Book excerpt: To approach the reflection cracking problem in asphalt concrete (AC) overlays systematically the properties of the materials intended to be used in an interlayer stress absorbing composite (ISAC) system were first identified. Various thermal/structural models and laboratory equipment were used for this purpose. A number of woven and nonwoven geotextiles were selected and tested for their engineering properties such as tensile strength, initial modulus, modulus at failure, and percent shrinkage. Several samples of rubber asphalt were prepared by blending different ratios of crumb rubber with various types and ratios of asphalt cements at 400 deg F. These rubber asphalts were tested at different temperatures and the effects of temperature and rate of deformation on their stiffness were evaluated. An ISAC layer was fabricated in the laboratory using the materials considered appropriate. Testing equipment was developed to evaluate the interfacial shear strength and laboratory testing was performed to determine the shear strength of the fabricated ISAC layer under an AC overlay. The ISAC layer was evaluated for its effectiveness against reflection cracking. A laboratory pavement section with an AC overlay over a jointed portland cement concrete slab was constructed and placed in an environmental chamber. A mechanical device was used to simulate thermal strain in the slab and the joint was opened and closed at an extremely slow rate. The testing was conducted at 30 deg F and deterioration in the overlay was monitored using a sensitive LVDT device. The results from the laboratory evaluation testing program indicated that the ISAC layer was highly effective in preventing reflection cracking in a 2.5-in. AC overlay. When compared to a control test section and a section using a commercially available reflection cracking control material, the ISAC layer provided for superior performance. A field pavement test section utilizing the ISAC layer was constructed in the Summer of 1994 and field evaluation is ongoing.

Y. Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to establish the technical standard system of an interlayer stress absorbing composite sticker (ISACS), technical indexes including thickness, mass per unit area, tensile force, and corresponding elongation rate, performance after thermal aging test, and low-temperature flexibility were developed based on the study of relevant waterproofing membrane tests and the serviceability of ISACS. Six samples of ISACS made of three different kinds of materials, including glass fiber, polypropylene, and nonwoven geotextile were tested. The results showed that ISACS made of polypropylene has too high % elongation and very poor thermal aging capacity, ISACS made of nonwoven geotextile has too low a tensile strength, while ISACS made of glass fiber presented very good mechanical and thermal properties. Therefore, it was concluded that glass fiber is especially suitable for ISACS among these three kinds of materials. A technical requirement was also developed based on the above test results and reference to the standards of waterproofing membranes.

Book excerpt: This study deals with the design of a composite material which could effectively alleviate/mitigate the problem of reflection cracking in an AC overlay. After reviewing various case histories and having identified the problem areas in the treatments currently in use, a composite material consisting of two geotextile layers containing a thin viscoelastic rubber asphalt layer named, "Interlayer Stress Absorbing Composite (ISAC)" was proposed. To approach the design problem of the ISAC system effectively properties of the materials intended to be used in the system were first identified. Various models and laboratory testing procedures were used for this purpose. A Climate-Materials-Structural (CMS) pavement model was used to establish the pavement temperature range in Northern Illinois. A number of geotextiles were selected and tested for their engineering properties. Several samples of rubber asphalt were prepared by blending various ratios of crumb rubber with different types and ratios of asphalt cements. These materials were tested at different temperatures and the effects of temperature and rate of deformation on stiffness were investigated. After having selected the materials suitable for the ISAC system, based on their properties, a prototype ISAC system was fabricated in the laboratory and was then checked against slippage under an overlay with a vehicle making a sharp turn or applying sudden brakes. The computer program "CIRCLY" was used for this purpose. Testing equipment was developed to evaluate the interfacial shear strength and laboratory testing was performed to determine the shear strength of the fabricated ISAC layer under an AC overlay. Required stiffens was achieved in the ISAC core material by adding hydrated lime in the rubber asphalt. After completion of the component property testing program, the ISAC layer was fabricated and prepared for laboratory evaluation. A testing device was developed in the laboratory that simulated field conditions to evaluate an AC overlay over a cracked PCC slab with and without an ISAC system. The performance of the ISAC system was evaluated by comparing crack growth in the overlay of a control pavement section with that in an overlay over the ISAC treated PCC slab.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prevention or control of reflection cracks in asphaltic concrete overlays has been a problem from the inception of this type of construction. The many different treatments that have been tried in an effort to solve this problem are: (1) reinforcement within and below the overlay, (2) bond breakers, (3) stress-relieving layers, (4) asphalt-mix additives, and (5) placement of fabrics between the existing pavement and the overlay. At the present time, no treatment has been tried that will completely prevent the formation of reflection cracks. Some treatments do delay the formation of cracks, while others do not appear to help at all. Indications are that fabrics do have some beneficial effects, such as a moisture barrier, even though the overlays develop reflection cracks. The fabrics that have been tried for the control of reflection cracks included: (1) Petromat, (2) Bidim, (3) Typar, (4) Cerex, (5) Mirafi, (6) Structofors, (7) Bituthene, (8) Protecto-Wrap, and (9) Fiberglass. Asphalt-rubber interlayers, as formulated by the Arizona Refining Company and the Sahuaro Petroleum Company, show promise in retarding reflection cracks. (Author).

This book was released on 1985 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of reflective cracking in asphaltic concrete overlays is a major factor contributing to the premature failure in the pavement system. This reflective cracking is caused by cyclic stresses induced in the overlay by movements in the underlying pavement. Recent work done with heavy duty membranes has shown that they may be useful in retarding this reflective crack formation. Seven different types of heavy duty membranes were placed over portland cement concrete pavement joints at a site in Pennsylvania before the roadway was overlayed with asphaltic concrete. Control sections, without any membranes, were also built into the project for comparison purposes. This work will evaluate the ability of these membranes to reduce the occurrence of reflective cracking over transverse and longitudinal joints and to function as a water stop once cracking has occurred.
