the peak OH decreases by a factor of two with downstream distance. This decrease is believed due to dilution of reactants by combustion products formed elsewhere in the flow. A simplified model is proposed, which shows the OH concentration is sensitive to product dilution through the scalar dissipation rate.

Book excerpt: Most practical combustion processes rely on turbulent diffusion flames due to their higher heat release rates when compared to laminar diffusion flames. The higher heat release rates occur because of the increased mixing that results from the flame's interaction with the turbulent flow field. Unfortunately, the turbulent combustion process is very complex; therefore, simplified models have been constructed. Flamelet Theory is a method that characterizes turbulent diffusion flames as a collection of strained, laminar, one-dimensional flamelets. One caveat of this model is the flamelets are assumed to respond quasi-steadily to the applied flow field. The focus of my research has been to elucidate the influence of a time varying flow field on the combustion process. To test the response, the reaction zone of a propane-air counter-flow diffusion flame was subjected to time varying flow fields using speakers. The results of the experiments illustrate a reaction zone that responds quasi-steadily at forcing frequencies up to 50 Hz. Above this threshold, significant departures occur from steady flame behavior. At elevated frequencies, conditions were found where the reaction zone temperature was found to be in phase with the strain rate, signaling a significant deviation from the quasi-steady state assumption. In diffusion flames, the limiting step for the transport of reactants to the flame front is a diffusion process. The time associated with the increasing phase difference is likely a result of the time necessary for reactants to travel through the diffusion layer. As the forcing frequency is increased, the time rate of change of reactants delivered to the edge of the diffusive zone increases; however, a finite amount of time is still necessary for the reactants to diffuse to the flame front. As the forcing frequency increases, this diffusion time becomes larger relative to the cycle time of the oscillation, which in turn shows up as an increasing phase difference. Anot.

Book excerpt: Infrared spectra of atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion flames inhibited by Halons and a few of their potential replacements are measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy. Results are compared to spectra of similar flame systems examined at low pressure. It is shown that for atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion methane/air flames inhibited by CF3Br, CF2H2, and CF4, the two major fluorine-containing combustion products are HF and CF2O. A correlation is shown between flame inhibition efficiency and CF2O formation for atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion flames inhibited by these Halons. For low-pressure premixed flames inhibited by CF3Br, HF appears to be the only fluorine-containing combustion product, even at relative dopant levels 15 times higher than those capable of extinguishing atmospheric pressure counterflow diffusion flames. The results of these experiments illustrate the need for flame inhibitant testing over a wide spectrum of flame conditions, while providing further evidence that for atmospheric pressure inhibition of real fires by Halons, CF2O may be a good indicator of inhibitor efficiency when that inhibition is at least partly accomplished by chemical scavenging of reactive combustion intermediates. jg p.3.
